50th death anniversary of ex-MP Nurul Haque tomorrow

The 50th death anniversary of AFM Nurul Haque Hawlader, a prominent politician, one of the organizers of the Liberation War and a former member of parliament (MP), will be observed tomorrow.

On this occasion, the Nurul Haque Foundation will organize different programmes, including offering ziarat at the graveyard, Quran Khwani, milad-mahfil and special prayers, tomorrow at Nurul Haque's village home.

Nurul Haque, father of Naria Upazila Awami League adviser and presidium member of Amra Muktijuddhar Shantan Zubaida Haque Ajanta, was shot dead by assassins at his residence at Shaldha under Naria upazila in Shariatpur district at 8pm on May 30 in 1973 while he was in a meeting with local political leaders and activists.

Md Sazzad Hossain, senior reporter and deputy chief reporter of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), and former joint secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), is his son-in-law.

Nurul Haque was elected Member of Parliament from Naria in the country's first Jatiya Sangsad election in 1973.

He played an important role as a local organizer of the Liberation War in 1971 and fought against the Pakistani occupation forces to liberate the country.

Nurul Haque served in various important positions of the local Awami League with great efficiency.

In his personal life, he was a very affectionate and close companion of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Nurul Haque was an active leader on the streets of Dhaka during the mass uprising of 1969.
