Dhaka: Three leaders of the Dhaka University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (DU) have been relieved of their organisational duties over allegations of assaulting a physically challenged student at Jagannath Hall.
According to United News of Bangladesh, a press release issued on Monday stated that disciplinary actions were taken against the leaders for violating organisational discipline. The accused individuals are Chandan Das, Jhalak Das, and Ripon Chandra Sarkar, who all served as joint conveners of the Jagannath Hall unit JCD.
The allegations detail an incident that occurred on Sunday evening at a tea stall beneath Rabindra Bhaban of the dormitory. The dispute reportedly began when Avoy Kumar Singh was found sitting with his legs raised on a bench due to his knee problem, a necessary position because of his physical condition.
After returning to his room, Avoy was allegedly followed by the accused, who then physically assaulted him. Avoy, a student from the Department of Bangla in the 2020-21 academi
c session, later recounted the incident in a Facebook post, demanding justice for the assault.
Jagannath Hall Provost Debashish Pal confirmed that he was informed of the incident the same night. A six-member investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident. Headed by House Tutor Prof Dr Shimul Halder, the committee has been instructed to submit its report within the next 2-3 days.
