Around 300 people, ranging from a child barely a few months old to a 96-year-old, took shelter at the WildTeam Conservation Biology Centre (WCBC) in Bagerhat’s Mongla to see out the danger from cyclonic storm Sitrang, that hit Bangladesh this week.

They started leaving after the worst phase of the cyclone had passed early Tuesday, WildTeam said in a statement.

Although Sitrang spared India’s West Bengal, Bangladesh was not so lucky. At least 29 people died as the cyclone made landfall in the southern part of the country Monday.

The WCBC facility had previously acted as a cyclone shelter during cyclone Bulbul in early November 2019, when around 250 people took shelter there.

As part of its Integrated Tiger Habitat Conservation Programme (ITHCP) project, WildTeam built WCBC in Joymoni village as a centre to increase the capacity of organisations and individuals, and as a hub for wildlife researchers.

WildTeam aims to carry out activities to improve the conservation status of key species and habitats in Bangladesh, and develop partnerships, tools, and platforms to build the capacity of organisations and individuals to carry out effective conservation.
