16 more dengue patients hospitalised in 24 hours: DGHS

Bangladesh confirmed 16 more dengue cases in 24 hours till Wednesday morning.

All the new patients were detected in Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Seventy-three dengue patients, including 69 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at different hospitals across the country.

This year, the DGHS has recorded 479 dengue cases and 406 recoveries so far. The authority has not yet reported any death from the mosquito-borne viral disease.

Dengue – a leading cause of serious illness and death in some Asian and Latin American countries – was first reported in Bangladesh in 2000 and claimed 93 lives. In three years, the fatality number almost fell to zero.

However, 105 dengue patients, including 95 in Dhaka division, died in 2021.

Dengue is found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas.

About 4 billion people, almost half of the world’s population, live in areas with a risk of dengue, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Each year, up to 400 million people get infected with dengue while approximately 100 million get sick from infection, and 40,000 die from severe dengue, it says.

Because there are four different dengue viruses, a person can be infected by the virus up to four times in their life. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, aches and pains and a rash.

“There is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue. Early detection of disease progression associated with severe dengue, and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates of severe dengue to below 1 percent,” according to the World Health Organization.

Finland eager to support Bangladesh’s sustainable development: Envoy

Finland is keen to cooperate with Bangladesh in the field of sustainable and renewable energy, said Finnish non-resident ambassador to Bangladesh Ritva Koukku-Ronde on Wednesday.

The envoy, who resides in New Delhi, said this while paying a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the latter’s official residence Ganobhaban.

PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

The envoy handed over a letter of greetings from Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin to Sheikh Hasina, marking the 50th anniversary of Finland-Bangladesh diplomatic relations.

The Bangladesh Prime Minister also conveyed her greetings to her Finnish counterpart on the occasion.

The Finnish diplomat said the cooperation between Bangladesh and Finnish multinational telecommunications company Nokia can be strengthened.

Ritva said her country will work on the Rohingya issue in the United Nations agencies.

Finland eager to support Bangladesh’s sustainable development: Envoy

In this context, Hasina said Rohingya refugees have become a big burden for the economy of Bangladesh. The local people are suffering a lot for the Rohingya people, she said.

“We don’t allow any insurgency on the Myanmar border,” she said.

The PM mentioned that her government signed the Chittagong Hill Tract Treaty in 1997 through bilateral negotiations and 1800 armed cadres surrendered their arms at that time.

Noting that Bangladesh has set up a good number of hi-tech parks, Hasina invited the Finnish companies to invest there.

As the impacts of the Ukraine-Russia war came up for discussion, the premier said, “We don’t want war. Our (foreign) policy is friendship to all and malice towards none.”

She said Bangladesh imports fertilizer but now the shipping cost has gone up significantly.

The PM said Bangladesh needs support from developed countries for its development.

She said Bangladesh continues agro research for its food security. No arable land will remain uncultivated to grow more food in the country, she said.

Honorary Consul General of Finland to Bangladesh Muhammed Aziz Khan was present during the meeting.

Mitu murder case: Record statements of Babul’s children, says HC

The High Court on Wednesday ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to record the statements of the two children of former Chattogram Police superintendent Babul Akter in his wife’s murder case.

A HC bench of justices Jahangir Hossain and Shahed Nuruddin asked the PBI to go to Magura and record the statements of the two children at the Magura District Social Service Office.

Advocate Sishir Monir appeared for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Sarwar Hossain Bappi represented the state.

On May 12, 2021, PBI detained Chattogram’s former police superintendent Babul Akter after allegedly establishing his involvement in the murder of his wife, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, in 2016. He is currently in jail.

On June 5, 2016, unidentified assailants gunned down Mitu at the port city’s GEC intersection while she was going to drop her son Mahir Akhter, 7, for a bus of Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College.

Soon after the crime, Babul had lodged a complaint with Panchlaish Police against three unidentified men.

Later, Chattogram Metropolitan Police arrested four men, including Abu Nasur Gunu, Shah Zaman alias Robin, Md Anwar and Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, from different places in connection with the murder.

Of them, Anwar and Wasim gave confessional statements before a magistrate, implicating seven people, including Musa who directly took part in the killing, Mohammad Rashed and Nabi.

During the course of the probe, police had also arrested “arms supplier” Ehteshamul Haque Bhola and his assistant Md Monir and seized a pistol from their possession.

Cops had also nabbed Musa’s elder brother Saidul Shikder Shakur and Shahjahan for providing a motorbike that was used in the murder. But on July 4, 2016, Nabi and Rashed were killed in a gunfight with police in Rangunia.

The case was transferred to the PBI in 2019, after Mitu’s father, himself a retired police officer, filed a complaint against the CMP’s mishandling of the case.

Dhaka is world’s second most polluted city

Air pollution still remains one of the top most challenges for Bangladesh — its capital has been ranked as the second most polluted city in the world.

On Wednesday, Dhaka’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 190 at 9am.

India’s Delhi and Kuwait’s Kuwait City occupied the first and third spots, with AQI scores of 257 and 158, respectively.

An AQI between 101 and 200 is considered ‘unhealthy’, particularly for sensitive groups.

Similarly, an AQI between 201 and 300 is said to be ‘poor’, while a reading of 301 to 400 is considered ‘hazardous’, posing serious health risks to residents.

AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, is used by government agencies to inform people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for them.

In Bangladesh, the AQI is based on five criteria pollutants — Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and Ozone.

Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy during winter and improves during monsoon.

A report by the Department of Environment (DoE) and the World Bank in March 2019 pointed out that the three main sources of air pollution in Dhaka “are brick kilns, fumes from vehicles and dust from construction sites”.

With the advent of winter, the city’s air quality starts deteriorating sharply due to the massive discharge of pollutant particles from construction work, rundown roads, brick kilns and other sources.

Air pollution consistently ranks among the top risk factors for death and disability worldwide. Breathing polluted air has long been recognised as increasing a person’s chances of developing a heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, lung infections and cancer, according to several studies.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, largely as a result of increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and acute respiratory infections.
