A Bogura tribunal on Sunday sentenced four people to death for killing a seven-year-old girl after rape in 2020.

Bogura Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Nur Mohammad Shahrier Kabir handed down the judgment.

The condemned convicts are—Bappi Ahmmed, 24, son of Mozammel, Kamal Pasha, 23, son of Daliluddin, Shamim Reza, 24, son of Sanwar Hossain and Lavlu Sheikh, 23, son of Shaheb Ali of Dhunat upazila.

According to the prosecution, victim’s parents Belal Hossain and Mariam Daisy of Nashratpur village used to work at a garment factory in Dhaka and their seven-year-old daughter Mahi Umme Tabassum used to live at her grandfather’s house at the village.

Mahi was a Class 2 student of a local government primary school.

On December 14, 2020, Mahi along with her grandfather and paternal aunt went to an Islamic programme (mahfil) near a graveyard of the village.

At one stage, Mahi alone went to a shop to buy sweets.

Getting Mahi alone on the road, Bappi allured Mahi with a promise to give her peanuts, and took her to local Kajem Jobeda Technical College where he along with his three friends Kamal, Shamim and Lablu violated the girl in turns.

At one stage, Bappi strangled Mahi to death and severed a finger of the girl to make people believe that she was killed by a wild animal.

Police recovered the body of Mahi from a bamboo cluster and sent it to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Mahi’s father filed a case with Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on December 15 that year.

On December 25, police arrested Shamim and following his confessional statement, police arrested the three more accused of the case. All of them admitted their guilt before the court.

On October 25, 2021, police submitted chargesheet against them.
