Livestock Services Week and Exhibition begins in Sadullapur

The Livestock Services Week and Exhibition-2024 started at Sadullapur upazila town in the district as elsewhere in the country on Thursday with the theme "prani sompode bhorbo desh, Gorbo Smart Bangladesh". Marking the week, upazila livestock office and veterinary hospital has arranged the elaborate programmes in cooperation with Livestock and Dairy Development Project under the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry. In the morning, a discussion and prize distribution function was also held on hospital premises with UNO Kawsar Habib in the chair. Upazila livestock officer Dr. Sirajul Islam, upazila agriculture officer Matiul Alam, assistant commissioner (Land) Md. Asaduzzaman addressed the function as focal persons. The function was also addressed, among others, by president of upazila Awami League Abdul Jalil Sarker, journalist Tajul Islam Reza and young entrepreneur Golam Kibria while veterinary surgeon Dr. Abdullahel Kafi moderated the ceremony. The speakers in their speeches underscored the need for flou rishing the livestock sector further to meet the local demand of the protein. In this context, they emphasized for creating more entrepreneurs in the upazila to turn livestock farming into social movement to make the farming popular to the youths, they also said. Upazila livestock officer Dr. Sirajul Islam said some 29 stalls had been set up in the exhibition to display the varieties of livestock of the upazila. National flag’s 1st designer Shib Narayan Das passes away

Valiant freedom fighter Shib Narayan Das, who had designed the first flag of Bangladesh just before the independence, passed away this morning while undergoing treatment at a city hospital. He was 78. "Das breathed his last at 9.25am at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the city," said a release here today. On April 1, Shib Narayan Das was admitted at the Samorita Hospital with respiratory ailment and later shifted to the BSMMU following advice of the physicians, it added. "My father's body has been kept at the BIRDEM mortuary as his body will be donated here and his cornea will be donated to Sandhani, a voluntary organisation run by medical college students that manages blood and organ donations," said his son Arnob Aditya Das. He is survived by his wife, a son and numerous admirers, relatives, well- wishers and colleagues to mourn his death. Shib Narayan joined politics following the language movement hero Dhirendranath Dutta. He partic ipated in the education movement of 1962 and was imprisoned. The Liberation War of the country was started first with the flag containing the country's map that was designed by Shib Narayan Das who was then student leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League. The Bangladesh flag was first hoisted in front of the Arts Building of Dhaka University (DU) on March 2, 1971 by the student leaders. On June 6, 1970, a group of Chhatra League leaders had designed the flag at the room no-118 of the then Iqbal Hall, now named as Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall, of the Dhaka University for the 'Joy Bangla Bahini'. In a condolence message, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JASAD President Hasanul Haque Inu and its General Secretary Shirin Akhtar expressed profound shock and sorrow at the demise of one of the prominent flag designers and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family. Quader terms BNP as communal force, kingpin of corruption

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today termed BNP as communal force, kingpin of corruption and money laundering and urged all to resist them. 'BNP is the main obstacle to the country's overall progress. They should be resisted,' he told a discussion marking the 52nd founding anniversary of Krishak League at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the capital's Khamarbari. Quader said BNP is now disoriented as its leader is staying in London and workers have become frustrated. BNP workers also don't believe that the party has any future, he said. Those who failed in waging movement and resisting polls are now criticizing the government, he said. The AL general secretary those who perpetrated assassination of Bangabandhu and most of his family members and killing of four national leaders are now talking about democracy. He said BNP itself remains in crisis so that they are saying the country is in crisis. As long as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remains in p ower, the country will never lose its path, he said. Small farmers need direct access to the markets for fair price

Small and marginal farmers need direct access to the markets for ensuring fair prices of their agricultural products. To this end, time-fitting steps should be taken for linking each and every of the farmers to the markets. Utmost emphasis should be given on arranging group marketing through formation of farmers organizations based on the selected areas. Agricultural marketing experts and entrepreneurs came up with the observation while addressing a daylong regional marketing workshop here on Thursday. Regional office of the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) organized the workshop at Victoria Convention Hall supported by the Program on Agricultural and Rural Transformation for Nutrition, Entrepreneurship and Resilience (PARTNER). The discussants discussed and devised ways and means on adopting best agriculture practice, promoting processing and generating exportable markets of agricultural goods. DAM Director General Masud Karim addressed the workshop as chief guest, while Additional Director o f the Department of Agricultural Extension Mahmudul Faruque, DAM Programme Director Dr Abdullah Al Faruque and Deputy Director Shahana Akhter Jahan spoke as special guests. DAM Deputy Programme Director Masud Rana gave an illustration on the programme along with its aims, objectives and implementation strategy. Senior Monitoring Officers Bayazid Bostami and Rashidul Iislam also spoke, disseminating their expertise on the issue. In his remarks, DAM Director General Masud Karim said establishing market linkage between entrepreneurs and farmers has become an urgent need so that the fair price of the agricultural products is ensured to the farmers. He told the meeting that they are extending support in this regard. Masud Karim also said the entrepreneurs with their own efforts are playing vital roles towards development of the country's economy. With this in view, the DAM has adopted a project for generating 20,000 entrepreneurs through boosting their capacity. They will work directly for producing various e xportable agricultural products, including mango, jackfruit, potato, tomato and aromatic rice. Day-long Sarbojanin Penson Fair, workshop held in Rajshahi

A daylong fair and workshop related to the Sarbojanin Pension Scheme (Universal Pension Scheme) was held at Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Government High School playground in the city today (Friday). National Pension Authority (NPA) and Commissioner Office of Rajshahi division jointly organized the divisional event aimed at familiarizing the public in general with the pension scheme along with its contribution to the national economy. Around 200 officials from various government and non-government offices and institutions, public and private banks and other financial establishments showcased the aspects of the pension scheme in 117 stalls. Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister's Office Tofazzal Hossain Mian addressed the opening ceremony as chief guest with Commissioner of Rajshahi division Dr Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir in the chair. Financial Institutions Division Secretary Sheikh Muhammad Salim Ullah, Executive Vice-chairman of Microcredit Regulatory Authority Muhammd Fasiullah and Director General of NGO Affairs Bureau Saidur Rahman also talked about the strategy selection of making the pension scheme successful. Director General (Administration) of Prime Minister's Office Ahsan Kibria Siddiqui spoke on publicity tactics of the universal pension scheme. Subsequently, they also attended a workshop at Jail Training Centre auditorium where NPA Member Golam Mostofa presented a keynote paper highlighting the aspects and significance of the pension scheme. They exchanged views with some of the participants on how to make the pension scheme more successful. Addressing the workshop Tofazzal Hossain Mian said the contribution towards pension will be treated as investment and eligible for tax concession and the monthly pension will be free from income tax. Government will pay part of the subscription for the insolvent and those are of low-income threshold. He also said the government has already started its activities by establishing the National Pension Authority. CAAB engineer killed in city road accident

An engineer of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) was killed in a road accident in front of Dhaka Elevated Expressway near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital today. Police said the accident occurred at about 10 am when a passenger bus of Raida Paribahan crashed through the security wall of the third terminal of the HSIA after losing its control and hit a motorcycle. Civil Aviation Senior Sub Assistant Engineer Maidul Islam was riding a motorcycle along the road and it was run over by the bus, sub-inspector of Airport Police Station Soman Chandra Das confirmed. Critically injured Mainul was rescued from the spot and rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where the on duty doctors declared him dead. Ton-up Habibur propels Gazi Group to DPL Super League

Gazi Group Cricketers confirmed the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) Super League spot as the sixth and last team when they beat City Club by 81 runs at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah today. Habibur Rahman Sohan hastened the victory with his typically aggressive knock as he blasted 81 ball-102 not out, smashing 10 fours and six sixes. Gazi Group's victory eliminated Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's Legends of Rupgang from the Super League race. Despite tasting a 67-run defeat to Shinepukur yesterday, Rupganj were in the race of Super League. If Gazi Group would have lost the game, they could move to Super League thanks to their victory in the head-to-head battle. But it was not to be. City Club indeed couldn't put up any resistance against a rejuvenated Gazi Group. After being asked to bat first, City Club which finished ninth in the 12-team league, were bowled out for just 180 in 49.3 overs with Ruyel Mea triggering the collapse with 3-19. Husen Habib, Abdul Gaffar Jibon and Moin Khan took two wickets apiece . Gazi Group raced to the victory in just 24.1 overs with Sohan playing the anchor role. Opener Anisul Islam Emon hammered 61 off 50 with 10 fours and one six. In the day's other match, Partex Sporting Club edged Rupganj Tigers Cricket Club by three wickets at BKSP-3 ground. 24,620 hectares land brought under Jute cultivation in Gopalganj

A total of 24,620 hectares of land were brought under jute cultivation in all five upazilas of the district with a production target of 67,315 tonnes of jute in the current season. Out of this, 24 thousand hectares of Tosha jute, 600 hectares of Mesta jute and 20 hectares of indigenous jute will be cultivated. Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Abdul Quader Sardar said out of this, 24,000 hectares land were brought under Tosha jute cultivation, 600 hectares under Mesta jute cultivation and 20 hectares under indigenous jute cultivation in the district this season. A target of 67,315 tonnes of jute production has been set from 24,620 hectares of land, he said. Sanjay Kumar Kundu, additional deputy director of DAE said cultivation of jute has been increasing every year here as the growers are getting fair prices for their products. Farmers of the district have started jute cultivation and some areas of the district have been completed the jute cultivation on their lands. A road, park in capital to be named after Qatar’s Emir

A road and a park of the capital will be named after the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani who is scheduled to visit Bangladesh on April 22-23. According to the itinerary, the Emir will inaugurate the park in Kalshi area of Mirpur under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and a road running from Mirpur ECB Chattar to Kalshi Flyover at 3pm on April 23. DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam told BSS that Qatar is one of the closest friendly states of Bangladesh for long. The two countries have fantastic relations after the independence of Bangladesh and a park and a road will be named after the Emir of Qatar to mark his memorable visit, he added. Mentioning a road which was named as Kemal Ataturk, father of the modern Turkey, the DNCC mayor said there is a road in the city's Banani area after Kemal Ataturk. "There is also a road after the name of our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Turkey," he added. Atiqul said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had declared to construct a park and a pla yground in Kalshi area from a rally on February 19 last year. She gave 16 bighas of land for the park and the playground in Kalshi area as a gift to the people of the area, he said. DNCC chief executive officer Mir Khairul Alam said besides having facilities of playing cricket and football and training for youths in the park and playground, there will be separate space for walking and children corner, he added. Ten men Bangladesh Police Football Club earned a hard-fought solitary goal victory over Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra in the ABG Bashundhara Bangladesh Premier League football held at Rafiq Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh on Friday.
