Bhutan thanks Bangladesh’s Fair Group for training its youths

Bhutan has thanked Bangladesh’s Fair Group for providing hands-on training to its youths through an internship programme.

Bhutanese Ambassador Rinchen Kuentsyl hoped that these youths would return home and contribute to Bhutan’s socio-economic development.

Fair Group organised a month-long special internship programme for the Bhutanese youths in smartphones, consumer electronics products and automobile maintenance and servicing in response to a request from the country.

Ambassador Rinchen and Fair Group Chair Ruhul Alam AL Mahbub handed over internship certificates to eight Bhutanese youths in Dhaka Sunday.

The envoy said Bangladesh’s role in the socio-economic development of Bhutan is immense.

Ruhul Alam assured him of continued cooperation in the development of human resources in Bhutan. “Skilled trainers will be sent from Fair Group if necessary to enhance the skills of the trainers in Bhutan.”

Fair Group is producing South Korea’s Samsung smartphones and consumer electronics products at its factories in Shibpur, Narsingdi and marketing them all over Bangladesh.

The work of setting up a Fair Technology Factory at Bangabandhu Hi-Tech Park in Kaliakair, Gazipur is now nearing completion, where the group will assemble South Korea’s Hyundai SUVs and sedans.

Lots of potential to grow in beekeeping, footwear sectors: Speakers

Speakers in a seminar said Bangladesh has a lot of potential in production of honey by enhancing beekeeping activities.

They said a number of quantities of honey are imported to meet the growing demand of pure honey in the domestic markets, spending foreign currencies.

The government incentive in beekeeping will encourage the entrepreneurs of this sector which will be benefited in two ways- saving forex and creating employment, they said.

The speaker said this while speaking in a seminar on creating entrepreneurs on beekeeping and small footwear factories.

Master of economics (entrepreneurship economics) of Dhaka school of economics (DScE) organized the seminar on Monday.

Afia Akter, assistant professor of DScE and master student Faijul Siddiki gave a presentation on the topic in the program.

Prof.Dr.Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Coordinator of entrepreneurship economics was the chief guest in the program.

He said Bangladesh Economy has immense potential to upgrade through the informal sector, which needs government policy and incentive to encourage the sectors.

Prof.Abdullah Abu Sayeed Khan, chairman of journalism department, Khulna University was the special guest in the program.

Rehana Parvin, Sara Tasneem, Md.Touhidul Alam, Sadia Islam, Tonmoy Chowdhury, Shamim Ahmad Jushan Ara Mitu, Suvashish Paul faculties of DScE among others, spoke in the function.

PM: Connectivity is key to national development

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said her government has been working to improve the connectivity throughout the country for economic progress and industrialization.

“We’ve developed a communication network through construction of roads and bridges across the country. Besides, we’ve been dredging and reviving the rivers…. We’re reviving the rail services (on different routes) and constructing new rail lines,” she said.

The premier was addressing a function, arranged at her office, through a virtual platform from her official residence Ganobhaban.

In the function, 45 financial institutions donated some Tk 305 crore to the Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund for the flood-hit people. On behalf of the PM, her Principal Secretary Ahmad Kaikaus received the cheques of the donation from the top representatives of the banks.

Hasina said a strong communication network creates a huge scope for accelerating development pace, industrialization and business. “We’ve been working on this,” she said.

Talking about the recently opened Padma Multipurpose Bridge, she hoped the bridge would change the fate of the people of 21 districts.

“The vast southern region has been neglected for a long time. But the scope for industrialization has been created in this region. The economic condition of the people of this region will improve,” she said.

The PM said the bridge has created a huge scope for the marketing of local agricultural goods of the southern region and the purchasing power of the people of the region will get enhanced.

She said Bangladesh has been able to construct the Padma Bridge with its own funding as the people of the country stood with her giving courage and assistance. “The people of my country is my big strength,” she added.

Hasina put emphasis on enhancing local production of crops and goods, diversification of export items and exploration of new export markets through assessment of their demands.

She said her government has been working on the development of local market by enhancing the purchasing power of the people of Bangladesh, particularly the rural masses.

“We’ll increase the purchasing power of the people…. To accomplish the goal, we’ve been implementing all our economic programmes targeting the grassroots people,” she said.

The prime minister extended her sincere thanks to the authorities of the financial institutions for their donations saying that the assistance would play an effective role to alleviate the sufferings of the flood-hit people.

In the wake of a fresh wave of Covid-19 infection in the country, the Prime Minister renewed her call to all to maintain health safety protocols particularly wearing face masks to keep themselves safe.

Sirajganj’s flood situation improves, people’s sufferings continue

The flood situation in Sirajganj showed signs of improvement on Monday as the water level of the Jamuna River dropped.

The river was flowing 65cm below the danger mark at Sirajganj point while 57cm below the danger level at Kazipur point on Monday morning, said Nasir Uddin, sub-divisional engineer (HQ) of Sirajganj Water Development Board.

He said that the water has receded from many houses in the flood-hit areas and water may recede from most of the low-lying areas in the next two to three days.

More than 50,000 people in 38 unions of 5 upazilas on the banks of the Jamuna River were stranded due to the flood.

With flood waters receding, the miseries of the residents of the char areas in the district have increased.

Besides, 9,500 hectares of cropland have been damaged due to the flood.

The flood survivors are crying for relief. Apart from facing a food crisis, they need pure drinking water, fuel and fodder.

According to district administration sources, 84 educational institutions have been shut due to the ongoing flood, hampering the studies of the students.

As water level in the Jamuna started to fall river banks erosion has taken a serious turn in many places in the district.

However, sand-filled bags were dumped at vulnerable points to protect the area from erosion.

Besides, 184 shelters have been opened for the flood victims and 23 medical teams have been formed to provide services round-the-clock.

Mayers’ 146 powers West Indies to big lead

The West Indies started their first innings of the Lucia Test 234 runs behind Bangladesh and finished it 174 runs ahead at the Daren Sammy Stadium Sunday.

Kyle Mayers’ epic knock of 146 came to an end as he fell to Khaled Ahmed on day three. It was Khaled’s fourth wicket in the innings.

Bangladesh picked up two wickets in the first session of the day before the rain came in.

In the rain-hit first session, the West Indies added 36 runs with their overnight total of 340 for five and lost two more wickets.

The hosts had lost four wickets for 132 runs. But Mayers, Jermaine Blackwood and Joshua Da Silva stood firm to strike back and secure a first-innings lead for the hosts.

Earlier, Bangladesh scored 234 in the first innings with only a 50 from Liton Das. All of Bangladesh’s first five batters managed to have good starts, but they failed to carry on.

At the end of day two, Bangladesh’s head coach Russell Domingo had said the batters should learn from the West Indies.

The hosts won the first Test of the ongoing series, which is a part of the ICC World Test Championship.

BPL Football: Mohammedan beat Sheikh Jamal 3-1 to return to winning ways

Dhaka Mohammedan returned to winning ways in the 12-team Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Football after outplaying three times champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi 3-1 at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla Monday.

Mohammedan suffered a 2-4 defeat against their arch-rivals Dhaka Abahani in their last match at the same venue Wednesday.

In the day’s match, local midfielder Sheikh Morsalin put Mohammedan ahead in the 34th minute (1-0).

Sheikh Jamal restored parity in the 38th minute when Mohammedan’s Malian striker Souleymane Diabate scored an own goal while trying to block a dangerous shot (1-1).

However, Souleymane compensated for his mistake by scoring two goals in the 43rd and 83rd minutes, both from penalties (3-1).

Despite Monday’s win, Mohammedan remained at the sixth spot in the league table, securing 25 points from 17 matches. Sheikh Jamal remained at the fourth spot with 30 points from as many matches.

Defending champions and table topper Bashundhara Kings secured 44 points from 17 matches, nine points ahead of the second-placed Dhaka Abahani.

Six times champions Dhaka Abahani earned 35 points from 16 matches and third-placed Saif DC secured 30 points from 16 matches.

Bangladesh to participate in SAFF, AFC U-17 Football

Bangladesh Under-17 football team will participate in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) youth football championships.

The decision was made at the fourth meeting of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) Development Committee held in Dhaka with Committee Chairman and BFF Vice-President Ataur Rahman Bhuiyan (Manik) in the chair.

The SAFF U-17 Football Championship 2022 will be held in Sri Lanka during September 5-15.

The Group E matches of the AFC U-17 Championship 2023 qualifiers will be held in Dhaka during October 1-10.

The Group E teams are Yemen, Singapore, Bhutan, and hosts Bangladesh.

Raushon Ershad returns home from Thailand

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Raushon Ershad returned home from Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, on Monday after nearly seven and a half months of stay there for medical treatment.

She reached Hazrat Shahjajal International Airport around 12 noon, said her assistant private secretary Md Mamum Hasan.

Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader along with the party’s senior leaders welcomed the opposition leader at the airport.

Earlier on Sunday, GM Quader said Raushon, the chief patron of the Jatiya Party, was now doing well as her physical condition improved a lot.

Rahgir Al Mahi Saad Ershad MP (Rangpur-3) who along with his wife Mahima Ershad accompanied Raushon in Bangkok throughout her stay there said his mother is now fine, but very weak.

“She has problems in her legs and still can’t walk properly. It may take time for her to gain back her strength. She needs more physiotherapy,” he said.

Saad said Raushon will also go to Bangkok for follow-up treatment on July 4 next.

On November 5 last year, Raushon was flown to Thailand by an air ambulance as her health condition turned critical. She has been receiving treatment at Bumrungrad Hospital since then.

Earlier, Raushon Ershad, 78, underwent treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) as she fell ill seriously due to old age complications.

Flood-hit Kurigram needs comprehensive support to overcome added challenges

Floodwater in Kurigram is receding but on the way it revealed several critical problems for the vulnerable population here as thousands of people have lost the means of living a dignified life.

Plan International Bangladesh, an international development organization, emphasized the need for comprehensive support for the adversely affected population.

Josna, a young woman from Nageswari, found her house submerged in flood water which left her life in uncertainty.

“This single flood has turned our daily life upside down. Wherever I look, there’s nothing except floodwater. My family is suffering from food shortage, but there are other challenges for me too. How would I maintain my menstrual hygiene? “ said Josna.

To stand beside people like Josna, Plan International Bangladesh has distributed food and non-food items among the flood-affected families in Kachakata and Ballaberkhash unions of Nageswari Upazila of Kurigram district. The response focuses on the needs of young women and girls.

Some 5560 packets of dry food, 1,00,000 water purification tablets, 1840 Non-Food Items (NFI), and 1820 Menstrual Health Management (MHM) kits have been distributed during the first phase of the response.

Morjina, another young woman from Nageswari, shared, “As we don’t have any options to cook food receiving dry food is a great relief for us. The menstrual hygiene kits are also essential, as we cannot even share this problem with others in this crisis.”

Mahidev Jubo Somaj Kallayan Somity is supporting Plan International Bangladesh as a partner in implementing this response.

Ashik Billah, Head of Central & Northern Region of Plan International Bangladesh, Shahadat Hossain Chairman of Kachakata Union Parishad, and SM Abdur Razzak, Chairman of Ballaberkash Union Parishad, were present at the distribution point.

“From media reports, we know that around 2 lakh people in Kurigram have become homeless due to this flood. Plan International Bangladesh has been the first responder in Nageswari since the flood hit the community. However, we cannot ensure the protection of the entire community by ourselves. We all need to come forward in a joint effort”, said Ashik Billah.

“Children are getting sick due to water-borne diseases. The sufferings of pregnant women and new mothers are beyond our imagination. Strengthened health facilities have become a crying need now”, he added.

Plan International Bangladesh pledges to continue responding to this area, focusing on child protection, gender-based violence, and education along with the needs of girls and young women.

Parliamentary watchdog recommends committee to monitor flood situation

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has been asked to form a committee to monitor the country’s overall flood situation and assess the damages caused by the deluge.

The recommendation came on Monday at 25th meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the ministry at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman AB Tajul Islam in the chair.

The meeting also held an elaborate discussion on the progress of the decisions taken earlier, the recent flood situation in Sunamganj and Sylhet, the government’s step in the flood-hit areas and the future plan of the ministry to tackle river erosion.

How much relief materials have been disbursed, assessing the need of the flood-affected people to mitigate their sufferings, assessment of the damage caused by the flood and appropriate action after flood will be the main task of the proposed committee, it said.

The Parliamentary watchdog also suggested installing tube wells to ensure safe drinking water, distribution of corrugated iron sheets for building houses and schools and medicines for preventing water-borne diseases in the flood-affected areas.

It also suggested allocating flood relief to the most vulnerable flood-hit areas instead of equal disbursement.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman and other members of the parliamentary body including Panchanan Biswas, Aftab Uddin Sarkar, Mir Mostak Ahmed Robi, Jewel, Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury and Kazi Kaniz Sultana were present at the meeting.
