Dhaka:The Road Transport and Highways Division (RTHD) will honour 276 skilled and professional drivers across the country on the occasion of National Road Safety Day 2026.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the honour will be bestowed on October 28, with 20 drivers recognized at the central level in the capital, while four from each district will be acknowledged at the district level, as per the official documents of the RTHD.
The initiative aims to encourage skilled drivers, motivate them toward responsible driving, and raise public awareness to prevent road accidents and ensure road safety. Preparations for observing the National Road Safety Day and implementing related programs were reviewed in a meeting held on October 12, chaired by RTHD Secretary Dr. Mohammed Ziaul Haque.
The meeting decided to conduct health check-ups, awareness activities at educational institutions, repair road signs, signals, and road markings, and launch a nationwide campaign alongside honoring the drivers. Dr. Haque emphasized the important role of skilled and responsible drivers in building safe roads and the need for them to abide by traffic laws to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians.
Officials indicated plans to create healthy competition in the transport sector by recognizing the skills, professionalism, and contribution to road safety of the honored drivers, although detailed criteria for selection are yet to be confirmed. Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Mohammad Habibur Rahman highlighted the importance of driver skills, adherence to traffic laws, and safe driving habits in reducing road accidents.
