Dhaka: Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee today stated that “36 July” represents the result of a collective movement and an extended battle against authoritarian governance. Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled “The Sacrifice of the Martyrs, Our Responsibility, and a New Bangladesh” at the Central Kochi-Kachar Mela auditorium in Segunbagicha, Anee highlighted the efforts behind the July movement.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Anee emphasized that the foundation of the July movement was constructed through 16 years of resistance against what he identified as an authoritarian regime. He noted the united participation of students, teachers, poets, writers, professionals, and people from various sectors, which culminated in the events of August 5, leading to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing the country.
“The students who sacrificed their lives to establish the rights of the people have left us deeply indebted,” Anee remarked. He added that it is now essential to repay that debt by ensuring the political and economic empowerment of the people and by building a democratic Bangladesh based on equality, human dignity, and social justice.
The event also featured Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment State Minister Md Nurul Hoque as the key speaker and Liberation War Affairs State Minister Ishraque Hossain as a special discussant. Anee stressed the importance of acknowledging differing opinions in a Bangladesh free from fascism, advocating for progress through dialogue rather than division.
He asserted, “The beauty of democracy lies in constructive criticism,” and emphasized that there should be “no compromise on the July issue.” Anee also reminded attendees of the prime minister’s commitment to implementing the July Charter.
The discussion was chaired by Alhaj Ahmed Jibon, convener of the Jagrata July Forum. Among the other distinguished guests were Hasan Al Mamun, General Secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad, and renowned photographer and human rights activist Dr. Shahidul Alam.
