Hatia: Bangladesh Coast Guard in a drive arrested 33 fishermen along with 30 lakh meters illegal current nets from the Meghna River in Hatia upazila of the district. Coast Guard Media Officer Lt. Commander Siam-ul-Haq confirmed the information on Tuesday morning.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has been conducting regular operations to prevent illegal fishing in the inland and maritime waters of Bangladesh and to ensure the proper reproduction of fish. Acting on information, a team from Coast Guard Station Hatia conducted a special operation in the Chairman Ghat area of the Meghna River on Monday evening. During this operation, two fishing boats were seized along with 30 lakh meters of illegal current nets valued at Taka about 10 crore, leading to the arrest of 33 fishermen.
The illegal seized current nets were subsequently burnt in the presence of the Upazila Fisheries Officer, marking a significant step in curbing illegal fishing activities in the region.
