Dhaka: The 25th general meeting of the Bangladesh National Authority for the Chemical Weapons Convention (BNACWC) was convened at the Multipurpose Hall of the Armed Forces Division (AFD) today. The meeting was presided over by Lieutenant General S M Kamrul Hasan, the BNACWC Chairman and Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division. A total of 43 military and civilian members from various ministries, departments, organizations, and forces participated in the gathering.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting underscored the necessity for online registration of all activities concerning scheduled chemicals and non-scheduled independent organic chemical production institutions with BNACWC. This move aims to ensure the effective implementation of the International Chemical Weapons Convention and the Chemical Weapons (Prohibition) Act, 2006, in Bangladesh.
The assembly addressed the gravity of recent fire incidents at Mirpur, Gazipur, and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, attributing them to chemical mismanagement within the country. Instructions were provided to relevant parties to play a proactive role in preventing such occurrences.
Lieutenant General S M Kamrul Hasan, during his address, highlighted the crucial role of importers, users, customs, and law enforcement agencies. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the nation’s overall chemical safety system and implementing effective measures to manage chemical accidents, as reported by the ISPR.
