Social Welfare employee stabbed to death in Agargaon

A 25-year-old government employee was stabbed to death over previous enmity in the capital’s Agargaon area early Sunday.

Firoz Ahmed was an accounts assistant of the Directorate of Social Welfare.

The victim’s younger brother Nur Alam Miraz said their family had been living with his brother at PWB quarter near Taltola Water Tank in the Agargaon area.

Firoz went out to play badminton at local Eidgaon Field on Saturday night.

On his way home after playing badminton, a group of locals—Talha, Nasir, Raju, Muhid, Nayon, Limon, Jothi, Rana, Rabbi and others – stabbed and hit Firoz with sticks, said his brother.

On information they rushed to the spot and first took him to Suhrawardhy Medical College Hospital. He was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital when his condition worsened.

“My brother succumbed to his injuries at the DMCH upon arrival,” he said.

Though the reason behind the murder could not be known, the victim’s family claimed that the killers had a target to murder him.

Utfal Barua, officer-in-charge of Sher-E-Bangla Nagar police station, said a team has been investigating the murder.

“Primarily it seems that previous enmity might have led to the killing,” the OC added.

BNP removes Abdus Sattar from all party posts

BNP has removed Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan, one of the party lawmakers who recently quit from the 11th parliament, from all posts for “violating party decisions and engaging in anti-party activities.”

“BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council Member Advocate Abdus Sattar has been expelled following his removal from all party posts, including the primary membership as per section 5(c) of the party constitution,” said a press release signed by BNP acting office secretary Sayed Emran Saleh Prince.

The decision will come into effect immediately, it said.

Party sources said the action against Sattar was taken as he bought a nomination paper to contest the by-polls to the Brahmanbaria-2 seat that fell vacant following his resignation as a BNP MP.

Sattar recently resigned from all the posts of the party, including the chairperson’s advisory council member, on personal grounds.

He was first elected MP as an independent candidate from Brahmanbaria-2 ( (Ashuganj and Sarail) in 1979, during BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s tenure, following his failure to secure a party ticket.

He was the founding vice-chairman of the party’s Brahmanbaria unit at that time and worked as the president of Brahmanbaria BNP for 28 years.

A lawyer by profession, Sattar won the parliamentary election to Brahmanbaria-2 four more times as a BNP candidate – in 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2018. He was also a state minister during the BNP-led government of 2001-06.

On December 11 last, he resigned from the parliament along with other BNP lawmakers as per the party’s decision.

BPL 2023: Salahuddin laments lack of DRS

The new season of the Bangladesh Premier League T20 (BPL) is just around the corner, and only five days before the first match, the authority confirmed that there would be no Decision Review System (DRS) for any matches prior to the play-offs.

This announcement came as a surprise to many, including Mohammad Salahuddin, coach of the Comilla Victorians, who expressed his dismay at the lack of DRS from the start of the tournament.

A total of seven teams are set to compete in this season. The new edition will take place in three different venues across Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet.

“Such a big cricket event, it would be a great pity if it does not have DRS,” Salahuddin said on Sunday during a practice session of his team.

“One wrong decision could turn out to be fatal for a team’s chances of winning the tournament. The board has earned considerable money, so I think they should invest in DRS. Moreover, they had plenty of time before the BPL commences,” he added.

It’s going to be the ninth edition of BPL.

The Victorians are the most successful team in BPL history, with three titles. Imrul Kayes, the left-handed opener, led the Victorians to the titles on two occasions.

Salahuddin announced that they have yet to decide who will captain the team for the upcoming BPL season, but hinted that they will likely continue to depend on Imrul’s leadership.

Implementing 10 points a key New Year’s challenge for BNP: Mosharraf

BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday (January 01, 2023) said the implementation of the 10 points to oust the Awami League government is the main challenge for their party in the year 2023.

“Our challenge in the coming days is to implement the 10 points. We also must free our leader (Khaleda Zia) and bring Tarique Rahman back to the country to give him the opportunity to do politics freely,” he said.

Speaking at a rally, the BNP leader also said they will have to have all the arrested party leaders and workers, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Mirza Abbas, freed from jail.

“To do this, the current government has to be removed from power as soon as possible. So, we must get united and move forward with courage to implement the 10 points and bring about a change through it,” he observed.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal arranged the rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club marking its 44th founding anniversary.

Earlier on December 10 last, BNP announced a 10-point charter of demands, including the resignation of the Awami League government and the restoration of the election-time caretaker government system, to restore democracy in the country.

Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said Bangladesh has been passing through a critical time as democracy, the main spirit of the Liberation War, is now destroyed.

He said the country’s people will oust the Awami League government through a united movement to establish a pro-people government. “We’ll build the country based on the 27-point outline of our party when a government is established. The darkness will end inshallah.”

The BNP leader said their party together with the country’s people, especially the students, will create a history by bringing a change in the government through simultaneous movement.

Slamming the government for what he said its repressive acts, he said Awami League will no longer be able to cling to power by suppressing the opposition leaders and activists and arresting and sending them to jail.

“You (govt) could not suppress our movement despite resorting to various repressive acts. People have already taken to the streets and you won’t be spared this time,” the BNP leader observed.

2023 to be the year of patriotic people’s success:

Earlier, BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said 2023 will be the year of success for patriotic people.

“Our goal is to achieve success… we hope that the year 2023 will be the year of success for the patriotic people of Bangladesh. This will also be the year of getting the final result of the movement for the restoration of democracy,” he said.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths together with the leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave, marking the founding anniversary of the party’s student body.

Gayeshwar said the students played a key role in everything the nation achieved since the Language Movement in 1952.

He said the people expect that the students will also now play the main role in restoring democracy and a pro-people government in the country. “We hope that the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal will meet that expectation of people.

“The spirit of restoring democracy and protesting injustice can never be suppressed,” the BNP leader said.

Law Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday said the next general election will be held on time and properly.

“The tenure of the government is for five years and the election will be held in time as per the constitution. BNP is now on the field. The national elections in 2014 and 2018 were free and fair and we are not responsible for the political parties which had not participated in the election. I hope all parties will participate in the next general election,” he said.

The law minister exchanging greetings to the reporters on the occasion of New Year at the Secretariat.

“We are committed to the people of the country and legal action will be taken if anyone interferes with the right of the people to vote,” he added.

Drawing his attention that different organisations are concerned about the human rights violation, the minister said in the tenure of the Sheikh-Hasina-led government, human rights has been established. “Those who are talking about the violation of human rights did not talk about what happened in the past. In that case, you can judge whose statement is reliable.”

Asking about the ongoing development work, Anisul said in this New Year, it is the main challenge to finish the ongoing development works.

Mentioning the Padma Bridge and Metro rail opening as the greatest success in 2022, the minister said all the ongoing development works in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet will be taken as a challenge and completed.
