Phunjo Lama atop Sagarmatha claiming record of fastest climber

Kathmandu: Nepali woman climber Phunjo Jhangmu Lama of Gorkha district has kept the record for fastest ascent to the Sagarmatha, reaching the world's highest peak, in less than 15 hours. Phunjo was atop the world's tallest peak at 6:23 am on Thursday, making the record of the fastest ascent by a woman. Chief of Tourism Department's Temporary Field Office, Khimlal Gautam, confirmed that Phunjo reached the top of the tallest peak at 6:23 am starting her expedition at 3:52 pm on Wednesday from the Everest Base Camp. Weeklong deworming campaign begins in Natore

A weeklong deworming campaign began today in the district today. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abu Naser Bhuiyan inaugurated the programme at Dattapara Government Primary School this morning as the chief guest with civil surgeon of the district Dr. Muhammad Moshiur Rahman in the chair. District Education Officer Md Sahaduzzaman, District Primary Education Officer Golam Nabi, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Akhtar Jahan Sathi and Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, among others, spoke. Speakers said that by consuming deworming tablets, the physical and mental health of children will develop and they will be protected from malnutrition. The attention of students will increase in their studies. As a result talented nation will be developed. Under the weeklong campaign, 4.10 lakh children of primary and secondary levels of the district will be administered deworming tablets. Students aged 5-16 will be brought under the campaign, each of the children will get one deworming tablet fre e of cost, civil surgeon office source said. The programme will continue till May 29. 360-kg chemical-mixed shrimp destroyed, fined Tk 18,000 in Khulna

A mobile court seized 360-kg chemical-mixed shrimp from Bakchor intersection under Kotwali Police Station in Jashore district last night. The mobile court also fined Taka 18,000 to a fish factory owner on charge of trading chemical-mixed shrimp locally known as jellyfish. Being informed, the mobile court set up a temporary check post at Bakchar intersection on Khulna-Jashore highway to check fish carrying different trucks, said a press release. Killers cut Azim into pieces to hide his body: DB chief

Killers cut Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar's body into many pieces and later separated bone from flesh with a view to hiding his body, said chief of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid. He said this in a press briefing at DB Office in the capital. Harun said the plan of the murder was designed two-three months ago in Dhaka. As they didn't succeed to kill Azim in Dhaka, the killers designed the plan to murder him in Kolkata. "At first the killers cut Anwarul Azim Anar's body into many pieces and later separated bone from flesh. After giving turmeric power into the separated parts of the body, the killers then took them out of the flat in travel bags to different places," he said. The DB chief said Akhtaruzzaman, one of the masterminds, of the murder has two residences in the capital Dhaka--one in Gulshan and other one in Basundhara area. The killers made the plan for long at Akhtaruzzaman's both residences, he said. Replying to a question, Harun said the ni ckname of kingpin of the murder is Shaheen and his girlfriend's name if Shelesthi. The name of the person who directly murdered Azim in Kolkata is Amanullah but it is not his real name, he said adding his real name is Shimul but he made a passport with the name Amanullah. The DB chief said they are investigating into the incident as the three arrestees confessed their involvement with the murder during interrogation. Bangladesh, India working together to unravel Azim’s killing: Hasan

Foreign minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said Bangladesh and India are working together on resolving the mystery of murder of Anwarul Azim Anar, MP. "Our mission is in regular contact with Kolkata Police on the whole matter. As it is under investigation, it is not appropriate to say more about it," he told reporters after attending a programme at the Jatiya press club in the capital. Anwarul Azim Anar, a Member of Parliament (MP) from Jhenidah-4 constituency, went missing in Kolkata (West Bengal) last week and later was murdered in a residential flat there. Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the law enforcement agencies had 'almost identified' the killers of Anwarul Azim. Court orders to freeze 33 bank accounts of ex-IGP Benazir

A court here today ordered to freeze 33 bank accounts and attach properties under total 83 deeds of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his wife Zeeshan Mirza. Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain passed the order, accepting a plea of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Confirming the report to BSS, counsel of the anti-graft body senior advocate Khorshed Alam Khan said the ACC had pleaded to freeze former IGP's 33 bank account and he and his wife's different properties across the country under 83 deeds. Accepting the ACC plea, the court today passed the order. Earlier public prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir filed the petition for ACC, pleading to freeze those 33 accounts and attach properties under 83 deeds, accusing the former IGP of amassing illegal wealth of Taka hundreds of crores under his and his family members' names both at home and abroad. The ACC in its plea said the accused are trying to sell or hand over the properties and launder the mone y abroad and if they succeed in doing so, the state would incur a huge loss. 31 dengue patients hospitalized

As many as 31 dengue patients were hospitalised in the last 24 hours till this morning, according to the daily statement of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). During the period, five dengue patients were hospitalised in Dhaka city while 26 were admitted to different hospitals outside the capital, the statement added. This year, the total number of cases rose to 2,714 while 33 deaths from dengue disease were reported during the same period. In the past 24 hours, 27 dengue patients were discharged from different hospitals. Among the total cases, 2,550 patients have already been released, the DGHS statement added. Azim’s killers almost identified: home minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today said that the law enforcement agencies had 'almost identified' the killers of Anwarul Azim Anar, MP. 'All we have done…Only announcement is due,' he told journalists while replying to a question regarding arrest of lawmaker Anar's killers. The minister said that he will make an announcement on Anar's killers following discussion with intelligence agencies of both the countries. Anwarul Azim Anar, a Member of Parliament from Jhenidah-4 constituency, went missing in Kolkata (West Bengal) last week and later was murdered in a residential flat there. Giving details, the home minister said the body of Anar was recovered yet. 'We have not recovered the body yet. What you have heard, we have also heard that. I can't officially tell you anything until the body is recovered,' he added. The minister told newsmen that Intelligence agencies of the two countries are working on it and it is not right time to say more as the matter is under investigation. After confirmation, we will provide you details, he told the newsmen. He said a case was filed in connection with Anar murder by her daughter and then Bangladesh police and intelligence agencies were working on it. He said Police and intelligence agencies of both Bangladesh and India have been working on the murder. Probe report over lawmaker Anwarul murder case on July 4

A court here today set July 4 for submitting probe report in a case lodged over the murder of Awami League lawmaker of Jenaidah-4 Anwarul Azim Anar. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque passed the order, accepting first information report (FIR) in the case. Victim's daughter Mumtarin Ferdous Dorin filed the case on May 22 with capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Anwarul, a three-time MP and also president of Kaliganj upazila unit Awami League, went to India on May 12 to receive treatment. He went missing on May 13 after going out of the flat he was residing in Kolkata's Borah Nagar area. According to the Kolkata police sources, Anwarul was taken to a flat in New Town in Kolkata, where he believed to be strangled to death and his body was cut into pieces and dumped in different areas by the killers.
