3 Bodies Recovered from Shitalakshya River, One Still Missing

Shibpur: The bodies of three individuals who went missing while bathing in the Shitalakshya River in Shibpur upazila were recovered on Saturday, with one person still unaccounted for.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the tragic incident involved Md Obaidullah, 38, of Bhangal village in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur; his sister-in-law Shanta, 16; and Sourav, 20, son of Majnu Miah of Char-Lakhpur village in Shibpur. The missing individual is identified as Md Shanto, 24, son of Jewel Miah from Tangail.

The incident unfolded on Friday afternoon near Lakhpur village under Dulalpur Union when Shanta was swept away by a strong current while bathing. Obaidullah and Shanto attempted a rescue but were also carried away by the river. Several locals joined the search, and Sourav, a neighbor, also entered the water but did not return.

Emergency services were alerted, and the Fire Service conducted a search operation until late Friday night without success. The search resumed on Saturday morning with a diving team from Bhairab, who faced strong currents during the operation. Sourav's body was recovered around 8am, followed by Obaidullah's body an hour later. Shanta's body was discovered in the Shaoraid area of Palash upazila, around 12 kilometers from the initial incident site.

Islam Khan from the Shibpur Fire Service confirmed the recovery of three bodies and stated that efforts to find Shanto are ongoing. Mohammad Kohinur Mia, officer-in-charge of Shibpur Model Police Station, also affirmed that the search for Shanto is still underway.
