Benapole: A total of 2,100 metric tonnes of non-basmati coarse rice have been imported through Benapole port over the course of six working days. The rice shipments, totaling 15 separate consignments, were delivered to the port's 31 No. transshipment yard, according to Benapole Port Director Shamim Hossain.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the rice imports took place between January 27 and February 17. This follows a previous import of 6,128 metric tonnes of rice through the port from August to November of last year.
The government had previously permitted 232 importing firms to bring in 200,000 metric tonnes of rice, setting a deadline of March 3 for the completion of imports and their distribution in the Bangladeshi market. The importing firm responsible for this shipment, Haji Musa Karim and Sons, sourced the rice from India, with M/s Bhuiya Enterprise acting as the clearing and forwarding agent.
Abdus Samad, the proprietor of Haji Musa Karim and Sons, mentioned that the 2,100 metric tonnes of coarse rice were transported from India using 58 trucks over the six-day period. The cost of importing the rice to Benapole port was Tk 50 per kilogram, with plans to sell it in the open market at Tk 51 per kilogram.
Port Director Shamim Hossain emphasized that officials have been tasked with ensuring the swift release of the imported rice consignments from the port to facilitate timely distribution.
