“BNP will form commission to identify Zia’s killers if we return to power”

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (September 1, 2022) said his party will form a commission to identify those behind the murder of its founder Ziaur Rahman and put them on trial if the party returns to power.

“I would like to say it clearly that if we come to power, we will form a commission for the trial of those involved in the murder of President Ziaur Rahman. We want to know who were behind the murder,” he said.

Fakhrul made the remarks after paying homage to Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his grave, marking BNP’s 44th founding anniversary.

This announcement came a day after Law Minister Anisul Huq told parliament that the government was planning to form a commission by December next to identify those behind the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975.

Fakhrul alleged that Awami League has let loose its “cadres” and law enforcers to thwart a justified movement of the people – protesting price hike of fuel and daily essentials.

He said police and the ruling party activists attacked their party leaders and activists in different parts of the country, leaving many injured.

Besides, the BNP leader said many leaders and activists of their party and its associate bodies were arrested and implicated in different cases.

“We’ve even heard that one of our workers was killed in Fatulla of Narayanganj today (Thursday). We strongly condemn this incident. We demand that the killers be brought to justice immediately,” Fakhrul said.

He warned the government that it will not be able to suppress a just movement for the restoration of democracy by resorting to killing, enforced disappearing, attacks and repression.

Fakhrul, together with senior party leaders, placed wreaths at Zia’s grave around 12pm and joined prayers seeking the salvation of the BNP founder’s departed soul.

BNP Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, were, among others, present.

Ziaur Rahman founded the party on September 1, 1978 with a 19-point programme to build a self-reliant Bangladesh. After his assassination on May 30, 1981, his widow Khaleda took over the party leadership.

BNP vows to avenge blood of its slain workers by ousting the govt

Slamming the government for killing a Jubo Dal activist in Narayanganj by attacking a peaceful programme, BNP on Thursday vowed to launch a united movement to unseat the Awami League from power and avenge the blood of its all slain workers.

“Our Chhatra Dal leader Noor-e-Alam and Swechchasebak Dal leader Abur Rahim were killed in police firing in Bhola while observing a programme protesting the price hike of fuel and essential commodities. Our colleague Shaon was also killed in police firing today (Thursday) in Narayanganj,” said party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

In a brief address prior to bringing out a colourful rally at Naypaltan, he also said many leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies were suffered bullet wounds in different districts, including Netrakona, Sirajganj and Manikganj, as police attacked the party’s founding anniversary programmes.

“To avenge the blood of our brothers, we will defeat them (AL govt) through a united movement together with people. This is our oath on this day,” the BNP leader said.

The party brought out the rally from its central office, marking its 44th founding anniversary. Thousands of leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies holding banners, festoons and photos of the party’s top leaders joined the rally.

The BNP followers started gathering Nayapaltan area since 11 am blocking both sides of the road stretching from Bijoynagar crossing to Fakirerpool, halting traffic in and around the areas that caused immense sufferings to commuters.

The rally began around 4pm from Bijoynagar crossing and ended in front of the Jatiya Press Club.

Fakhrul said many BNP leaders and activists sacrificed their blood for establishing democracy and strengthening the party. “We remember with respect all of them.”

He alleged that the current government obliterated democracy and snatched people’s all rights in a planned way.

“Our leader (Khaleda) who has fought for democracy all her life is now under house arrest. Our acting chairman has been exiled abroad by sentencing him in false cases while our 35 lakh leaders and workers are being harassed by implicating them in false cases,” the BNP leader said.

As people have waged a movement to get their voting rights back, he said the government is trying to suppress it to hang onto power by resorting to repressive acts, enforced disappearance and killing. “But BNP was born to establish democracy.”

“We are loudly saying that we want to remove this fascist Awami League regime and establish a truly democratic government for the sake of democracy. Let’s all unite and defeat this government by taking over the streets,” Fakhrul said.

Onset of northern winter could see spike in Covid hospitalisations, deaths: WHO

Although Covid deaths have dropped across the world, numbers could rise as northern countries head into winter, according to the UN health agency.

“We are now seeing a welcome decline in reported deaths globally. However, with colder weather approaching in the northern hemisphere, it is reasonable to expect an increase in hospitalisations and deaths in the coming months,” World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday.

“Subvariants of Omicron are more transmissible than their predecessors, and the risk of even more transmissible and more dangerous variants remains.”

Vaccination coverage among the most at-risk groups – such as health workers and older persons – also remains too low, especially in poorer countries, Tedros said.

“Living with Covid does not mean pretending the pandemic is over. If you walk in the rain without an umbrella, pretending it is not raining will not help you. You will still get wet. Likewise, pretending a deadly virus is not circulating is a huge risk,” he said.

Worldwide, nearly 600 million cases of Covid have been recorded, some 2.5 years into the pandemic.

Europe is projected to reach 250 million cases in a matter of weeks, Dr Hans Kluge, director of the WHO’s Office for the region, said. Like Tedros, he also anticipates the “winter surge” in cases.

“We have made great strides in addressing the pandemic. But the virus is still circulating widely, still putting people in hospital, still causing too many preventable deaths – some 3,000 in the past week alone, about a third of the global recorded total,” Kluge said.

California wildfires prompt evacuations amid heat wave

California wildfires erupted Wednesday in rural areas, racing through bone-dry brush and prompting evacuations as the state sweltered under a heat wave that could last through Labor Day.

The Route Fire in Castaic in northwestern Los Angeles County raged through about 4,625 acres (1,872 hectares) of hills containing scattered houses. Interstate 5, a major north-south route, was closed by a blaze that burned several hundred acres in only a few hours.

Media reports showed a wall of flames advancing uphill and smoke billowing thousands of feet into the air while planes dumped water from nearby Castaic Lake. There were no immediate reports of damage to buildings but a mobile home park with 94 residences was evacuated.

An elementary school also was evacuated. Temperatures in the area hit 107 degrees (42 Celsius) and winds gusted to 17 mph (27 kph), forecasters said.

Eight firefighters were treated for heat-related problems, including six who were sent to hospitals, but all were in good condition, Los Angeles County Fire Department Deputy Chief Thomas Ewald said.

More injuries were expected as crews cope with extreme heat that was expected to stretch into next week, Ewald said during a news conference Wednesday night.

“Wearing heavy firefighting gear, carrying packs, dragging hose, swinging tools, the folks out there are just taking a beating,” he said.

Aircraft would continue to drop water and fire retardant on the blaze overnight and winds could shift to the north through the night, causing the fire to burn back on itself, Ewald said.

Ewald also said there could be other fires in LA County as the searing heat continues. Bulldozers to cut firebreaks will be staffed around the county Thursday as a precaution, he said.

“This is the fire that’s burning right now. But we have 4,000 square miles (10,360 square kilometers) of LA County that we have to consider for tomorrow,” he said.

Another fire burned at least four buildings, including a home, and prompted evacuations in the Dulzura area in eastern San Diego County near the Mexican border. It swiftly grew to more than 1,600 acres (647.5 hectares) acres and prompted evacuation orders for at least 400 homes, authorities said.

State Route 94 was closed. The Mountain Empire Unified School District will be closed Thursday, officials said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced that the Tecate port of entry with Mexico closed three hours early on Wednesday night because of the fire and wouldn’t reopen until conditions improved to ensure “the safety of the traveling public.” Travelers could continue to use the 24-hour Otay Mesa crossing.

No injuries were immediately reported, but there were “multiple close calls” as residents rushed to flee, said Capt. Thomas Shoots with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

“We had multiple 911 calls from folks unable to evacuate” because their homes were surrounded by the fire, Shoots told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The National Weather Service said many valleys, foothills, mountains and desert areas of the state remained under an elevated fire risk because of low humidity and high temperatures, which set several records for the day. The hottest days were expected to be Sunday and Monday.

Wildfires have sprung up this summer throughout the Western states. The largest and deadliest blaze in California this year erupted in late July in Siskyou County, near the Oregon state line. It killed four people and destroyed much of the small community of Klamath River.

Scientists have said climate change has made the West warmer and drier over the last three decades and will continue to make weather more extreme and wildfires more frequent and destructive. Across the American West, a 22-year megadrought deepened so much in 2021 that the region is now in the driest spell in at least 1,200 years.

Watering while Black: anatomy of a pastor’s Alabama arrest

Michael Jennings wasn’t breaking any laws or doing anything that was obviously suspicious; the Black minister was simply watering the flowers of a neighbor who was out of town.

Yet there was a problem: Around the corner, Amber Roberson, who is white, thought she was helping that same neighbor when she saw a vehicle she didn’t recognize at the house and called police.

Within minutes, Jennings was in handcuffs, Roberson was apologizing for calling 911 and three officers were talking among themselves about how everything might have been different.

Harry Daniels, an attorney representing Jennings, said he plans to submit a claim to the city of Childersburg seeking damages and then file a lawsuit. “This should be a learned lesson and a training tool for law enforcement about what not to do,” he said.

A 20-minute video of the episode recorded on one of the officers’ body cameras shows how quickly an uneventful evening on a quiet residential street devolved into yet another potentially explosive situation involving a Black man and white law enforcement authorities.

___

“Whatcha doing here, man?” Officer Chris Smith asked as he walked up to Jennings, who held a hose with a stream of water falling on plants beside the driveway outside a small, white house.

“Watering flowers,” Jennings replied from a few feet away. Lawn decorations stood around a mailbox; fresh mulch covered the beds. It was more than an hour before sunset on a Sunday in late May, the kind of spring evening when people often are out tending plants.

Smith told Jennings that a caller said she saw a strange vehicle and a person who “wasn’t supposed to be here” at the house. Jennings told him the SUV he was talking about belonged to the neighbor who lives there.

“I’m supposed to be here,” he added. “I’m Pastor Jennings. I live across the street.”

“You’re Pastor Jennings?”

“Yes. I’m looking out for their house while they’re gone, watering their flowers,” said Jennings, still spraying water.

“OK, well, that’s cool. Do you have, like, ID?” Smith asked.

“Oh, no. Man, I’m not going to give you ID,” Jennings said, turning away.

“Why not?” Smith asked.

“I ain’t did nothing wrong,” the pastor replied.

___

Jennings, 56, was born in rural Alabama just three years after George C. Wallace pledged “segregation forever” at the first of his four inaugurations as governor. His parents grew up during a time when racial segregation was the law and Black people were expected to act with deference to white people in the South.

“I know the backdrop,” Jennings said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, the officers who confronted him on May 22 work for a majority-white town of about 4,700 people that’s located 55 miles (88 kilometers) southeast of Birmingham down U.S. 280. White people control city hall and the police department.

Jennings went into the ministry not long after graduating from high school and hasn’t strayed far from his birthplace of nearby Sylacauga, where he leads Vision of Abundant Life Ministries, a small, nondenominational church, when not doing landscaping work or selling items online. In 1991, he said, he worked security and then trained to be a police officer in a nearby town but left before taking the job full time.

“That’s how I knew the law,” he said.

Alabama law allows police to ask for the name of someone in a public place when there’s reasonable suspicion the person has committed or is about to commit a crime. But that doesn’t mean a man innocently watering flowers at a neighbor’s home must provide identification when asked by an officer, according to Hank Sherrod, a civil rights lawyer who reviewed the full police video at the request of the AP.

“This is an area of the law that is pretty clear,” said Sherrod, who has handled similar cases in north Alabama, where he practices.

___

Cuffed and seated between two shrubs on the front stoop of his neighbor’s home, Jennings told Smith and Gable how his son, a university athletics administrator, had been wrongly “arrested and profiled” in Michigan after a young woman at a cheerleading competition said a Black man had hugged her.

Jennings said he felt “anger and fear” during his interaction with the Alabama police officers not only because of what happened to his son but due to the accumulated weight of past police killings — George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others — plus lower-profile incidents and shootings in Alabama.

“That’s why I didn’t resist,” he said.

___

Jennings was already in the back of a patrol car by the time Roberson, the white woman who called police, emerged. Jennings, she told officers, was a neighbor and a friend of the home’s owner, Roy Milam.

“OK. Does he have permission here to be watering flowers?” Smith asked.

“He may, because they are friends,” she replied. “They went out of town today. He may be watering their flowers. It would be completely normal.”

Milam told the AP that was exactly what happened: He’d asked Jennings to water his wife’s flowers while they were camping in the Tennessee mountains for a few days.

A few moments later, officers told Roberson that a license plate check showed the gold sport-utility vehicle that prompted her call in the first place belonged to Milam. They got Jennings out of the patrol car and he told them his first and last name.

“I didn’t know it was him,” Roberson told police. “I’m sorry about that.”

Read:Protests erupt in Michigan after police officer kills black man: U.S. media

___

The officers spent much of their remaining time on the scene in a discussion that began with a question from Smith: “What are we going to do with him?”

After weighing different options, they settled on a charge of obstructing governmental operations that was thrown out within days in city court. The police chief who sought the dismissal after reviewing the 911 call and bodycam video, Richard McClelland, resigned earlier this month. City officials haven’t said why he quit, but city attorney Reagan Rumsey said it had nothing to do with what happened to Jennings.

Childersburg’s interim police chief, Capt. Kevin Koss, didn’t return emails seeking comment.

___

Michael Jennings is still friends with Milam, the neighbor with the flowers. Milam, who is white, said he feels bad about what happened, and the two men will continue watching out for each other’s homes, just as they’ve done for years.

“He is a good neighbor, definitely. No doubt about it,” Milam said.

Jennings also recently spoke with Roberson for the first time since the arrest.

The pastor, who lives less than a third of a mile from the police station, said he has not seen any of the three officers who were involved in his arrest since that day. He believes all three should be fired or at least disciplined.

“I feel a little paranoid,” he said.

Nonetheless, he still waves at police cars passing through his neighborhood, partly out of the Christian call to be kind to others.

“You’re supposed to love your neighbor, no matter what,” he said. “But you’ve heard the saying, ‘Keep your enemies close to you, too.’”

Bangladesh team shines at 15th International Earth Science Olympiad 2022

Bangladesh has won eight medals in the 15th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) 2022, hosted virtually by Italy from August 25 to 31.

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Chatterton Dickson greeted all the winners and medalists in person at the British High Commission.

“Climate change is an ever-escalating global crisis and Bangladesh is one of the worst-affected countries in the world. I am delighted to see young Bangladeshi students leading the way in tackling climate change and building awareness,” he said.

“My heartiest congratulations to the Bangladesh team who won eight medals in this year’s International Earth Science Olympiad.”

The British High Commission is proud to partner with BYEI and support the team, Dickson said.

Founder of BYEI, Shamir Shehab, said for Bangladesh to become a climate-resilient nation, they would need a generation of environmental stewards who will act as practitioners, scholars, and policymakers to generate knowledge and provide thought leadership.

“NEO is one of the programs through which BYEI has been striving to develop these stewards since its founding in 2009.”

IESO is an annual global competition on earth and environmental sciences for secondary and higher secondary school students.

This year, 1000 students from across Bangladesh participated in a number of highly competitive regional and national rounds, with the top 8 students winning a place on the national team.

This year, the Bangladesh team had its best performance since its debut in 2012, securing a total of 8 medals in the prestigious global competition.

Professor Younus Ahmed Khan of Rajshahi University and Aryan Andaleeb Azim, a former NEO national winner, served as Mentors and Advisors for the Bangladesh team.

Soumya Saha from Notre Dame College, Sabit Ibtisam Anan from Dhaka Residential Model college, M.S. Mottaquin Tashin from Dhaka Imperial College, and Syed Iftekhar Salam Dipto from Dhaka College – each of them earned a bronze medal in the individual category of the competition.

Bangladesh Team 2 consisting of Muntasir Rahman from Adamjee Cantonment College, Ilhamul Azam from Govt. Hazi Muhammad Mohsin College, Soumya Saha, and S.M. Mottaquin Tashin earned a silver medal for the National Team Field Investigation (NFTI) presentation on the causes of recent landslides in Rangamati, Bangladesh.

The other Bangladesh team consisting of Abrar Azim Hrittek from Cantonment Public School and College, Faiza Islam from Rajshahi College, and Syed Iftekhar Salam Dipto earned a bronze medal for their NFTI presentation on groundwater contamination and soil nutrient depletion in different riverine cities in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative (BYEI), a youth-led environmental nonprofit, selected the Bangladesh team through a nationwide competitive selection process called the National Earth Olympiad (NEO).

NEO is an education and knowledge movement that aims to mainstream earth and environmental science education across Bangladesh, with annual competitions since 2012.

This year, the Olympiad was supported by the British High Commission in Dhaka, through the UK Government’s roles as Commonwealth Chair-in-Office and host of COP26.

Professors Kazi Matin Ahmed and Younus Ahmed Khan, the Co-Convenors and Advisors of NEO 2022, said: “We are very pleased with Bangladesh’s performance this year and we hope to do better in the coming years. And we aim to spread the earth and environmental sciences education and consciousness among youth across Bangladesh through the NE.”

Asia Cup 2022: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka seek solutions to their top-order batting woes

In recent years, the cricket clash between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has offered tense moments, be it in any format of the game. The rivalry between these two Asian sides started when Chandika Hathurusingha took over Sri Lanka’s national side’s head coach role one month after quitting the Bangladesh job in November 2017. The last match of the Group B of the Asia Cup 2022 promises to be another exciting affair as the winner will secure a place in the Super Four round. Both sides have a few big issues to solve before the contest. The Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match preview is discussed in this article.

Which side has the advantage in the T20I head-to-head contests?

Bangladesh have never defeated Sri Lanka in a bilateral Twenty20 International series. Sri Lanka have won three of the four T20I series these two nations have played, with one series ending in a draw. Sri Lanka have eight victories overall while Bangladesh have four in the twelve games they have played against one another.

In the Asia Cup event, Sri Lanka have a big edge over Bangladesh with 11 wins. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have only played the Lankans once in the Twenty20-format Asia Cup, which they won by 23 runs at the SBNCS in 2016.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka: Which team has the better T20I record at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium?

Dubai’s international cricket stadium will host the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match. Dubai’s cricket ground first hosted a T20I match in 2009 between Pakistan and Australia. Since then, 78 matches have been played at this venue, where the batting first team has won 36 of them and the batting second team has won 41 games. However, chasing has become a lot easier nowadays at this venue. Since January 2021, fielding first have won 14 games out of 16. This stat clearly shows how important the toss will be in the match.

Neither Bangladesh nor Sri Lanka have an impressive record at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh have played only one match at this ground, against Australia in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, which they lost by 8 wickets. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have played four games at this venue and lost three of them.

Asia Cup Cricket 2022, Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh: Match Preview

The match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has unofficially become a knockout one. The Afghanistan national men’s T20 team has already confirmed the top position of the Group B points table with two back-to-back wins. Both teams have already started to play mind games by attacking each other with remarks. Sri Lankan Captain Dasun Shanaka made a comment about the Bangladesh team after their demoralizing loss to Afghanistan, which has spurred a controversy.

Shanaka thinks Bangladesh have a very weak bowling attack which has only Shakib and Mustafizur as world-class bowlers. Bangladesh’s team director, Khaled Mahmud Sujon has responded by saying that he doesn’t see any class bowler in the Lankan current T20I setup. This type of mind game is common when two sides consider each other a bitter rival. However, it won’t affect much of the players’ performances. A team with a better game plan and proper execution on the field will have a greater chance to win the contest. The Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match will start at 8 p.m. (Bangladesh Standard Time) in Dubai.

Bangladesh

The main problem of the Bangladesh team at the moment is that their batters haven’t batted the way a T20 batter should bat. Despite taking actions to improve players’ batting techniques, their approach during the match has been ineffective. Bangladesh players have to find a way to improve their batting approach before the Sri Lanka match. They risk losing this game in the same way they lost to Afghanistan if they don’t do it.

Team director Khaled Mahmud Sujon said that pacer Mustafizur Rahman shouldn’t be considered as an automatic choice in the Bangladesh team. Therefore, except for captain Shakib Al Hasan and vice-captain Afif Hossain, none of the Bangladesh players has a guaranteed spot in the playing XI based on recent performances. Who will make the Bangladesh playing XI then after a disappointing performance against the Afghan side?

Probable Playing XI (Bangladesh): Parvez Hossain Emon, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Afif Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim (wicket-keeper), Mahmudullah Riyad, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed

Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan team has the same problem as Bangladesh. However, their batters know how to bat in the Twenty20 format, which is an encouraging point for them. The Lankan side has some tremendously talented power hitters, but they lack experience on the international scene. One thing is sure, Sri Lanka will be aiming to make a strong comeback in the do-or-die contest against Bangladesh in order to secure a Super Four berth in the Asia Cup 2022.

The Sri Lankan team will likely make some adjustments in their team in order to put up a strong playing XI against the Bangladesh side. Changes to the middle order in the Sri Lankan playing XI are very likely.

Probable Playing XI (Sri Lanka): Kusal Mendis (wicket-keeper), Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Ashen Bandara, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Dilshan Madushanka

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, Group B Match: Weather report and toss prediction

In Dubai, Thursday will be quite hot—around 39 C. In these sweltering conditions, athletes will need to keep hydrated and in shape. The toss-winning captain is expected to elect to field first at this venue since chasing is getting more simple in Dubai these days.

Bottom Line

Bangladesh have lost 14 of their last 16 completed games, while Sri Lanka have lost 10 of their last 14 T20I matches. However, Sri Lanka have won two thrilling matches against Australia this year. In contrast, Bangladesh have only achieved two victories this year, both over weaker opponents. Therefore, no side will start the game as the favourite. The team with the strongest lineup for their playing eleven and the ability to carry out their game plan through individual performances will have a better chance of winning the match.
