Narayanganj: A Narayanganj court on Monday sentenced three muggers to death for killing Wazed Alam Shimanto, a student of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), here in 2024. Narayanganj District and Sessions' Judge Abu Shamim Azad pronounced the verdict.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the condemned convicts are Anik, Akash Khan, and Chandi Babu. The prosecution detailed that the three muggers intercepted Shimanto, a 2nd-year student of the AIUB Department of Computer Science, in front of Morgan Girls' High School at Deubhog in Narayanganj city around 6:00 am on December 12, 2024.
During the incident, the assailants stabbed Shimanto indiscriminately before fleeing the scene with his bag and mobile phone. Shimanto was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
Following the tragic event, Shimanto's father, Hazi Alam, lodged a case at Sadar Police Station. Police successfully apprehended the trio from various locations across the district. Each of the accused provided confessional statements before the court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
