Govt has permanently blocked 22,000 porn sites and 6,000 gambling sites: Mustafa Jabbar

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar today said that robotics, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) will shape the future.

The minister said this while attending a policy dialogue on safe use of technology in establishing peace and extending democracy, arranged by Bangladesh Enterprise Institute at a Dhaka hotel.

Terming internet connectivity as mandatory for the digital age, Jabbar said that the government has taken up a project to bring the entire country under high speed internet.

“To face the challenges posed by digital technology, first we need to eliminate digital divide. Everyone has to be digitally competent to enjoy the benefits of the upcoming technology-based world. If you keep your child away from the digital spheres, he/she will lag behind,” said Jabbar.

Acknowledging that there are both good and bad sides of digital technology, the minister said that digital technology won’t have adverse impact on the state, society and people if everyone is also aware and cautious of its dark side.

“The government has permanently blocked a total of 22,000 porn sites and 6,000 gambling sites. We’ve also achieved great success in removing harmful content from the virtual world through improving our ties with social media giants like Facebook and others. But such progress won’t be of any use if the consumers of digital technologies don’t practice restraint, which can only be done through digital literacy,” added Jabbar.

The dialogue was presided over by Ambassador Humayun Kabir. Mezbah Uddin, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Charles Whiteley, Head of Delegations of the European Union (EU), among others, spoke at the event.

Death toll from sinking of Lebanon migrant boat climbs to 89

Thousands of Palestinians held prayers on a small soccer field in a refugee camp in northern Lebanon on Saturday, to mourn one of the scores of migrants who died after their boat sank off Syria’s coast this week, even as others vowed to undertake the same perilous voyage.

Abdul-Al Abdul-Al, 24, kissed his father goodbye Tuesday before boarding a crowded boat leaving from a nearby town seeking a better life in Europe. It was his 14th attempt to flee the crisis-hit Mediterranean country, this time ending with the return of his dead body. He was to be buried in the camp where he was born, his father, Omar, told The Associated Press during the funeral procession.

The head of al-Basel Hospital in Syria’s coastal city of Tartus said Saturday that the death toll has reached 89, adding that of the 20 others who were receiving treatment at the medical center, six were discharged.

The Lebanese army announced Saturday that troops have detained the man who allegedly organized the deadly trip.

The incident was the deadliest so far as a surging number of Lebanese, Syrians, and Palestinians have been trying to flee Lebanon by sea to Europe in search of jobs and stability. In Lebanon, tens of thousands have lost their jobs while the the national currency has dropped more than 90% in value, eradicating the purchasing power of thousands of families and pulling three-quarters of the population into poverty.

Alongside 1 million Syrian refugees, the small country of Lebanon is home to tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees and their descendants. Many live in the dozen refugee camps that are scattered around the country. Palestinians suffer wide discrimination in Lebanon where they are deprived from doing specific jobs or own property and since the end of the 1975-90 civil war many have migrated.

After noon prayers were held at Nahr el-Bared, hundreds of people gathered in a yard used to play football where Abdul-Al’s coffin was placed in the middle. Prayers were held before the body was carried to a nearby cemetery where thousands of people had gathered to witness the young man being laid to rest.

Omar Abdul-Al said that his son had tried to leave Lebanon before but did not succeed as sometimes the migrant boats he took had technical problems or faced high seas. Sometimes he had to swim back to shore, the man said.

“We don’t want to live here anymore. We want to leave,” said Omar Abdul-Al, adding that he encouraged his late son to leave and now he is encouraging his four other sons to leave Lebanon. He added that his sons are all well educated but they cannot find jobs.

“We are passing through a severe crisis. There is no medication or bread or anything,” the father said. He added that many other Palestinians were planning to go on the boat but it did not fit more people.

Another relative of Abdul-Al screamed that “there is a disaster in Nahr el-Bared” saying that there are about 30 people missing from the camp who were on the boat. He said people are selling their homes and cars in order to go.

Several others have been buried since Friday.

There were conflicting reports on how many people were on board the boat when it sank, with some saying at least 120. Details about the ship, such as its size and capacity, were also not clear.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the Lebanese army said troops stormed Friday the homes of several suspected smugglers, detaining eight people involved in trafficking people abroad.

Residents in northern Lebanon say that people pay about $6,000 for an adult and $3,000 for a child to reach Europe.

At the morgue, Omar Abdel-Al said he found his son’s body “intact” though it was difficult to identify many of the dozens of other corpses kept there.

“Anyone that comes with a boat, people are ready to go,” he said.

“RAB freed Sundarbans from robbers and inspired a quality film”

Outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has said that “Operation Sundarbans” is winning over audiences since its release on Friday.

“Despite being a two hours and 21 minutes long film, it has managed to keep the audience invested. The film is receiving positive reactions from moviegoers as it’s packed with action, adventure and suspense. VFX, sound quality, actors’ performances – altogether ‘Operation Sundarbans’ scores high,” the IGP said.

Benazir Ahmed said this after watching “Operation Sundarbans” at Star Cineplex, Bashundhara City mall on Friday afternoon.

“Our RAB troops and officers have also done a great job. In a number of ways, scenes of the operation have been highlighted. After watching the movie, audiences will better understand our officers’ acumen and efficiency,” he commented.

Referring to the story of “Operation Sundarbans”, Benazir Ahmed said that RAB started the operation with the aim of restoring peace in the Sundarbans, known as a sanctuary for robbers. “Peace and security were ensured in the Sundarbans through the skillful and smart operation of the officers and troops. We planned to present that success story to the nation through ‘Operation Sundarbans’,” he said.

“However, it is not possible to highlight the success of RAB with just one film, and I think this film partly shows RAB’s many successes. After planning to make the film, I asked filmmaker Dipankar Dipon to go to the Sundarbans, stay there, talk to locals including the bhawali, honey collectors, fishermen and write the script. Dipan followed the instructions.”

“The Sundarbans was a sanctuary for robbers for nearly 40 years after independence. RAB has been able to free the Sundarbans from them as well as inspire a quality film,” he said.

The IGP said, “Earlier, when I worked on ‘Dhaka Attack’ with Dipan, I was the Police Commissioner. And while planning ‘Operation Sundarbans’, I was the DG of RAB. At the time of the film’s release, I am serving as the IGP.”

Rab’s Legal and Media Wing Director, Commander Khandaker Al Moin; RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Deputy Director, Major Raisul Azam; producer Arun Chowdhury; Chayanika Chowdhury, actress Tanjika, filmmaker SA Haque Olike, actress and director Hriday Haque, Raihan Rafi and artists of “Operation Sundarbans” were also present on the occasion.

Three footballers of SAFF Women’s Champions team get compensation

Mahfuza Akhter Kiron, Chairman of the BFF Women’s Football committee and FIFA Council member, today (Saturday) compensated the three footballers of the SAFF Women’s Champions team who lost money on their arrival from Kathmandu to Dhaka on Thursday.

After getting a grand reception at the airport and joining the parade in the open-deck double-decker bus from the airport to the BFF office in Motijheel, three Bangladeshi footballers—Krishna Rani Sarkar, Shamsun Nahar Sr., and Sanjida Akhter—found their money stolen from their luggage.

Their bags were found unlocked and some of their dollars missing. Krishna lost US dollars 900 and cash Tk 50,000, which included a part of Sanjinda, while Shamsunahar lost 400 US dollars, who saved it for buying an iPhone and others.

It was not clear where the money was lost. Mahfuza Akhter Kiron reimbursed the players with money from her personal fund, not from the BFF fund. What is Colombia’s “dinosaur of peace”?

A sauropod dinosaur was named a new species around 80 years after it was first discovered in a remote Colombian mountain range, thanks to the 2016 Peace Agreement, which put an end to half a century of civil war.

Around 175 million years ago, a 12-metre long sauropod walked northern Colombia.

Scientists are attributing the discovery of this new species of herbivorous dinosaur to the improved security situation in Colombia since the signing of the 2016 peace deal.

Two years after the signing of the agreement, a group of researchers from the Universidad del Norte, Barranquilla, and the University of Michigan, US, found it safe to visit the Serranía del Perijá, and gather new data.

The scientists returned to the place where a fossil of a dinosaur dorsal spine vertebra was found by a geologist working for an oil company in 1943. At the time no one knew that it was part of a brand-new species. After the find, the fossil was taken, along with some sediment samples, to the US and given to the University of California scientific collection at Berkeley.

“Without the security conditions provided in the area today, it would have been difficult to return to the field. This is due to the peace agreement,” Aldo Rincón Burbano, professor at the Department of Physics and Geosciences at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla and one of the research leaders in Colombia, told UN News.

Former FARC-EP fighters provided logistical services, lodging, and guides for the researchers, as they tried to locate the site where the fossil had been unearthed some 80 years earlier.

“We spent almost a year in the process, writing and searching, and although we didn’t find any new fossils, we managed to get to the site and find the same sediment collected alongside the vertebra in 1943,” said Rincón. “By studying the sediment, we were able to conclude that the vertebra was from a new genus and a new species.”

They named the species Perijasaurus lapaz – the first part after the place where it was found and the second as a tribute to the peace agreement.

The dinosaur is similar to other sauropods of this period found in Asia, North Africa, and southern Patagonia, which were smaller than the later dinosaurs belonging to this group.
