Tongi: The second phase of this year’s Bishwa Ijtema, the second-largest congregation of Muslims, concluded today with the akheri munajat (final prayer) on the banks of the Turag River in Tongi, located on the outskirts of the capital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, followers of Maulana Saad participated in this phase. Thousands of Muslims from Dhaka, Gazipur, Savar, and surrounding areas joined the Ijtema. The Ijtema ground was crowded before the start of the final prayer. Thousands of devotees gathered at the Ijtema venue and nearby areas this morning to partake in the final prayer.
Mohammad Sayem, media coordinator for Saad followers, expressed gratitude for the peaceful completion of the event. He noted that several thousand foreign devotees attended the final phase, which began with ‘Aam Bayan’ (general sermons) by noted Islamic scholars after Fazr prayers on February 14.
The government implemented security measures for this phase of Bishwa Ijtema. The security management included monitoring through closed-circuit cameras, watchtowers, and rooftops, with an adequate number of police personnel deployed. Intelligence agencies in plain clothes were on duty in every Khitta, along with specialized teams, as reported by law enforcement sources.
Mohammad Sayem mentioned that the district administration handed over the Tongi Ijtema ground to the followers of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi on February 9 for the event. Deputy Police Commissioner of Gazipur NM Nasir Uddin told BSS that law enforcement agencies performed their duties sincerely and responsibly during the Ijtema. Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Wahid Hossain stated that the Ijtema ground will be returned to the district administrator on February 18.
