BPL: From “world’s second-best” to “best domestic” league

There was a time when Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials used to claim that the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) was the second-best T20 cricket league in the world. According to them, the BPL was positioned right after the Indian Premier League (IPL). But now, they say, they are working to make the BPL “one of the best leagues” in the country.

The next season of the BPL is slated to be played from early January to mid-February, 2023. BCB has already drafted the names of the owners of the seven participating franchises. If all goes well, the franchises will be finalized soon after the prospective owners pay the bank guarantee of BDT 100 million.

At least two other leagues are scheduled to be played at the same time as the BPL. As a result, the BPL may not be able to attract the attention of the best foreign players. Many have already signed contracts with teams in the other two leagues, one of which will be held in the United Arab Emirates and the other in South Africa.

Ismail Haider Mallick, member secretary of the BPL governing council, today said, “BPL was a good T20 event when there were not many leagues like it.”

“Now too many leagues are there – CPL is happening, PSL is here, UAE is going to host a league and South Africa is also on the scene. Now, it’s tough to compare (BPL) with other (international) leagues. We want to make it one of the best domestic leagues. ”

The first edition of the BPL was played in 2012. Four years after that, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) started the Pakistan Super League (PSL). While BPL is still trying to establish its brand, PSL is generating a lot of money for PCB.

“It costs a lot to host an event like BPL,” Ismail added. “To make it bigger, we have to sell the ownership of a franchise for a lot of money. But the reality is, we cannot even host it as a home-and-away event. We don’t have enough venues for it. What we are looking forward to is making it one of our best domestic events. ”

Since BPL may fail to attract the attention of foreign players this season, BCB is going to relax conditions. Ismail said a franchise will be able to sign a foreign player at any point of the tournament, and they will also be able to sign a foreign player for any period of time.

It means if a franchise gets a player for only two matches, they are allowed to sign the player. At the same time, Ismail said, a franchise can play two foreign players in a match instead of four.

BCB has already fixed the remuneration of the players. According to BCB, the local players in the A category will get BDT 8 million, while the players in the lowest category will generate half a million taka.

Every team is allowed to sign one local player directly out of the draft, but there is no limit to signing a foreign player. The BCB will not decide how much money a team will pay to recruit a foreign cricketer outside the draft.

Women and Men’s Cricket : Same day same game same win margin but …

Bangladesh women beat Ireland by 7 runs and Bangladesh men beat UAE by 7 runs in a rare coincidence, but it meant two very different reactions. The women’s team took the WC Qualifiers trophy three times in a row with yesterday’s victory, though Ireland fought hard.

Bangladesh men also played a practice match against a lowly rated UAE and had a close win, but it was embarrassing to watch. One team is going up while the other is in decline.

The Women

Bangladesh and Ireland Women, the two finalists, had already reached the World Cup stage, so the stake was low. However, it showed some interesting features.

The BD Women’s team is strong, but it still lacks the killer blow delivery capacity that a team needs to win on the global stage. Bangladesh did win the Asia Cup, beating India, but India has gone ahead and beat England last week. The West Indies men’s team is not particularly strong, but their women’s team—previous cup winners—is. So Bangladesh had better watch out about the possibility of bad days on the big stage.

Both India and Pakistan have also improved, and India’s 3-0 win against England last week is a reminder that while we did beat them, it’s not the same team anymore. And SA and others have better records than us.

One reason why the women’s team is not pushing up as much as it could be is a lack of sponsorship and investment. Globally, women’s cricket has yet to catch on, so ICC dole money is low for the qualifying countries. The media has only recently begun to get interested, and so promoting it as a money-making sport is important. This is already happening, but not enough. But betting sites are already active, which means more crowds and that will hopefully translate into funds for Women cricket.

British pound hits record low against dollar

The British pound fell to all-time low against the U.S. dollar early Monday after Treasury chief Kwasi Kwarteng pledged a sweeping package of tax cuts, fueling concerns about the government’s economic policy as the United Kingdom teeters toward recession.

The pound fell as low as $1.0373, its lowest level since the decimalization of the currency in 1971, before rallying to above $1.08 in London early afternoon trading.

The weakening currency piles pressure on the U.K.’s new Conservative government, which has gambled that slashing taxes — and increasing borrowing to compensate — will spur economic growth. Many economists say it’s more likely to fuel already high inflation, push down the pound and drive up the cost of U.K. government borrowing — a potential perfect storm of economic headwinds.

Despite mounting concern, the government dug in its heels Monday.

“We’re not going to be commenting on daily market movements,” said the prime minister’s spokesman, Max Blain. “This is a plan for the medium to long term.”

The British currency has lost more than 5% of its value against the dollar since Friday, when Kwarteng announced the U.K.’s biggest tax cuts in 50 years.

The government plans to cut 45 billion pounds ($49 billion) in taxes as well as spend billions to help consumers and businesses struggling with high energy bills that are driving a cost-of-living crisis. The combination has sparked investor concern about spiraling government debt.

Kwarteng and Prime Minister Liz Truss, who took office three weeks ago, are betting that lower taxes and reduced bureaucracy eventually will generate enough additional tax revenue to cover government spending. Economists suggest it is unlikely the gamble will pay off.

Opposition Labour Party economy spokeswoman Rachel Reeves accused the government of “a return to trickle-down economics, an idea that has been tried, has been tested and has failed.”

“They are not gambling with their money — they are gambling with yours,” she told an audience at the party’s annual conference Monday.

The new and untested Truss, who replaced Boris Johnson as prime minister on Sept. 6, also faces pressure from a nervous Conservative Party, which faces an election within two years.

Some Conservatives have welcomed the tax-cutting moves as a return to free-market values after years of state intervention in the economy during the coronavirus pandemic. But others worry it is unconservative for the government to rack up huge debts that taxpayers will eventually have to pay.

Kwarteng insisted the government was acting responsibly — and said there were more tax cuts to come.

“We’ve only been here 19 days. I want to see, over the next year, people retain more of their income because I believe that it is the British people that are going to drive this economy,” he told the BBC.

As it is cutting taxes, the government plans to cap electricity and natural gas prices for homes and businesses to help cushion price rises that have been triggered by Russia’s war in Ukraine and have sent inflation to a near 40-year high of 9.9%.

This program will cost 60 billion pounds, and the government will borrow to finance it, Kwarteng said Friday.

He said Sunday that it was the right policy because the government needed to help consumers squeezed by the unprecedented pressures caused by the war in Ukraine and the pandemic.

Britain can afford the cost because its debt as a percentage of gross domestic product is the second lowest among the Group of Seven large industrial economies, Kwarteng said. He said the government would announce a “medium-term fiscal plan” for reducing the nation’s debt in the coming months.

Sterling is not the only currency showing weakness. The euro also hit a fresh 20-year low against the dollar as the war in Ukraine drives fears about recession and energy security ahead of the winter.

While the pound’s slide has accelerated in recent days, the currency has fallen steadily against the dollar for more than a year as investors sought the security of U.S. assets amid the global economic shocks.

The pound’s decline against the dollar also has been fueled by the Bank of England not keeping pace with the U.S. Federal Reserve’s efforts to rein in inflation. Britain’s central bank on Thursday raised interest rates by half a percentage point, compared with large three-quarter-point increase by the Fed last week. But U.K. inflation is the highest among major economies, and the bank predicted that Britain could already be in recession, which it defines as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

The bank’s rate-setting Monetary Policy Committee is not due to meet again until Nov. 3, but many economists say it may have to hike rates sooner if the pound’s slide continues.

Susannah Streeter, senior investment and markets analyst at financial services firm Hargreaves Lansdown, said it was difficult to know how low the pound could fall.

“It depends, I think, now on what the Bank of England does in response to sterling’s most recent fall,” she said. “There’s been this dramatic loss of confidence in the government’s economic management. But now the ball is in the Bank of England’s court.”

Japan, WFP to provide $4.3mn food aid to Rohingyas in Bangladesh

The government of Japan and WFP on Monday signed an exchange of notes to provide food and nutrition assistance to the Rohingyas in Bhasan Char and to develop agricultural infrastructure in Cox’s Bazar.

The contribution of USD 4.3 million will be used for critical food assistance through the e-voucher system for the Rohingya refugees living in Bhasan Char and will help further the development of agricultural infrastructure such as irrigation system, canal excavation, and new roads for the Bangladeshi community in Cox’s Bazar.

“Japan is an essential partner for WFP, and we are grateful for their staunch support of development in Bangladesh and of our humanitarian efforts in the country,” said Dom Scalpelli, the resident Representative and Country Director of WFP Bangladesh.

Scalpelli said this new contribution will help them continue to provide life-saving food assistance on the island of Bhasan Char and will greatly benefit the Bangladeshi community in Cox’s Bazar.

Following the emergency grant of USD 2 million in January. Japan decided to provide additional assistance to Bhasan Char, with the “strong hope” that this contribution will respond to the urgent food and nutrition needs of the Rohingya population on Bhasan Char, as well as to enhance the agricultural environment in Cox’s Bazar.

“During my recent visit to Cox’s Bazar, I saw the dedicated and professional work of WFP and its partners. Food assistance by E-Voucher in the Cox’s Bazar camps is truly innovative, and it is our great pleasure that the innovative approach will be expanded to Bhasan Char with this funding,” said Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki.

As the Rohingya crisis has stepped into the sixth year, it is imperative to continue funding for better and dignified lives of refugees, while making every effort for the early repatriation to Myanmar, he said.

“Durable solutions of this crisis will be conducive to realizing the vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, Japan will stand by the government and the people of Bangladesh in supporting the Rohingya response,” said Naoki.

Since the beginning of the emergency in August 2017, Japan has been a steadfast supporter of the Rohingya refugee response in Bangladesh, contributing over USD $170 million to UNHCR and other UN agencies and NGOs in Bangladesh, including through this new funding.

AL caught in Jamaat’s trap: BNP

BNP Standing Committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku on Monday said Awami League (AL) has been caught in a trap of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh.

“They (AL)) cancelled the registration of Jamaat but did not outlaw it. Should I say they have a secret relation with Jamaat,” he stated.

Speaking at a rally, the BNP leader said the ruling party always tried to make a political gain by involving BNP with Jamaat, but it is time now to censure Awami League involving Jamaat. “Jamaat is an Urdu word like Awami. So, calling Awami-Jamaat instead of BNP-Jamaat will match better.”

He said when Jammat was with BNP it was called a party of war criminals. “But why didn’t you still declare them illegal? It means Awami League has fallen into the trap of Jamaat. “From today, it’ll be called an Awami-Jamaat (pact). BNP-Jamaat (pact) will no longer exists.”

As part of the party’s programme to hold 16 rallies in the capital, the Dhanmondi zone of BNP’s Dhaka south city unit arranged the rally in a field near Sikdar Medical College Hospital at Hazaribagh in protest against the price hike of fuel, daily essentials and the killing of four opposition leaders in Bhola, Narayanganj and Munshiganj in police firing.

Before the start of the rally, activists of BNP and the ruling Awami League locked in a chase and counter-chase in the Hazaribagh area, leaving at least 25 people, including two journalists, injured.

The clash erupted around 2:55 pm as the supporters of local Awami League MP Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin tried to obstruct BNP activists from joining their rally venue.

AL caught in Jamaat’s trap: BNP

Both groups also engaged in a chase and counter-chase and beat their opponents with sticks until police rushed in and brought the situation under control.

The rally ended peacefully under the watchof a huge number of law enforcers.

About the clash, Tuku said they held the rally braving many obstacles as the ruling party men attacked BNP activists from different lanes and alleys on their way to the programme.

He thanked law enforcers for extending cooperation to BNP in holding the rally.

Recalling that many members of the police sacrificed their lives for democracy during the Liberation War, Tuku called upon the law enforcers to stand beside people who are carrying out a struggle for democracy as their predecessors did.

He said their party activists are now being forced to take sticks in their hands for their self-protection since the ruling party men are attacking them in different parts of the country.

The BNP leader said their party has been in a movement for establishing people’s rights and restoring democracy instead of going to power.

Speaking at the programme, BNP south city unit convener Abdus Salam slammed the ruling party for attacking their leaders and activists without any provocation.

He also expressed regrets as some journalists came under attack during the clash with ruling party activists.

How Mostaq, Zia, BNP championed Bangabandhu’s murderers: Journalist Ajoy Das Gupta recalls

An infamous decree that was first implemented by Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad and later institutionalized by succeeding military governments and contributed to the protection of the murderers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the majority of his family, according to researchers, is at the root of Bangladesh’s long tradition of impunity.

According to Ekushey Padak-winning journalist Ajoy Das Gupta, this black law was created 40 days after the horrifying death of the nation’s founding father with the sole purpose of shielding the murderers from the reach of the law.

The Indemnity Ordinance was first introduced on September 26, 1975, by Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad, who immediately after Bangabandhu’s death seized state authority and assumed the presidency.

The Indemnity Ordinance was maintained after Mostaq’s tenure, which lasted until November 6, 1975. Gen Ziaur Rahman, who later created Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), also embraced killers of the Father of the Nation by granting them posts in Bangladesh missions across the world.

Not only were those murderers granted immunity, they were also permitted to run newspapers, form political parties, and seek for public office—possibly the clearest violation of human rights and mocking the concept of freedom earned with a sea of blood.

After Bangabandhu was killed, Zia, who had been the deputy army chief in 1975, moved to the position of army chief. Zia even permitted the murderers to occupy high-ranking government positions and mingle with foreign intelligence services who were working to undermine Bangladesh.

Self-confessed murderer, Col Faruque, was permitted to run for president in the 1986 elections during the administration of the second military dictator Ershad, and he even used the national broadcast channel and radio to deliver his speech to the nation. Bazlul Huda, another Mujib killer, also made it to the legislature.

According to Ajoy Das Gupta, Khaleda Zia was instrumental in the “Freedom Party” taking shape. Major Rashid, another self-confessed Bangabandhu killer, was elected to the parliament for a limited time following the contentious polls on February 15, 1996.

Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who managed to survive because they were abroad on that terrible night, continued to carry the burden of injustice up until 1996.

Only after she was voted back to power in 1996, Sheikh Hasina went ahead to get the trial started under the due process of law. Some of the killers were brought to book after she returned to power in 2009.

Nevertheless, despite the repeated cries of Bangladesh’s pro-liberation citizens and the family of Mujib, some of those murderers are still able to find refuge in countries like the US and the UK. And yet, these countries have the audacity to lecture Bangladesh on human rights.

A 13-year-old teenage boy was tortured to death after being tied to a tree over a trifling matter in Eidgaon upazila of Cox’s Bazar district on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Sazzad, son of Nurul Huda of Uttar Sat Jhulakata village in the upazila.

Mahfuzul Islam, superintendent of Cox’s Bazar Police, said a complaint has been lodged with Eidgaon Police.

Police registered a murder case following the complaint later.

Police also arrested Mohammad Alam, the prime accused in the case in the small hours of Monday. The others accused were identified as Abdus Salam alias Tuilla, 55, son of Saber Ahmed, Minuara Begum, 40, wife of Abdus Salam and Nurul Azim alias Kalu, 15, son of Abdus Salam.

India cites “hate speech” for wanting to block 45 YouTube videos

Based on the inputs from intelligence agencies, the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has directed YouTube to block 45 videos from 10 channels.

Orders to block the concerned videos were issued on September 23, 2022 under the provisions of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, said the Press Information Bureau of India on Monday.

The content included “fake news” and “morphed videos” spread with the intent to induce hatred among religious communities. Examples include false claims such as the government taking away the religious rights of certain communities, violent threats against religious communities, declaration of civil war in India, etc.

Such videos were found to have the potential to cause communal disharmony and disrupt public order in the country.

Some of the videos blocked by the ministry were being used to spread disinformation on issues related to Agnipath scheme, Indian Armed Forces, India’s national security apparatus, Kashmir, etc.

The content was observed to be “false and sensitive” from the perspective of national security and India’s friendly relations with foreign States.

Certain videos depicted erroneous external boundary of India with parts of JandK and Ladakh outside the Indian territory. Such cartographic misrepresentation was found to be detrimental to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India.

Speaking on the issue, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said that the Government of India remains committed to thwart any attempts at undermining India’s sovereignty and integrity, national security, foreign relations, and public order.

Apple’s iPhone 14 now being assembled in India

US technology giant Apple has said it started assembling its iPhone 14 in India, world’s second-largest smartphone market, to shift some production away from China.

Apple partner Foxconn, which makes the majority of the world’s iPhones, is producing the device at its Sriperumbudur factory near Chennai, marking the first time the company has shifted production from China to India this quickly after the launch of a new iPhone.

The Cupertino-based giant began locally assembling smartphones in India in 2017, but those were older models.

The marquee device will go on sale in India later this year, according to TechCrunch.

JPMorgan said this month that Apple will move 5 percent of its global iPhone 14 production to India by late 2022, and could move 25 percent of its entire iPhone production line to the country by 2025.

As part of their “China-plus one” or “China-plus two” strategy, major companies are now looking at India.

Apple, which still relies heavily on China for the majority of iPhone production, is seeking alternatives as Xi Jinping’s administration clashes with the US government and imposes lockdowns, hurting economic activities.

The presence of the foreign production giants, coupled with ample labour resources and competitive labour costs, make India a desirable location, JP Morgan said.

Also, the country has attracted investments from Apple manufacturing partners Foxconn and Wistron in recent years by offering lucrative subsidies.

Many hope Apple will make its handsets affordable in India as the company expands its manufacturing capacity in the country.

The base iPhone 14 model, which is priced at $799 in the US, costs 79,900 Indian rupees ($980); the entry iPhone Pro Max model costs $1,717 in India, compared to its $1,099 sticker price in the US, according to TechCrunch.
