Shakib, Shanto snap Bangladesh’s losing streak in World Cup

DHAKA, Captain Shakib Al Hasan led the side with a stellar allround performance as Bangladesh snapped its six-match losing streak in the ICC Cricket World Cup with a three-wicket win over Sri Lanka at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi today.

His two wickets for 57 runs and 65 ball-82, laced with 12 fours and two sixes, were instrumental in the victory which kept Bangladesh aloft for a spot in Champions Trophy after the hopes for a World Cup semifinal was ruined.

He was unsurprisingly was adjudged man of the match, which made him the first Bangladeshi player to get the award in two World Cups.

Najmul Hossain Shanto complemented his performance with 90 runs as Bangladesh hunted down Sri Lanka 279 (all out in 49.3 overs), with 282-7, leaving 53 balls unused.

The game became heated following Angelo Mathews's 'timed out' dismissal during Sri Lanka's innings. He took the time more than two minutes to be at the crease because of the broken strap of his helmet.

According to ICC playing conditions, opposition captain could appeal for dismissal if a batter takes more than two minutes to be at the crease. Sharp-minded Shakib Al Hasan took the advantage to dismiss Mathews, much to the despair of the Lankan players and fans.

It led to a sledging between the two teams and particularly Shakib was targeted while he was in the crease. However the captain's master class was accompanied by an astute serenity that made the victory almost cake-walk.

Bangladesh lost Tanzid Hasan Tamim in the third over of the chase after he scored 9 runs but Liton Das hit two fours and as many sixes to give the side a flying start.

Dilshan Madushanka trapped him leg-before, bringing Shakib to the crease amid a huge sledging. The under pressure skipper following the side's dismal World Cup show was hardly bothered as he went high gear from the outset to keep Lankan bowlers at bay.

His innings was not chanceless as he survived at the early in his innings due to the butter-fingered Sri Lankan fielders.

After his six-single digit figure, Shanto finally got his rhythm as he joined Shakib in accelerating the innings. The duo stitched 169-run for the third wicket to edge the side closer to the victory.

However one shot too many led Shakib's dismissal, that too off the bowling of Mathews who unsurprisingly gave Shakib an angry send-off.

Soon after the dismissal of Shakib who now stayed century-less since the 2019 World Cup, Shanto who hit a half-century in six-wicket win against Afghanistan in Bangladesh's first match, missed out his first World Cup ton by 10 runs. Mathews again was the bowler as he rattled Shanto's stump with scrambled seam.

Shanto hit 12 fours in his 101 balls knock. But Shakib's whirlwind batting ensured the asking run rate was under control. Bangladesh then lost Mahmudullah Riyad (22), Mushfiqur Rahim (10) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3) cheaply but didn't find it tough to seal the deal with ease. Towhid Hridoy was not out on 15.

Earlier Charith Asalanka guided the side with his second ton, a 105 ball-108, studded with six fours and five sixes.

Opener Pathum Nissanka made next-best 41 while Dhananjaya de Silva scored 34.

Nissanka kept the side rolling after the dismissal of Kusal Perera (4) for single digit figure by pacer Shoriful Islam. Shakib got into act with the wicket of Kusal Mendis who made 19.

Sri Lanka got further setback when Tanzim Hasan Sakib who made his World Cup debut, got the better of Nissanka, leaving them at 72-3.

Asalanka took the onus and got an able support from Sadeera Samawickrama. Shakib returned and broke the dangerous partnership after they added 63 runs for the fourth wicket. Mathews was 'timed out' thereafter and Sri Lanka were at tricky 135-5.

As Bangladesh sensed a chance to bowl Sri Lankan out cheaply, Asalanka again resisted with the support from Dhananjaya. Mehidy Hasan Miraz broke through after they shared 68-run for the sixth wicket.

Asalanka drove the side past 250 and got out in the penultimate over by Tanzim Sakib who took three wickets on debut but was expensive as he conceded 80 runs in his 10 overs.

I felt like I was at war as I wanted to win: Shakib

DHAKA, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan insisted that he had no reservation to ensure his side's victory as he took the decision to inflict a 'timed out' dismissal on Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews without thinking it as 'right or wrong.'

With ICC Champions Trophy at stake, Bangladesh needed to ensure two points and they did it exactly, beating Sri Lanka by three wickets finally. The win helped Bangladesh move up seventh position for the time being.

Mathews took the time more than two minutes to be at the crease because of the broken strap of his helmet. According to ICC playing conditions, opposition captain could appeal for dismissal if a batter takes more than two minutes.

"One of our fielders came to me and said if you appeal now he'll be out. Then I appealed and the umpires asked me if I'm serious or whether I am going to take it back. It's in the laws. I don't know if it's right or wrong. I felt like I was at war and I had to take a decision to make sure my team wins," Shakib told the broadcaster after the match.

"Right or wrong, there will be debates but if it is in the rules I don't mind taking those chances. That (altercation with Mathews) helped, bit more fight, I'm 36 and normally fight doesn't come easily but happy it did today."

Shakib in fact led the side to the victory with his stellar allround performance. He took two wickets for 57 runs and then bludgeoned Sri Lanka bowlers to blast 65 ball-82 as Bangladesh raced to the victory with 53 balls to spare, overhauling Sri Lanka's 279.

Najmul Hossain Shanto made 90 and shared 169-run with Shakib for the third wicket which made sure Bangladesh would successfully chase highest total at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

"When I won toss, didn't have any hesitation to bowl. We've trained here and know there's a lot of dew. It was a very good partnership, and would've loved to finish it off," Shakib added.

Bangladesh began the tournament with a six-wicket win over Afghanistan but thereafter their performance took a huge nosedive as they conceded six straight defeats to be eliminated from the semifinal race.

The performance that Bangladesh would love show indeed some at so late.

"We could have been consistent, that's one disappointment," Shakib remarked.

"There wasn't much for the bowlers, we bowled really well upfront. Spinners kept it tight. Both the spinners bowled really well. Bowling wins us more matches, fast bowlers were bowling really well up to the World Cup. We couldn't live up to our expectations but we knew that we can fight back, we had that mentality."

However the belief to return to the best was there always, Shakib added.

"We kept on believing and we kept on coming back and today it paid off. The ground dimension helped as well, the shorter boundary, there was a lot of pace on the ball, so I just had to use the pace, luckily it came off and from there on I never looked back."

Madhes province government to pile pressure on federal government for rights

Janakpurdham, Nov 6: The Madhes province government has announced protest programmes against the federal government, demanding the implementation of concurrent powers of federal and province, and provincial powers as stated in the Constitution of Nepal.

An all-party meeting summoned by Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav and also attended by other ministers on Monday decided to organize protest programmes to pile pressure on the federal government demanding the implementation of the constitutionally enshrined rights, Home Minister of Province Mohammad Samim said.

Minister Samim said that the province government reached a conclusion to stage a protest programme for the powers adding that the province government was facing difficulties to work for lack of power exercise and questions were raised on federalism on the same basis.

The Madhes province government has stated that it has faced hardships in implementing several laws due to the federal government's reluctance.

Minister Samim stated that Police Adjustment Act, Civil Service Act, laws on Guthi, forest and some other laws are not implemented as the federal government has taken these laws under its control. "So, we are forced to stage protests," he added.

The province government has put its firm stance for the drafting, amending and entire rights on these Acts and laws.

As decided, the members of the council of ministers and leaders of political parties would join to submit a memo to the federal government in the first phase and then they would stage protests in Kathmandu if the demands were not addressed in the first stage.

"Most probably, we will announce the protest progammes before Tihar," UML's chief whip of Madhes Province Assembly Lakhan Das shared.

Most of the politicians in the province seem dissatisfied with the federal government for its reluctance in implementing the concurrent powers of federal and province, and provincial powers.

The province government had also filed six separate cases against the federal government at the Supreme Court's constitutional bench.

PM for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today called upon the global leaders for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza stopping illegal occupation.

"I call upon all parties to ensure humanitarian access and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. I urge world leaders to end this dreadful war, collective punishment, and illegal occupation," she said.

She was addressing the opening session of "International Conference on Women in Islam: Status and Empowerment" as the guest of honour here.

"We must remain united for an independent and sovereign state of Palestine. I will continue to do my part on behalf of our Palestinian brothers and sisters," she continued.

The prime minister said all Muslims women should raise their voices for peace.

"We condemn the Israeli atrocities committed against innocent women and children in Gaza," she said.

It brings memory of the two hundred thousand women and girls who suffered inhuman persecution in the Great Liberation War in 1971, she said.

"It reminds me of the brutal assassination of my parents and other family members, including women and children, on August 15, 1975 carnage," she said.

The premier went on saying that it evokes the scene of thousands of tortured Rohingya women and children from Myanmar who took refuge at our border in August 2017.

The premier has placed a set of suggestions for women in Islam.

The suggestion are:

First, immediate cessation of the conflict in Palestine, and justice for crime against humanity, particularly on women and children;

Second, say 'no' to all crimes, violence, discrimination, and increasing Islam phobia targeted against women and girls;

Third, give added attention to achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls to meet SDG-5;

Fourth, make sure that Muslim women and girls have the choice to present themselves in public in the way they want to, and

Fifth, Bangladesh, as a shining example of the empowerment of women and their role in the mainstream, is ready to share our experience with other friendly Muslim states.

The premier said the OIC is a platform where dialogue on this much-awaited issue is welcome.

Bangladesh very early joined the Women Development Organization (WDO) of the OIC, realizing its potential in women empowerment, she said.

While the WDO has started its journey, she said, " I hope that its mandate can be expanded to incorporate today's needs through a better understanding of Islam. Only then can we dream of an equal, peaceful, and prosperous world. I wish this international conference all success."

Sheikh Hasina commended the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the OIC for celebrating women in Islam at the international conference.

"We eagerly follow the Kingdom's ground-breaking initiatives for women's emancipation. I praise the transformative vision of His Majesty the King and His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince," she said.

Describing the Islam as a religion of peace, harmony, and humanity, she said that the first person to embrace Islam at the call of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was Bibi Khadija, a woman.

Quoting the Holy Quran's Surah An-Nisa, she said: "And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed, Allah is ever over you, an observer."

Bangladesh has a proud legacy of championing women's rights and gender equality, she said.

"We have pioneers like Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, who imagined a women-led world in her book "Sultana's Dream" published in 1905.

Quoting Bangladesh's national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in English, she said: "All the world's superb creations, ever-beneficial, half are done by women, half by men."

Sheikh Hasina said her father, the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, confirmed women's equal status in Bangladesh's Constitution framed under his guidance

Bangabandhu had created provision for 15 reserved seats for women in the first Parliament in 1973.

"As his daughter, I have continued the trend of empowering women and increased the reserved seat to 50 as currently there are 73 female parliamentarians in our National Parliament," the Premier continued.

"Women have always been on the frontlines of our economic development, social reforms, and democratic struggles. I keep calling upon them to work for real change on their own," she said.

She said Bangladesh ranks among the world's top ten countries in a global index on women's political empowerment.

"We have a unique situation where the Speaker of Parliament, Leader of the House, Leader of the Opposition, and Deputy Leader of the Treasury Bench are women. We have one-third of reserved seats for women in our local government bodies," she said.

She said her political party, the Bangladesh Awami League, has been working to increase women's representation at all levels.

"Every time I have been in office, I have tried to remove all barriers to promote women in decision-making.

"I feel proud to see our women holding top positions in administration, the judiciary, universities, the armed forces, financial institutions, and trade bodies," she said.

She went on saying girls from remote areas are shinning in public examinations, competitive recruitments, and national sports in Bangladesh.

"As host of the Islamic University of Technology, I invite young women from OIC Member States to study in this excellent institution," she said

The Prime Minister said currently, the incumbent government is building 564 model mosques and Islamic Centres across the country having facilities for women.

She continued that Bangladesh's recent socio-economic progress is also proof of our women's significant participation.

The female workforce makes up nearly 46% of our formal economy. Women entrepreneurs account for a large portion of our cottage, micro, and small industries, she said.

Mentioning that women have a vibrant presence in IT freelancing, e-commerce, and start-ups, she said, "Our government is working to enhance their access to finance, markets, ideas, and training."

In the public sector, she said they grant six months' paid maternity leave.

"We are engaged with our partners to ensure the protection and well-being of female workers, including those who are employed abroad," she said.

She said their diverse social protection programmes benefit the poor, widow, abandoned, challenged and elderly women.

Under her free housing project called Ashrayan, she said the government is ensuring joint ownership to both husband and wife so that in case of a break-up, the title is transferred to wife.

There is growing awareness against dowry, child marriage, and cyberspace harassment, she said.

"It is now mandatory by law to use a mother's name in all documents of children. We are implementing a National Action Plan on women, peace, and security. Our female peacekeepers are proudly serving in UN missions in Africa," she said.
