‘Bangladesh ahead of everyone in Asia in protecting the last of vultures’

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has said Bangladesh is ahead of all Asian countries in doing what it takes to protect vultures, iconic birds of prey that are facing a countdown clock to extinction.

Vultures are highly skilled scavengers and often descend on a single carcass. However, their “impressive ability” to locate their meal also means that a single poisoned carcass can kill multiple birds, and “poisoning is the main reason for the group’s catastrophic decline.”

The government banned the use of diclofenac, a pain reliever administered to cattle, in 2010. Vultures feeding on cattle carcasses used to die extremely painful deaths as the drug entered their system.

Drugs such as nimesulide, aceclofenac and ketoprofen, which were meant to be alternatives to diclofenac, can also cause problems to the birds.

So, the government banned the use of ketoprofen.

“After that, the use of the safer drugs meloxicam and tolfamenic acid started to increase, a big step in the protection of vultures,” Shahab said.

The minister was speaking at a discussion on International Vulture Awareness Day 2022 in Dhaka Saturday.

Shahab said the formation of the Bangladesh National Vulture Conservation Committee, the official declaration of two vulture safe zones and the ten-year (2016-2025) Bangladesh Vulture Conservation Action Plan are serving as a long-term framework for protecting Bangladesh’s vultures.

Indonesia hikes fuel prices by 30%, cuts energy subsidies

Fuel prices increased by about 30% across Indonesia on Saturday after the government reduced some of the costly subsidies that have kept inflation in Southeast Asia’s largest economy among the world’s lowest.

Indonesians have been fretting for weeks about a looming increase in the price of subsidized Pertalite RON-90 gasoline sold by Pertamina, the state-owned oil and gas company. Long lines of motorbikes and cars snaked around gas stations as motorists waited for hours to fill up their tanks with cheaper gas before the increase took effect on Saturday.

The hike — the first in eight years — raised the price of gasoline from about 51 cents to 67 cents per liter and diesel fuel from 35 cents to 46 cents.

President Joko Widodo said the decision to increase the fuel prices was his last option as the country’s energy subsidy had tripled this year to 502 trillion rupiah ($34 billion) from its original budget, triggered by rising global prices of oil and gas.

“The government has tried its best as I really want fuel prices to remain affordable,” Widodo told a televised address announcing the fuel hike. “The government has to make decisions in difficult situations.”

He said that the flow of subsidies to the public was not well targeted — about 70% of subsidies were benefiting middle and upper classes — and the government decided instead to increase social assistance.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said authorities were monitoring the impact on inflation and economic growth of the rise in fuel price.

Inflation has been relatively modest with the shock being mostly absorbed through a budget bolstered by energy subsidies. Inflation hit 4.6% in August as Bank Indonesia, the central bank, has said it would reassess the inflation outlook in response to the government fuel price policy.

Indrawati said in a separate news conference that the government would provide 150,000 rupiah ($10) cash handouts to cushion the impact of the fuel price increase on 20.6 million poor families until the year end. The total cost of the handouts will be 12.4 trillion rupiah, which will be reallocated from the budget for energy subsidies.

She said the government will also spend 9.6 trillion rupiah ($644 million) on salary assistance to about 16 million low paid workers, and 2.17 trillion rupiah ($145 million) will go to subsidizing transport costs, particularly for motorcycle taxi drivers and fishermen.

“We hope this can reduce pressure of rising prices and help reduce poverty,” Indrawati said.

The government has subsidized fuel for decades in Indonesia, the vast archipelago nation of more than 270 million people.

Fuel prices are a politically sensitive issue that could trigger other price hikes and risk student protests. In 1998, an increase in prices sparked riots that helped topple longtime dictator Suharto.

CEPA to be win-win for both countries: IBCCI President

President of India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) Abdul Matlub Ahmad has said the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), now under discussion, will be a win-win for both the countries.

“It’ll benefit both sides,” he told UNB on Saturday, adding that such a framework agreement will help boost trade further. Bangladesh and India want to begin the required negotiations for signing the CEPA.

The issue will further be discussed during the state visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to New Delhi this week.

Representatives from the business bodies of Bangladesh will also accompany the Prime Minister during the visit.

Bangladesh and India recognized the “immense potential” of bilateral economic and commercial ties.

During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Bangladesh from March 26 to 27 last year, both sides discussed the prospects of entering into a CEPA.

“Tea industry earns foreign exchange, it must not be harmed”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today (September 3, 2022) asked all to remain vigilant so that the local tea industry is not harmed.

“Our tea industry is crucial for us, it is a foreign exchange earning crop. So this industry must not be harmed; it must flourish,” she said.

The Prime Minister said this while exchanging views with tea workers from Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sylhet and Chattogram areas through video conference from her official residence Ganabhaban.

She said that the Awami League government has always worked for betterment of the tea workers and to expand the tea estates.

She mentioned that the area and character of tea workers are different compared to other workers.

In this connection she said that tea workers did not have citizenship of the country.

She said that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave them citizenship when he was the Industries Minister in 1954.

“Because of that, I think we have some added responsibilities towards you. We have always tried to address your problems,” she said.

The Prime Minister said that a few days back when the tea workers raised demands to increase their wages, she held meeting with owners of tea estates and set the daily wages and other facilities for the tea workers.

She said that the government has taken measures so that the owners ensure their dignity and look after the tea workers.

The Prime Minister briefly described initiatives of overall development of the country and said that the government has taken steps to ensure homes for every person in the country.

She said that due to the coronavirus pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war, prices of essentials have seen significant increase.

“The wave of that blow reached Bangladesh, and we are trying to provide food for people at fair prices, so that they can sustain their families with the income,” she said.

Later, she patiently listened to the tea workers who spoke from the four districts.

Recently, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed tea estate owners to raise the daily wage of tea workers to Tk 170 from Tk 120 after holding a meeting with them following the demands of the tea workers.

The workers’ other benefits, including plucking bonus (benefit for plucking additional tea leaves), festival bonus, earned leave and sick leave allowances, provident fund, ration card and retirement facilities will also be increased proportionately.

Don’t sign off on Kushiara before Teesta: Farakka Committee

The International Farakka Committee (IFC) has urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to pursue Teesta water sharing and renewal of Ganges treaty earnestly with guarantees and arbitration clauses during her upcoming talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a statement issued on Saturday, IFC, which campaigns for Bangladesh’s fair share of water from the trans-boundary rivers with India, said that the Kushiara River’s water sharing is not a priority for Bangladesh, and its inclusion in JRC talks indicates the eagerness of the Indian side to divert attention from the Teesta issue.

Before signing the proposed MOU on the Kushiara, Bangladesh should ask for the long-awaited treaty on the Teesta to be signed, they said.

IFC leaders said since abandoning the Tipaimukh Dam project at the instance of India’s central Forest Advisory Committee for over half a decade, India has refrained from any interventions on the Barak river system from where two tributaries, the Surma and the Kushiara, flow into the Meghna in Bangladesh.

Out of 54 common rivers that flow into Bangladesh from India, 52 have already been embanked.

Intervention on the Kushiara would adversely affect Bangladesh’s third largest river, the Meghna, and the haors of the greater Sylhet area, the IFC said as a note of caution.

For Bangladesh, the most burning issue is Teesta water which has been entirely diverted from the Gazal Doba barrage in West Bengal for about two decades, rendering the Bangladesh part of the river completely dry in violation of international law and practice, with adverse environmental consequences for 3 crore Bangladeshis living in its basin.

The 30-year Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which will end in 2026, on the other hand has not ensured the availability of adequate water to Bangladesh. The treaty needs to be updated with guarantees and arbitration clauses that India has in its water treaties with Nepal and Pakistan, the IFC leaders said.

They said Bangladesh should pursue integrated basin-wide management of common rivers to keep the natural systems alive instead of artificially dividing those at man-made political borders. When dams and embankments on rivers are being demolished in the rest of the world, these cannot be built afresh on our common rivers.

The signatories to the statement are: Atiqur Rahman Salu, Chairman and Sayed Tipu Sultan, Secretary General, IFC New York, Prof. Jasim Uddin Ahmad, President, Dr. SI Khan, Senior Vice President, Syed Erfanul Bari, IFC Bangladesh; and Mostafa Kamal Majumder, Convener IFC.

Fuel leak ruins NASA’s 2nd shot at launching moon rocket

NASA’s new moon rocket sprang another dangerous fuel leak Saturday, forcing launch controllers to call off their second attempt to send a crew capsule into lunar orbit with test dummies.

The first attempt earlier in the week was also marred by escaping hydrogen, but those leaks were elsewhere on the 322-foot (98-meter) rocket, the most powerful ever built by NASA.

Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson and her team tried to plug Saturday’s leak the way they did the last time: stopping and restarting the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen in hopes of removing the gap around a seal in the supply line. They tried that twice, in fact, and also flushed helium through the line. But the leak persisted.

Blackwell-Thompson finally halted the countdown after three to four hours of futile effort.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s new moon rocket sprang another hazardous leak Saturday, as the launch team began fueling it for liftoff on a test flight that must go well before astronauts climb aboard.

For the second time this week, the launch team began loading nearly 1 million gallons of fuel into the 322-foot (98-meter) rocket, the most powerful ever built by NASA. Monday’s attempt was halted by a bad engine sensor and leaking fuel.

As the sun rose, an over-pressure alarm sounded and the tanking operation was briefly halted, but no damage occurred and the effort resumed. But minutes later, hydrogen fuel began leaking from the engine section at the bottom of the rocket. NASA halted the operation, while engineers scrambled to plug what was believed to be a gap around a seal in the supply line.

The countdown clocks continued ticking toward an afternoon liftoff; NASA had two hours Saturday to get the rocket off.

NASA wants to send the crew capsule atop the rocket around the moon, pushing it to the limit before astronauts get on the next flight. If the five-week demo with test dummies succeeds, astronauts could fly around the moon in 2024 and land on it in 2025. People last walked on the moon 50 years ago.

Forecasters expected generally favorable weather at Kennedy Space Center, especially toward the end of the two-hour afternoon launch window.

On Monday, hydrogen fuel escaped from elsewhere in the rocket. Technicians tightened up the fittings over the past week, but launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson stressed that she wouldn’t know whether everything was tight until Saturday’s fueling.

Even more of a problem on Monday, a sensor indicated one of the rocket’s four engines was too warm, but engineers later verified it actually was cold enough. The launch team planned to ignore the faulty sensor this time around and rely on other instruments to ensure each main engine was properly chilled.

Before igniting, the main engines need to be as frigid as the liquid hydrogen fuel flowing into them at minus-420 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-250 degrees Celsius). If not, the resulting damage could lead to an abrupt engine shutdown and aborted flight.

Mission managers accepted the additional risk posed by the engine issue as well as a separate problem: cracks in the rocket’s insulating foam. But they acknowledged other problems — like fuel leaks — could prompt yet another delay.

That didn’t stop thousands from jamming the coast to see the Space Launch System rocket soar. Local authorities expected massive crowds because of the long Labor Day holiday weekend.

The $4.1 billion test flight is the first step in NASA’s Artemis program of renewed lunar exploration, named after the twin sister of Apollo in Greek mythology.

Twelve astronauts walked on the moon during NASA’s Apollo program, the last time in 1972.

Artemis — years behind schedule and billions over budget — aims to establish a sustained human presence on the moon, with crews eventually spending weeks at a time there. It’s considered a training ground for Mars.

Jadeja out of Asia Cup for India with knee injury

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the remainder of the Asia Cup because of a knee injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said Friday.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel will replace Jadeja, who played a crucial role in India’s five-wicket victory over archrival Pakistan with a knock of 35 off 29 balls.

The BCCI didn’t reveal when Jadeja injured his right knee but said he’s “currently under the supervision of (the) BCCI medical team” in the United Arab Emirates.

India has already qualified for the Super 4 stage of the tournament and will face either Pakistan or Hong Kong on Sunday. Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have also reached the next round.

Asia Cup 2022: Super 4 fixtures, favourites to advance to the final

After a thrilling group phase in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022, four teams have secured a place in the Super Four round. The teams that have qualified for the next round are: India, Pakistan from group A and Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka from group B. The complete fixtures of the Super four phase and which teams are in the best shape to advance to the championship match are discussed in this article.

The Complete Super Four Fixtures for the Asia Cup 2022

The organizer didn’t include any days off after the group stage when making the tournament schedule. Therefore, the thrilling Super Four phase of the Asia Cup 2022 is scheduled to begin on Saturday (September 3). Every Super Four game will start at 8 p.m. (Bangladesh Standard Time).

India finished first in group A after winning both of their fixtures against Pakistan and Hong Kong, respectively. Pakistan finished second in group A with a thumping 155-run victory over Hong Kong in Sharjah on Friday (September 2).

In group B, Afghanistan finished top with two dominating victories over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, respectively. Sri Lanka managed to finish second in the group with a 2-wicket win over Bangladesh on Thursday in Dubai.

Who are the favourites to reach the 2022 Asia Cup cricket final?

The Afghanistan national men’s T20 cricket team has shown real promise in the ongoing event by overcoming Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in their group B fixtures. India, on the other hand, breezed through their group A matches. Let’s take a look at which teams have the best chance to secure a place in the final.

India

India is the best team in the tournament given their overall strength in the squad. The team is in the best shape at the moment, especially after two satisfying performances. The Indian Twenty20 reserve side is as strong as the main team. Besides, they have a firm T20 head-to-head record over their next round opponents. India will likely dominate the Super four round fixtures in their quest for a final berth.

India’s H2H records (T20I) over Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan (as on September 3, 2022)

Pakistan

Pakistan’s group stage match against India was a tight one, which they lost by 5 wickets in the final over. However, Pakistan made a strong comeback in their second fixture of the tournament against Hong Kong. They beat the Hong Kong side by 155 runs, which is the second biggest margin of victory among the ICC full members. Pakistan’s performance in the Super Four round is expected to be even better. They will be second favourites to qualify for the final.

Afghanistan

The Afghan side has stunned everyone with their commanding display in the competition. The team seems to have the right balance to upset big teams on any given day. Afghanistan’s bowling department is one of the best in the world. It’s not just their spinners who have put the opposition under pressure; their fast bowlers are equally up to the task at the moment.

Their batters are aggressive in nature. They have the ability to shift gears at any moment of the game, as witnessed in the contest against Bangladesh. If any team other than India and Pakistan deserves to play the final, it would be Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan team fought hard against a wounded Bangladesh side to secure their place in the next round. This Lankan T20 side is young and inexperienced, so playing against stronger opponents will be a valuable learning experience for them. Sri Lanka’s primary aim will be to beat Afghanistan in the Super Four phase. Besides, they will try to upset India and Pakistan, but given their current form, it would be a hard task.

Verdict

As per Super 4 fixtures of the Asia Cup 2022, Sharjah Cricket Ground will host two matches in this phase, while Dubai will host the remaining matches, including the final on September 11. This round will begin with a match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan on Saturday. India and Pakistan will start the Super Four phase as favourites to qualify for the championship match. However, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will not give the two Asian heavyweights an easy time without putting up a good fight.

Zimbabwe register historic win vs Australia

Riding on the five-wicket haul of leg spinner Ryan Burl, which is also his career-best bowling in ODIs, Zimbabwe beat Australia by three wickets on Saturday in the third one-day cricket international.

It was Zimbabwe’s first ODI victory over Australia in Australia — 30 years after the team’s first appearance Down Under.

Australia won the first two matches by five and eight wickets, respectively, after winning the toss and sending Zimbabwe in to bat.

But Zimbabwe captain Regis Chakabva won the coin flip on Saturday and the story was a much different one as the visitors took three wickets inside the first 10 overs and bowled Australia out for 141 runs.

In reply, Zimbabwe reached its victory target with 66 balls to spare. Chakabva top-scored with 37 runs and Tadiwanashe Marumani added 35 on its way to a winning total of 142-7.

Josh Hazlewood led the Australian bowlers with three wickets. Burl was named man of the match.

“Coming into the last game, there’s always the thought of going through the motions,” Chakabva said. “But it was a brilliant morning from the bowlers, they showed a lot of fight and to get them out for that total is a testament to their fight. We head home now, some fitness for the first week and then training before we come back for the T20 World Cup.”

Veteran Australian opener David Warner came within just six runs of ending his century drought. Warner hit 94 off 96 balls to add a degree of respectability to the total.

Left-arm seamer Richard Ngarava got skipper Aaron Finch for the third time in three ODIs. From the other end, Victor Nyauchi trapped Steve Smith leg before for one, the Australian unable to get the call reversed in a review.

Alex Carey was next to fall, caught behind after an erratic shot that left Australia 31-3 off nine overs. Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green swiftly followed as Warner kept the scoreboard ticking from the other end.

Warner’s pull shot shortly after was gathered on the boundary to deprive him of a much-needed century. He hit 14 fours and two sixers at a strike rate of 97.9.

It’s been 54 innings across all formats since Warner’s last century with Saturday’s total the fourth time he’s been dismissed in the 90s.

“Zimbabwe bowled very well in the morning and we can’t take anything for granted in international cricket, you can get beaten on any given day,” Australia captain Aaron Finch said. ”We had a chance with the ball but it wasn’t to be.”

The series was played in northern Queensland state as part of the International Cricket Council’s Super League competition for ODIs. Both teams are preparing for the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup which starts in Australia on Oct. 16, although Zimbabwe still needs to go through qualifying to reach the main tournament.

We have no choice but to win this time, says Fakhrul about movement

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said their party will not get defeated in any way this time as they will make their movement a success by braving all obstacles.

Speaking at a discussion, he also warned the BNP rank and file to remain alert so that the ruling party does not get any scope to put them in danger.

“We won’t be defeated by any means this time…we must win this time and we have no choice but to turn victorious. We can’t let the sacrifices of Noor-e-Alam, Abdur Rahim, Shaon Pradhan go in vain.”

Bangladesh Chhatra Forum and Uttaranchal Chhatra Forum organised the discussion at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, marking the 16th anniversary of the release of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman from jail.

Tarique, the eldest son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, was arrested on March 7, 2007 by the joint forces on different charges, including corruption, from their then cantonment residence.

After nearly 18 months of imprisonment, he went to London securing bail from the High Court in September 3, 2009. He has been staying there since then.

Fakhrul said the government is trying to suppress BNP as the party leaders and activists have started waking up across the country. “This is their target and they have started working on it.”

The BNP leader said the government attacking BNP leaders and activists in different parts of the country as they are registering protests against the increase in the prices of oil, pulses, salt and fuel.

“They (govt) are trying to take this movement to a different direction and they are trying to divert people’s attention to a different direction by repeating their acts of arson terrorism and other terror acts. The information minister yesterday (Friday) said that they would go to the outside world with pictures of BNP’s terrorist activities,” he said.

Fakhrul, however, said the global community is now not paying heed to Awami League’s propaganda against BNP. “It has already been proved through US sanctions on RAB and IGP Benazir Ahmad that their campaigns (against BNP) were not correct. That’s why we have to take every step very carefully. Let’s not fall into a new plot and give it (govt) another chance to suppress us.”

Referring to a newspaper report, Fakhrul said police inspector Kanak fired at BNP leaders and activists in Naryaanganj by ‘illegally’ collecting a Chinese Rifle though he was not authorised to use that gun.

About the Narayanganj SP’s comment that Shaon did not have involvement with BNP’s politics, Fakhrul said. “We would like to clearly say that it’s not important which party he belonged to. The important thing is that he was a worker and he was shot dead though there was no such situation there to open fire.”

He also warned his party colleagues that the police Awami League government will not give them any scope to take to the streets, but they have to do it together people by exercising the power of the people.

Recalling the political changeover during the 1/11 regime in 2007, he said there was a plot at that time to eliminate the believers in Bangladeshi nationalism and democracy. There was a lot of publicity about minus-two formula at that time. But minus two didn’t happen as it happened minus one.”
