Kathmandu defeats Lalitpur by 31 runs

Kathmandu: Kathmandu defeated Lalitpur by 31 runs in today's match held under the NCCS Women and Men Twenty-20 Cricket Tournament. In the match held at Mulpani Cricket Ground, batting first after winning the toss, Kathmandu posted a total of 130 runs at the loss of 3 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs. Asmita Kharel contributed the most 37 runs for Kathmandu followed by Kanchan Shrestha (36) and Eli Yadav (18). For the bowling side, Manisha Upadhyay and Sambhavya Dhakal took one wicket each. In reply, chasing a victory target 131 runs, Lalitpur was reduced to 99 runs at the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs. Yashu Pandey contributed the most for Lalitpur with 35 runs while Rekha Tamang and Savika Yadav scored 16 runs each. For Kathmandu, Sanskriti Phuyal, Bipisha Shahi and Eli Yadav took one wicket each. Bangladesh becomes a role model in establishing global peace: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said Bangladesh has become a role model in establishing global peace, reiterating her call to stop ongoing wars solving all problems through dialogue and channelised the money used in arms races for welfare of mankind. "Bangladesh is a dependable and responsible name in the efforts of protecting peace and safety alongside establishing global peace. We are acknowledged by all and have become a role model on the global stage," she said. The premier made the remarks while addressing an event marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers-2024 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) here. She said as many as 6092 Bangladeshi peacekeepers including 493 women have been working with reputation in 13 places of the UN peacekeeping missions. "They (Bangladeshi peacekeepers) have been working with fame and glory," she added. The prime minister said the heads of the state and government where the Bangladeshi peacekeepers are now working have highly praised them . "I feel really proud hearing the appreciation," she continued. Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is working to pursue the global peace following the ideal of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. "We are actively participating in other international forums alongside the UN peacekeeping missions to establish global peace," she said. She also said the "Culture of Peace" proposal placed by Bangladesh in 1997 was unanimously adopted as resolution in the UN in 1999 and the UN had announced 2000 as the "International Year of the Culture of Peace". The prime minister said Bangabandhu had appeared as envoy of peace and voice of the distressed people of the world through his work. For that reason, Bangabandhu was awarded the "Joliot Curie Peace Medal" on May 23 in 1973, she said. Sheikh Hasina greeted the Bangladeshi peacekeepers as they are tirelessly working to protect civilians, human rights and establish peace globally. She said that the Bangladeshi peacekeepers have successfully taught Ban gla culture and language to many people of the countries they are working for. "So, the people of those countries (where the peacekeepers are working) have given you untold love and affections," she added. "Overall, our professionalism, efficiency and commitment in establishing global peace have set an example for others," she continued. The prime minister called upon the Bangladeshi peacekeepers to continue the efforts and thus brighten the country's image further. She recalled the contribution of 168 Bangladeshi peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives and 266 others who are severely injured for establishing global peace. Chief of Army Staff General S M Shafiuddin Ahmed, Senior Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis also spoke at the programme. At the outset of the event, one minute silence was observed to pay tributes to the memory of the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the noble cause of the world peace. A video documentary on achievement of th e Bangladeshi peacekeepers in the UN missions was screened at the function. The prime minister handed over awards to the three injured peacekeepers. Stop arms race: Sheikh Hasina called upon the global communities to help stop the arms race and use the war money to establish world peace alongside protecting the people from hunger and poverty and the adverse impact of the climate change. "The money of arms race can help save the countries vulnerable for climate change impacts and for food, education and health for underprivileged children," she said. The premier said Bangladesh always favours peace instead of war and support solution of all problems through dialogues. "We don't want war, we want peace. We want to solve everything through dialogue," she added. She said a huge amount of money had been spending for arms production and arms race by the rich countries. "We talk about peace. But why to be engaged in conflicts?," she said. The prime minister opined that the money for arms can be spent for he lping mankind to live a decent life. "Conflicts and wars in different parts of the globe are disrupting the world peace today," she said. Sheikh Hasina said that Russia-Ukraine war, Israel's genocide in Gaza, the forcibly displaced Rohingya people of Myanmar and such other things have made a dire situation for the mankind. Wrestling in Kalapathar to set world record

On the occasion of May 29, i.e. 'Everest Day' today, a wrestling competition was held at Kalapathar, in a bid to set a world record for wrestling at the highest place of the world. An international friendly match of wrestling was held today at Kalapathar at an altitude of 5,644 meters. The event was organized by Nepal Women's Wrestling Foundation. Nepal won the friendly competition held between Nepal's first female wrestler BhagwatiKhadka (Yunika) and American wrestler Daniel Morrison (Danny Mo). Khadka, who has been dreaming of setting a world record through wrestling, claimed that this will be a world record as no wrestling match has been played at such an altitude in the world. Harun Ar Rashid made new RAB DG

Additional Inspector General of Police Md Harun Ar Rashid has been appointed as the new director general (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the elite force of Bangladesh Police. A gazette notification, signed by Deputy Secretary Md Mahabub Rahman Sheikh of the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, was issued to this end today. Former PM Khanal observes RSS photo exhibition

Kathmandu: Former Prime Minister and CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Jhala Nath Khanal asserted that there were important achievements in the infrastructure sector following the establishment of republic system in the country. Observing the photo exhibition organized by the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) on the occasion of the Republic Day-2081 BS, leader Khanal said the exhibition had given a good answer to the naysayers that not much were achieved after the establishment of republic system. The exhibition themed "Achievements of Republic: Infrastructure for Prosperity" features 95 photos highlighting various infrastructure development projects from the central to local levels which were used by the RSS photo service. "It is a positive aspect to put on display the photos that illustrate various activities in the field development, construction and transformation especially in the wake of establishment of republic system," the former PM said, adding, "The expo has clearly explained what kind of development activities have taken place in Nepal in the last 16 years since the establishment of republic system." The exhibition displaying photos related to energy, airport, tourism, roads, bridges, reconstructed heritages, postal highway, Mulpani Cricket Ground, Kathmandu-Madhesh Fast Track, Sunkoshi-Marin diversion multi-purpose project, solar panel, 4G towers of telephone, national pride projects and projects of provinces kicked off since May 23. Executive Chairperson of RSS, Dharmendra Jha, Deputy General Managers Raju Shakya and Somnath Lamichhane and Chief Editor Uttam Silwal among others briefed former PM Khanal about the photos put on display. On the occasion, leader Khanal inspected RSS's news reporting and editing departments and took stock about various processes of news collection, processing and dissemination by the only state-owned news agency of the country. Earthquake jolts Dhaka, other parts of country

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake jolted different parts of the country including the capital at 7.13pm this evening. "The quake was felt in Dhaka, Sylhet, Chattogram and other parts of the country," Golam Mostofa, an official of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department told BSS. Economic reforms will get pace with implementation of budget: PM Dahal

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has said economic reforms would get pace along with implementation of the budget for coming fiscal year 2024/25. After inaugurating a modern building of Chautara Hospital today, Prime Minister mentioned that the budget for coming fiscal year was unveiled promoting production, productivity and employment. "We have gained much achievements after establishment of republic. Quality change has been achieved from infrastructure sector to public sector including health and education", he explained. The Prime Minister shared, "The budget for the coming fiscal year has announced that Nepal has now entered the new phase of economic reforms", stating that the federal government through policies, programme and budget has forwarded programmes of strategic importance in order to improve living standard of the people and making people of feel about the change. He added that quality change in service delivery of hospitals has been seen in recent period. The existence of hea lthy citizens suggests that the country's economy and society are healthy, the Prime Minister said, adding that a populace that is physically and mentally fit can make substantial contributions to national development. With this principle in mind, the government has accorded top priority to the enhancement of the health sector, he stated. "Noticeable strides in the health indicators in a short period is the achievement of the republic system." As he said, with the completion of a new building for the hospital, it will be able to function efficiently and effectively. Recalling the time he spent in the district during the 'people's war', the Prime Minister said he used to visit Sindhupalchowk frequently during the war. I am familiar with the villages, settlements, cliffs, and the overall geography of the district." RU brings its exam management under automation

Rajshahi University (RU) has brought its examination management activities under automation for betterment of all concerned, particularly the students and their guardians. Necessary process of the automation has been completed successfully and the need-based infrastructure development and other relevant works were earlier completed. Vice-chancellor (VC) of the university Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar today opened the automation activities at the office of Controller of Examinations formally. Pro-VCs Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam and Prof Humayun Kabir, Treasurer Prof Obayedur Rahman Pramanik, Registrar Prof Tariqul Hassan, Controller of Examinations Ashraful Islam Khan, Proctor Prof Asabul Haque and ICT Centre Director Prof Khademul Islam were present on the occasion. During their respective power-point presentations, ICT Director Prof Khademul Islam and Controller of Examinations Prof Ashraful Islam Khan discussed the aspects of automated examination management highlighting its technical and applications elaborately. VC Prof Golam Sabbir said that they have started promoting automated management in the examinations of the academic year of 2022-2023. Various manual activities, including students' attendance to class, registration for taking part in examinations, result publication within four weeks of exams and issuing of transcripts and certificates, were brought under the automation system. Budget for coming FY transmits hope among people: Former PM Khanal

Kathmandu: Leader of the CPN (Unified Socialist) Jhala Nath Khanal said that the budget unveiled by the government for coming fiscal year is such type of budget that transmits hope among the people. Talking on contemporary issues at the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS)'s central office today, leader Khanal, also former Prime Minister, commented the budget for coming fiscal year has prioritized issues such as land reform, agricultural reforms, urbanization, industrialization, education and health among others. It may be noted that the incumbent government announced a budget of Rs 1.86 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year 2024/025 BS on Tuesday. He explained, "The policies, programme and budget have introduced programmes such as poverty alleviation, employment generation and preventing exodus of youths." According to him, there was some 'newness' in the budget unveiled yesterday. "The budget has spread positivity and hope among the people," he remarked. Fugitive convict arrested in city

Members of Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police arrested a fugitive convict in connection with a cheque fraud case from city's Shahbagh Police Station area yesterday. The arrested was identified as Razia Selim , 45, wife of Selim Biswas a resident of Naragati in Narail District, ATU Media and Awareness Wing police super Barrister Mahfuzul Alam Russel told BSS today. Acting on a tip off, a team of ATU conducted a drive in Shahbagh area and arrested her on Tuesday afternoon, he said. He said a case was filed against Razia for cheque fraud in 2016 and the court sent her to four- month imprisonment without labour and fined her Taka 13 lakh. UML’s National Women Gathering commences

Kathmandu: A two-day National Women Gathering of the CPN (UML) kicked off today. The event was inaugurated by former President Bidya Devi Bhandari. According to Bhanubhakta Dhakal, the party's Standing Committee member and the coordinator of the CPN (UML) People's Organization Coordination Mechanism, around 5,000 representatives including women leaders from the party's 23 affiliated organizations, people's representatives on behalf of the party, and women office bearers from the party province and district committees, FSU women members from the ANNIFSU are participating in the gathering. The party decided to host the gathering commemorating the passage of the resolution by the parliament on May 30, 2006. The resolution aimed to endorse a mother's right to pass on citizens to her offspring, ensure women's one-third participation at all levels of the State, and abolish discriminatory laws and violence against women. Top terror held with 10 one-shooter guns in Rajshahi

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in an anti-crime drive, arrested an alleged top-listed firearms trader with ten one-shooter guns in the district here last night. The arrested was identified as Abdur Rashid, 36, son of Aynul Rashid of Paksey area under Iswardi Police Station in Pabna district, RAB sources said this noon. On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive at Alaipur area under Bagha upazila in the district around 4.30 am and arrested him. The operation team recovered ten one-shooter guns from his possession, according to the RAB sources. The RAB team nabbed the person for his long involvement in firearms and drugs trading and trafficking. A case was recorded with Bagha Police Station in this connection and the arrested person, along with the seized firearms were handed over to police, the sources added.
