7 get 10 years jail for abduction in Khulna

A Khulna court on Thursday sentenced seven people to ten years imprisonment for abducting two people in 2010.

Khulna Special Sessions and Divisional Judge Wahiduzzaman Shikdar handed down the punishment.

The convicts are—Rabiul Islam, Sajuddin alias Shahbuddin, Zahid alias Zahid, Azizul Morol alias Thakur, Raju Molla alias Raju, Yeaz alias Izaz Molla and Nurjamal alias Kalu.

Raju and Izaz were present on the dock while the others were tried in absentia. All were fined Tk 1000, in default, to suffer one month more rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, a group of criminals, numbering 20 barged into the fish enclosure of Chinmoy at Hadda village in Koyra upazila on August 12, 2010.

They beat up Chinmoy and his guard Mantu and abducted them. They also demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom for their release.

Later, they were rescued from the Sundarbans after providing Tk 55,000.

Soumen Mandal, owner of an adjacent fish enclosure, lodged complaint against eight people on August 16 with Koyra Police.

On March 9, 2011, police submitted chargesheet against seven people.
