Global Covid cases near 487 million

The overall number of Covid cases is fast approaching 487 million amid a rise in new infections in parts of the world.

According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 486,630,989 while the death toll from the virus reached 6,137,898 Thursday morning.

The US has recorded 80,057,295 cases so far and 979,849 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.

India’s Covid-19 tally rose to 43,023,215 on Wednesday, as 1,233 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the federal health ministry’s data.

Besides, 31 new deaths from the pandemic took the total death toll to 521,101.

Meanwhile, Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January last year, registered 29,920,604 infections as of Tuesday, while its Covid death toll rose to 659,769.

The number of people killed by the coronavirus surged by more than 40% last week, likely due to changes in how Covid-19 deaths were reported across the Americas and by newly adjusted figures from India, according to a World Health Organization report released Wednesday.

In its latest weekly report on the pandemic, the UN health agency said the number of new coronavirus cases fell everywhere, including in WHO’s Western Pacific region, where they had been rising since December, reports AP.

About 10 million new Covid-19 infections and more than 45,000 deaths were reported worldwide over the past week, following a 23% drop in fatalities the week before.

WHO has said repeatedly that Covid-19 case counts are likely a vast underestimate of the coronavirus’ prevalence. The agency cautioned countries in recent weeks against dropping their comprehensive testing and other surveillance measures, saying that doing so would cripple efforts to accurately track the spread of the virus.

Situation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh logged 72 fresh Covid cases with two more deaths in 24 hours till Wednesday morning.

The fresh numbers took the country’s total caseload to 19,51,504 and the death toll to 29,122.

On Tuesday, the number of infections was lower as 69 new cases were reported.

The daily positivity rate increased a bit to 0.89 per cent from Tuesday’s 0.75 per cent after 8,050 samples were tested during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The deaths of two people — a man and a woman — were reported from Rajshahi and Khulna divisions.

Besides, the mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49 per cent.

The recovery rate rose to 96.36 per cent with the recovery of 876 more patients during the 24-hour period.

The country reported its first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year, along with 178 infections, since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March 2020.

On January 28, Bangladesh logged its previous highest daily positivity rate at 33.37 per cent reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.

Besides, the country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.

Fakhrul calls AL govt a “regime of robbers”

Describing the current government as a “regime of robbers”, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said no credible election can be held under it.

“It would be wrong to call this government a thief. It’s a regime of robbers. Wherever you look, you will only find plundering. They did the same thing in the past,” he said.

Fakhrul was addressing a biennial council of BNP’s Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila unit on Public Library premises in the district town.

He said fair and acceptable elections were never held under the Awami League government since the birth of the country.

“The same thing happened during the election under the Awami League government in 1973. “So, there can never be a fair election under an Awami League government,” the BNP leader said.

He claimed that nine people were shot dead while 7,500 people were implicated in over 700 cases centering the 2014 election.

“They themselves burnt vehicles and election offices during the last general election, but cases were filed against our leaders and workers. Their houses were raided, forcing them to leave their areas,” Fakhrul alleged.

He said the government could not suppress BNP leaders and activists by filing ‘false’ cases against them.

The BNP leader said the country’s people are going through a very tough time due to the misrule of the current regime.

“We used to call Thakurgaon a place of peace. People here love to be at peace. Before 2014, the people of this area did not see (political) cases. But BNP leaders and activists have endured huge pains and sufferings facing false cases,” Fakhrul said.

He also said many BNP leaders and activists had to hide in paddy fields at night amid bitter cold in fear of getting arrested. “They had to spend nights on trees. They did not forget that sufferings and pangs. Each such incident will be accounted (at a suitable time).”

The BNP leader called upon his party colleagues to drum up public support to create a mass upsurge to oust the AL government.

“We’ve been on a struggle for a long time and we’ve suffered a lot. But we did not give up. We will not give up. We’ll free our leader Khaleda Zia…movement is the only way left for us,” he said.
