West Ham host Lyon as European run recalls memories of halcyon days

West Ham United host Lyon in the first

leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday with the Hammers’ run in

continental competition bringing back memories of the club’s halcyon days.

They have not seen a European quarter-final in the east end of London since

1981, when second-division West Ham lost to eventual winners Dinamo Tbilisi

in the last eight of the Cup Winners Cup.

Their best years came before that, with Bobby Moore captaining the team to

victory in the 1965 Cup Winners Cup and a side featuring Frank Lampard senior

reaching the final of the same tournament in 1976.

On that occasion they lost to a brilliant Anderlecht team, but returning to

another European final is now the dream, almost half a century later.

After ousting record six-time winners Sevilla in the last round, a meeting

with Lyon will hold no fears for David Moyes’s men, who are sixth in the

Premier League.

“It’s very exciting. I’ve been here a long time and seen the lows of

relegation battles to being in the quarter-final of the Europa League,” Aaron

Cresswell told the club’s website.

“That’s what we want as a club, we want progression and as players we want

to play in those competitions against the best players in the world. It’s

fantastic.”

Lyon have a fantastic recent pedigree in Europe, reaching the Champions

League semi-finals in 2020 and the last four of the Europa League in 2017.

They knocked out Porto in the last round, but it is hard to know what the

true face of Peter Bosz’s side is just now — they lie in mid-table in Ligue

1.

Lyon are missing gifted midfielder Maxence Caqueret due to injury but

anything is possible for them if the likes of Lucas Paqueta and Houssem Aouar

perform to the best of their ability.

– Resurgent Barcelona –

Whoever wins that tie — the second leg will be played next week — will

face Eintracht Frankfurt or a resurgent Barcelona in the semi-finals.

The Catalans must now be seen as the favourites to win the Europa League as

they head to Germany on a run of 13 games unbeaten.

Opponents Eintracht sit mid-table in the Bundesliga but they have beaten

Bayern Munich this season and knocked out another Spanish side in the last

round, ending the prospects of Betis reaching the final in Seville.

Germany is the only country with two teams left in the Europa League, as RB

Leipzig host Atalanta in the first leg.

Leipzig’s form since Domenico Tedesco became coach in December has been

superb and they come into this tie fresh from thumping Borussia Dortmund 4-1

at the weekend. In contrast Atalanta have slipped out of the top-four race in

Serie A.

Rangers head to Portugal to play Braga looking to bounce back after their

home loss to Celtic on Sunday dealt a potentially fatal blow to their

Scottish title hopes.

They knocked Braga out of the Europa League two years ago but Carlos

Carvalhal’s team beat Monaco in the last round and are fresh from a 3-2 win

over Benfica last weekend.

The clash between Leicester City and PSV Eindhoven is the pick of the ties

in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League.

The Foxes want more silverware after winning last season’s FA Cup but PSV

are eyeing a first continental title since lifting the European Cup in 1988.

“Leicester will be the most formidable team we have played this season,”

said PSV coach Roger Schmidt.

PSV’s fellow former European Cup winners, Feyenoord and Marseille, host

Slavia Prague and PAOK, while Roma return to Norway to renew acquaintances

with Bodo/Glimt.

Jose Mourinho’s side lost 6-1 away to the same opponents in the group

stage.

BNP doesn’t believe in independence, Liberation War spirit: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said in parliament that a BNP lawmaker’s remark on nationalisation of ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan has proved that they don’t believe in the country’s independence and the spirit of the Liberation War.

“His (BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid’s) remarks have proved that they don’t believe in independence and the spirit of the Liberation War. They have love for Pakistan (pyare Pakistan) in their minds and they like doing slavery of Pakistan,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina said this in the Jatiya Sangsad taking part in a general discussion on a motion brought to thank the Prime Minister and her cabinet colleagues for taking a “strong role” in announcing the “Joy Bangla” as the national slogan.

The House by a voice vote unanimously adopted the congratulatory motion which was placed House by lawmaker from Madaripur-2 constituency Shajahan Khan under the section-147 of the rules of procedure, following the general discussion.

The Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presided over today’s session.

Sheikh Hasina, also Leader of the House, said that after assuming power, military dictator Ziaur Rahman did the same things that the Pakistani occupation forces did during the Liberation War in 1971 when the “Joy Bangla” slogan was chanted.

They conducted various propagandas about the “Joy Bangla” slogan, she said, adding that the followers of Zia are still doing the same old things.

Today’s remarks made by BNP lawmaker Harun have again proved that they have “pyare Pakistan” in their minds, she said.

The Prime Minister thanked the people of the country as the “Joy Bangla” has got recognition and dignity as the country’s national slogan.

The motion states, “Parliament is in opinion that on behalf of the Bengali nation, sincere congratulations and thanks should be extended to Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Cabinet for their strong role in fulfilling the long-standing expectation of the nation to declare “Joy Bangla” as the national slogan through the announcement of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina.”

The Leader of the House said that her government has announced “Joy Bangla” as the national slogan in line with the country’s apex court’s directives that “Joy Bangla” should be made the national slogan of the country.

She said there is no need to give her thanks for this, adding, “I want the motion to be accepted in parliament and the spirit of the Liberation war to come back.”

The Prime Minister said the contributions of the freedom fighters to the Liberation War were erased after assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975.

“At that time, freedom fighters did not dare to give their identities as the freedom fighters. The history of the Liberation War was distorted. The four principles –nationalism, democracy, socialism and secularism — given by the Father of the Nation in the Constitution, were also distorted,” she said.

The Prime Minister said that Bangabandhu had first given the Joy Bangla slogan and asked Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni to reach the slogan to the grassroots through the Chhatra League.

In a function, she said, Bangabandhu asked Sirajul Alam Khan to chant the slogan “Joy Bangla.”

Sheikh Hasina said the Father of the Nation concluded her historic 7th march speech by chanting “Joy Bangla” and since then the slogan was made the slogan of the Liberation War and it immensely inspired the freedom fighters to join the war against the Pakistani occupation forces.

The Prime Minister said Ziaur Rahman had destroyed the spirit of the Liberation War and the Joy Bangla slogan, erased the name of the Father of the Nation and banned the historic 7th March speech of Bangabandhu which has now got international recognition.

“I will tell everyone that Bangladesh will march ahead with the spirit of the Liberation War and none can push the country behind anymore,” she said.

Ziaur Rahman was directly linked to the killing of Bangabandhu, the Prime Minister said, referring to the interview of Bangabandhu’s killers, removed Col Faruk and Col Rashid, with the BBC and the court proceedings.

“Why Mustaq made Ziaur Rahman the army chief immediately after assassination of the Father of the Nation if he was not directly involved with the killing,” she questioned.

The Prime Minister said she failed to incorporate the name of Ziaur Rahman in the Bangabandhu killing case as he had died before.

Awami League lawmakers Amir Hossain Amu (Jhalokathi-2), AKM Mozammel Haque (Gazipur -1), Matia Chowdhury (Sherpur-2), Dr Muhammad Adur Razzaque (Tangail-1), Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim (Gopalganj-2), Engineer Mosharraf Hossain (Chattogram-1), Major (Retd) Rafiqul Islam, Bir Uttam (Chandpur-5), Anisul Huq (Brahmanbaria-4), Shajahan Khan (Madaripur-2), Mostafizur Rahman (Dinajpur-5), Muhammad Faruk Khan (Gopalganj-1), Abdus Shahid (Maulvibazar-4) and Waseqa Ayesha Khan (Women Seat-7), Jatiya Party MPs Kazi Firoz Rashid (Dhaka-6), Mashiur Rahman Ranga (Rangpur-1) and Pir Fazlur Rahman (Sunamganj-4), BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid (Chapainawabganj-3), Bangladesh Workers Party MP Rashed Khan Menon (Dhaka-8) and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal MP Hasanul Haq Inu (Kushtia-2) participated in the discussion.

BNP becomes aimless, failed political party: Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said as the BNP never takes any political programme for the welfare of the country’s people, it has now become an aimless, ineffective and failed political party.

“People do not support any statement of BNP. The actual aim of the BNP is to seize power illegally by means. The politics of grabbing power is more important to the BNP than the welfare of the country’s people,” he said in a statement.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said the country’s people are now tired of hearing the unrealistic statements and falsehood of BNP leaders, including BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Without upholding the democratic norms, the BNP leaders want to implement a far-sighted political agenda only through their lip-service, he said.

The AL general secretary said Mirza Fakhrul is trying to exhort the nation today by talking about autocracy but BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, who seized the state power illegally, was the father of dictatorship in Bangladesh.

Dictator Ziaur Rahman patronised the killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the four national leaders, he said, adding that Zia established the anti-liberation forces – razakar-al-badr and war criminals in the politics of independent Bangladesh.

Quader said Zia had formed a political party named BNP involving the party-less and depraved leaders in exchange for money.

The word of autocracy does not suit in the mouths of those who established military rule by killing the country’s constitution and democracy, he said.

The road transport minister said the BNP is the symbol of autocracy and the main patron of killers, war criminals, corruption, terrorism and militancy.

The BNP’s history is the history of autocracy, grabbing power illegally, killing-coup-conspiracy, patronising war criminals and grenade attack, militancy and terrorism, corruption and the establishing the reign of terror, he said.

Quader said the AL traditionally practices politics following democratic norms and ideology, while the main aim of the AL and its President Sheikh Hasina is the welfare of the country’s people.

The AL never believes in carrying out oppression on opposite thoughts, he said, but thousands of AL men were repressed and killed by the BNP-Jamaat people.

The AL general secretary said that whenever the BNP assumed power, it ran the steamrollers of oppression on oppositions and wanted to eliminate those.

Following the footsteps of military dictator Ziaur Rahman, the BNP, led by Khaleda Zia, set a horrific instance by conducting torture and oppression on the AL leaders and activists and minorities during its regimes – 1991-96 and 2001-06, he said.

Young voters blase on Brazil’s elections

Not only is this the year Brazilian

teenager Rodrigo Kutz turns old enough to vote, the almost-16-year-old gets

to cast his first ballot in a clutch presidential election.

Only thing is, he couldn’t care less — like a lot of young Brazilians,

who could make up a key voter demographic in the October contest… if only

they were interested.

A deeply divided Brazil is heading for a clash of the titans in six

months’ time, likely to face a stark choice between polar opposites: far-

right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and his nemesis, leftist ex-president Luiz

Inacio Lula da Silva.

But “I don’t like either of them,” says Kutz, a high school student in the

capital, Brasilia.

“Maybe a younger candidate would make more sense to me. I hope there will

be other options next time around.”

Brazil is one of just nine countries where 16-year-olds have the right to

vote in national elections.

They also have the right not to. Voting is mandatory in Brazil, but only

for 18-and-ups.

With a month to go for voters to register, 16- and 17-year-olds look set

to participate at the lowest rate in 30 years.

Just 850,000 have registered so far, down 60 percent in a decade.

At the last elections, in 2018, 1.4 million voters from the youngest

demographic turned out.

“My parents have been telling me I should vote, but I’m not really into

politics,” says Eduardo Proenca, 16.

“I just see politicians fighting over which one’s the least awful. It

doesn’t really inspire me.”

– Neglected demographic –

There is not much that is youthful or new about the 2022 race, which looks

set to pit the 67-year-old who has led Brazil for the past four years against

the 76-year-old who led the country from 2003 to 2010.

But figures ranging from pop superstar Anitta to the electoral authorities

themselves are trying to get young voters more involved.

“You wanna ask me for a picture when you meet me someplace? If you’re over

16, I’ll only take a picture if you’ve got one of your voter registration

card,” Anitta, a vocal Bolsonaro critic, tweeted recently.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal has meanwhile launched a social media

campaign with a diverse crowd of hip young models telling teens, “Bora votar”

— slang for “Let’s go vote.”

“Young people need to get involved to decide our future,” the tribunal’s

top judge, Edson Fachin, told AFP by email.

“The worst vote is the one that doesn’t get cast.”

But the cheerleaders of democracy are up against the apathy of young

voters alienated by years of seemingly bottomless corruption scandals and a

pandemic-battered economy that has left them out, said political scientist

Marco Antonio Teixeira of the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

In 2020, at the height of the crisis, some 30 percent of Brazilian youths

were neither employed nor in school.

Brazilian political parties have also done a bad job involving the next

generation, Teixeira said.

“They’re very hierarchical spaces dominated by the leadership and

traditional political families. They’re completely passive when it comes to

young people,” he said.

– ‘Extremist views’ –

Eighteen-year-old Marco Antonio May will have to vote under Brazilian law

— but doesn’t want to.

“If it were up to me, I wouldn’t go,” he says.

“I don’t see politicians worrying much about us (young people). Brazil has

two dominant candidates who usually have extremist views on everything, and I

just find that uninspiring.”

The two front-runners have been trying to reach out to young voters,

especially Bolsonaro.

The president called on “parents and grandparents” to help get teens out

to vote against Lula, urging them to explain to kids “where Brazil was going”

when it was governed by the ex-steelworker and his hand-picked successor,

Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016) — a period that ended with Brazil’s economic boom

going catastrophically bust amid a tsunami of corruption scandals.

But Bolsonaro is trailing in the polls, and fares even worse among young

voters.

Lula leads him by 29 percentage points among 16- to 24-year-olds,

according to a recent poll from the Datafolha institute, which put the gap

between the candidates at 17 percentage points for the electorate as a whole.

Tiger eyes comeback trail blazed by legendary Hogan

As Tiger Woods prepares

to make an amazing comeback from severe leg injuries suffered in a car crash

14 months ago, he has the legend of Ben Hogan to serve as inspiration.

The 15-time major winner, chasing a record-tying sixth green jacket, said

he could not have attempted his astonishing comeback in the era of Hogan, who

won six of his nine major titles after a 1949 automobile accident.

“The treatments have gotten so much better and I’m very thankful for

that,” Woods said Tuesday, when he confirmed he planned to tee it up in the

86th Masters.

“Because if I had to go through with my accident, given what had happened

to me, during his era, I wouldn’t be playing this week, that’s for sure.”

Woods suffered major damage to his right leg in a February 2021 auto

accident in Southern California, spending weeks hospitalized and months

unable to walk.

“The leg was pretty messed up,” Woods said in December. “I’m happy it’s

still attached.”

Woods has Hogan’s comeback to serve as an example, with 70 years of

advancements to help as well.

“What he went through — obviously, he didn’t have the technology that we

have now,” Woods said.

“The amount of hot tubs that he would have to take pre-round, post-round,

in the middle of the night, just to be able to get up and swing a club the

next day, I certainly appreciate that,” added Woods, who said his open

preparation for and recovery from play is time consuming enough.

Hogan, who died in 1997 at age 84 only three months after Woods won his

first major title at Augusta National, was involved in a February 1949 car

crash at age 36 and made a stunning recovery.

Hogan suffered a broken left ankle, a fractured collarbone, a double-

fractured pelvis and a chipped rib in when his car was struck head-on by a

bus. He developed blood clots that jeopardized his life and led to life-long

circulatory complications.

Doctors said Hogan might never walk again much less play golf, but he

returned to start the 1950 PGA season, won his second US Open crown only five

months later and captured six major titles after the accident — including

the 1953 Masters and US and British Opens.

After the accident, Hogan struggled to walk courses but managed to rise to

a share of fourth on the all-time major win list led by Jack Nicklaus’s 18,

followed by Woods and Walter Hagen with 11.

Hogan, who won his first major at the 1947 PGA Championship at the age of

34, also joined the select few to win the career Grand Slam, capturing each

of the four majors at least once, a feat only matched by Woods, Nicklaus,

Gary Player and Gene Sarazen.

Woods already appreciated Hogan’s achievements when he was making his own

injury fightback from spinal fusion surgery at the 2018 Masters, a year

before winning the event.

“As far as greatest comebacks, I think one of the greatest comebacks in

all of sport is the gentleman who won here, Mr. Hogan,” Woods said in 2018.

“He got hit by a bus and came back and won major championships.

– ‘Dark, dark times’ –

That comment came as Woods was battling back from spinal fusion, a last-

chance operation after fearing he might not be able to live a normal life due

to nagging back pain.

“The pain of just sitting there and the amount of times that I’ve fallen

because my leg didn’t work or I just had to lay on the ground for extended

periods of times, those are some really dark, dark times,” Woods said in

2018.

Woods put the contrast of the situations in perspective last December.

“When I had my back fusion, I didn’t know if I could ever be out here

again,” he said. “This was a totally different deal. This was whether or not

I would have a prosthetic or not, and I don’t. So I’m very lucky.”

Bangladesh will face no economic crisis, PM assures JS

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today told the parliament that there is no possibility of economic crisis like that in Sri Lanka as the economic base of Bangladesh is very strong.

“We’re very much aware,” she said as Deputy Opposition leader GM Quader apprehended a Sri Lanka-like situation while delivering his speech in parliament.

The Prime Minister responded to this point while giving the valedictory speech of the 17th session in the 11th parliament with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

She said her government used to repay the debt taken for the country’s development purpose in due time since the Awami League assumed office.

“Bangladesh is a country in the world which was never a defaulter in paying debts and will not be defaulter in the days to come as our economic base is so strong in this respect,” she said.

The Prime Minister said that her government doesn’t take commissions like the BNP and Jatiya Party governments as they pocketed Taka 10 after purchasing an item spending Tk 20.

She said her government, in most of the cases, has completed the works of projects in due time or prior to the scheduled time, referring to completion of the 1320 MW Payra Thermal Plant within eight months of starting its works and thus saving Tk 800 crore.

Sheikh Hasina, also Leader of the House told the parliament that the people are now suffering for massive development works such as metro rail construction which is for limited time, saying, “Once the construction of the metro rail is completed, 60,000 people can go to Bangladesh Bank in Motijheel from Uttara within a short time.”

Speaking about the gas crisis, the Prime Minister said the operation of six gas wells had to be closed for temporary basis as sands were found in those, adding that four wells have already been repaired and started functioning while remaining two are under the process of repairing.

The Prime Minister said the prices of construction materials such as rods and cements have been increased in Bangladesh and elsewhere of the globe due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

So, the expenses of the development works need to adjust to the current price, otherwise, the work will be stopped, she said referring to closure of many factories even in the USA.

About the price hike of essentials, the Prime Minister said if you go through the international media you will find that the prices of essentials have increased all over the world.

The prices of oil have increased to 4 US dollar from one dollar alongside increasing prices of the daily essentials while Euro has also experienced the same and the rent of ships has also increased manifold, she said.

Inflation rate across Europe is 7.5 percent while Bangladesh has been able to contain it in six percent, she said.

The world has experienced an increasing trend of prices of essentials due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine. So, Bangladesh’s markets have to bear the brunt in wake of the war, she added.

“Despite the fact, we’re trying to control the prices of essentials,” she said, adding that the coarse varieties of rice are being sold at TK 40 while prices of fine varieties of rice have increased slightly.

Per kilogram of potato is being sold at TK 25 in retail market while TK 20 at wholesale market while the price of per kg garlic is TK 40 in retail market and TK 25 in wholesale market, she said.

The price of per kg eggplant is reduced to TK 80 from TK 110, she said, urging all to use alternative vegetables such as pumpkin, an ifter item like beguni.

Reffering to providing cards to one crore families to purchase foods at fair price alongside conducting the open market sale at fair price and giving money to the people under the social safety net programmes, she said that her government has been trying to ease the hardship of the people.

Despite the crisis arising out of the Covid-19, she said that Bangladesh has achieved 6.94 percent growth in GDP while the per capita income has increased to $2591 due to the government’s timely measures in releasing stimulus packages for all to ensure running the country’s economy and the livelihoods.

Although Bangladesh is now facing the Covid-19 pandemic, she said, “We have made our economy strong enough and this is the world’s 31st powerful economy. We want to go ahead in such a way.”

The Prime Minister requested all to maintain the traffic rules and reduce plying private cars on the roads to ease increasing traffic jam.

She said her government has taken various measures that included increasing the number of buses in large numbers, constructing metro rails and roads to ease the traffic jam.

About GM Quader’s remarks about the Constitution, the Prime Minister said it is unfortunate that they have to take lesson about the Constitution from a party which occupied the power violating the country’s constitution.

She said her government has formulated the electoral law in a bid to hold a free, fair and neutral election.

Self-reliance in seed production necessary for sustainable food security: speakers

Members of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers

and Commerce (FBCCI) standing committee on Agriculture, Agricultural

Processing and Agro-based Industries, at their first meeting, have called for

increasing local seed production to make the country’s food security

sustainable.

FBCCI President Md. Jashim Uddin addressed the meeting as the chief guest

held at the FBCCI office here today, said a press release.

He said food security is one of the most important issues for any country.

The country’s Agro-production kept its economy at a relatively better

position during the Covid-19 epidemic.

The government has taken various initiatives to turn agro-based industries

into export-oriented industries. Therefore, the FBCCI chief urged the private

sector entrepreneurs to come forward to invest in this sector.

He said that although Bangladeshi agricultural products are exported abroad

as there the buyers are mainly expatriate Bangladeshis.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a multinational professional services network

of firms, has been appointed to conduct research in the London market to find

out why these products are not being sold in the mainstream market.

After receiving the research data, the FBCCI president hoped that it will be

possible to further increase the export of Bangladeshi agricultural products
