Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul has announced that the interim government, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, is actively working towards implementing reforms, with nearly half of the suggested recommendations already in place. During a meeting of the National Consensus Commission (NCC) at the Foreign Service Academy, Dr. Nazrul emphasized that about 70 percent of proposals from six reform commissions could be executed by December this year.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, representatives from various political parties participated in the meeting to deliberate on implementing the ‘July National Charter, 2025’. Dr. Nazrul stated, “We have selected the immediately implementable proposals from the six reform commissions, and almost half of them have already been implemented.”

Dr. Nazrul clarified that constitutional changes cannot be made via ordinance or executive order, but some issues, such as the leadership of parliamentary standing committees, can be resolved by amending the Rules of Procedure. He noted that some proposals involve routine or repetitive functions, such as drafting an anti-corruption strategy paper. He remarked, “Many reforms are routine functions, some can be done by executive order, some by ordinance, while a few touch constitutional issues and need wider consensus.”

Regarding elections, Dr. Nazrul assured that the government is committed to conducting elections in early February. He stressed that all necessary legal reforms must be completed by November 30 to avoid influencing the process post-announcement of the election schedule.

Expressing optimism, Dr. Nazrul stated, “I feel very optimistic hearing you all. Everyone wants a good solution, built on consensus. If our intention remains to preserve the unity of the mass uprising, to prevent the return of fascism, and to protect the country from danger, then finding solutions will not be difficult.” He highlighted the importance of maintaining unity, saying, “The most important thing is intention. If we are united in our intention, the path ahead will be clear.”

The meeting also featured speeches from National Consensus Commission Vice-president Professor Ali Riaz, BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad, and National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain. Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haider, involved in the National Consensus formation process, moderated the meeting.
