‘Thank You PM, we are integrated back into society’, say leprosy patients

Leprosy patients, who were virtually excluded from society, thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for integrating them back into society.

“People suffering from leprosy were loathed in our country. There was hatred in the eyes of relatives, neighbors, and onlookers. Then we came to Dhaka. We were staying at platform number 8 at Kamlapur Railway Station. It was in the air that the Awami League leader was set to come. We thought if we met her, she might find a way out for us,” they said in a visual report shared by Prime Minister’s ICT Advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy from his verified Facebook account.

“As we went to meet her, a mat was spread. She came and, putting the mat aside, sat with us. We, 18 people, were given something to eat. She also ate with us. We discussed our habitat issue with us. She promised us that if she was voted to power, she would secure a shelter for us. Then when her party was elected in 1996, she started the housing project for us,” they added.

Recounting how life has changed since then, they further said, “We were trained in sewing and candle making. We were offered a loan from social welfare. We were given treatment and medication for free. Our children were blessed with education. Some of them completed their BSC and some diploma. When we were suffering from leprosy, we had no life, no society. No one cared for us, no one loved us. After coming here, we were integrated back into society. We can get in touch with other people.”

In the post, Sajeeb praised the poverty alleviation model, envisioned and realized by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, paving landless people the path for self-reliance, endowing them with shades overhead and sources of empowerment.

“So far, the government has built one house with land for about 4 lakh uprooted families on the initiative of Bangabandhu daughter Sheikh Hasina. Handing over houses to 1 lakh more families is underway,” he observed.

Shedding light on further initiatives geared towards empowering marginal people, he said, “Ensuring the housing arrangements, the government is now taking various measures for their earnings. These families are becoming prosperous by utilizing the facilities of the developmental infrastructure of Bangladesh.”

“Besides government allowances are reaching the homes of the elderly, widows, the disabled, and the helpless. As a result, their children are returning from their early working lives. Free education and stipends have helped the new generation of helpless people return to school,” he added.

The benefits of independence are reaching at every door, the most of the marginalized people are now daring of dreaming for a better future, he wrote in the concluding remark.

His observations were also substantiated with a visual report incorporating interviews of the beneficiaries who thanked the prime minister for the series of measures transforming their lives.

Beneficiaries including people from transgender communities and ethnic minorities also spoke highly on the initiatives meant for including them in the society.

Dhaka keen to build comprehensive partnership with Washington: FS

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Sunday said Bangladesh has high expectations from the Biden Administration in terms of building a “comprehensive partnership” as the two countries want to do more to take the relations to the next level.

“This is what we’ve told our US colleagues today. Bangladesh will remain keen in this regard, with the view to work closely with the US in our journey together towards peace and prosperity,” he told reporters at a joint briefing at state guesthouse Padma after the 8th Partnership Dialogue between the two countries.

US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland, who led the US side, said they have already a “very strong” 50 years of partnership and the two countries can do even more together.

She said they can do more in the area of growing business and trade, in terms of technology infrastructure, resilience of two economies, in the area of security.

Nuland said they are really pleased to be back in town to “energize and deepen” their already very strong partnership and termed Sunday’s discussion just the “appetizer” on a “very big feast” that we are going to have this year with a number of engagements.

Masud said this year’s Partnership Dialogue is especially significant for two reasons – firstly, the two countries will be soon celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

And secondly, he said, the COVID-19 pandemic barred them from holding the regular dialogue mechanisms in the last two years.

The foreign secretary said Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen will be holding a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on April 4 in Washington.

Dhaka keen to build comprehensive partnership with Washington: FS

He said this Partnership Dialogue is indeed the first one with the Biden Administration, and also the first among a series of dialogues scheduled in coming months.

“Thus, Bangladesh is considering today’s discussion as the beginning of a rejuvenated robust engagement with our US friends,” he said.

The two countries are planning to have high level economic dialogue, security dialogue, separate defense dialogue apart from other engagements.

On Sunday, the two sides held “fruitful” discussion on the whole gamut of the bilateral relations between the two countries, encompassing political, economic and security domains.

Masud said Bangladesh deeply values its multifaceted relations with the United States, which is based on shared liberal values of upholding democracy and human dignity, commitment towards maintaining international peace and security and aspiration for socio-economic development of people.

The two countries also discussed the areas of “excellent mutual cooperation” like the Rohingya issue, COVID-19 vaccine support, US development assistance, capacity building in the security sector.

They also exchanged views on areas of yet untapped potentials like exchange of high-level visits, investment, trade facilitation, connectivity, stronger defence and security cooperation.

The FS said they exchanged views on Indo-Pacific Strategy, and also shared Bangladesh’s perspectives on national, regional and global security and geo-political scenario.

The Bangladesh side expressed its willingness to cooperate with each other in UN Peacekeeping operations, and expressed willingness to continue bilateral collaboration in security and defense domains.

“This is an area on which we would have further detailed discussion in the upcoming security and defense dialogues,” said the Foreign Secretary.

In the area of economic cooperation including trade and investment, he said, we look forward to having further discourse in the upcoming high-level economic partnership consultation in early June and possible next round of TICFA this year.

Responding to a question on the Ukraine issue, Nuland said this is a moment for all free nations and all free people to stand together with the people of Ukraine and say this war must end. “We had a rich conversation about that. We know what kind of society we are trying to build.”

FM not going to Pakistan; FS to represent Bangladesh in OIC CFM

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen will not be joining the forty-eighth session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to be held on March 22-23 in Islamabad.

Instead, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen will lead the Bangladesh delegation, said an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

The OIC said the CFM represents the second most prominent OIC activity following the extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers held last December on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

Earlier on Saturday, FM Momen indicated his non-participation at the OIC meeting. “We always attend OIC meetings. I said before I’ll go. But recently I got a little sick and the doctor suggested that I take some rest.”

On several occasions, the OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha expressed solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.

He reiterated the commitment of OIC Member States to help bring peace, security, stability and development to this country.

Furthermore, he called on members, Islamic financial institutions and partners to expedite humanitarian assistance for the needy.

Since August 2021, Afghanistan has continued to witness a difficult humanitarian situation with uncertainty about its future.

This prompted the OIC to take several steps towards containing the situation and playing its role in mobilizing support from the international community to the Afghan people, given the specificity of the Organization, which highlights its responsibility in addressing the issues of the Islamic world, according to a message from the OIC.

“We need to plan academic curriculum in line with the labour market. It is often seen that students cannot study as per their interests and preferences,” he said at a discussion organised on the ocassion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibir Rahman.

SA vs BAN Test Series 2022: Head to Head Records, Venue Stats, Fixtures

Bangladesh will play two Test matches against South Africa, the first of which will begin at the end of this month. Because this bilateral Test series is part of the ICC’s Test Championship, both teams will be looking to outperform one other. In the ongoing WTC points table, Bangladesh is presently placed second, while South Africa are in third place. Let’s take a look at the Test records between the two sides, venue statistics, and fixtures for the SA vs BAN Test Series 2022.

Noteworthy Test Records between South Africa vs Bangladesh

South Africa and Bangladesh have faced each other in twelve Test matches. Bangladesh have yet to win a Test match against South Africa, with the Proteas leading the head-to-head matches 10-0. Only two of Bangladesh’s matches against South Africa have resulted in a draw. Both matches took place at home in 2015 as part of a bilateral series. On the other hand, South Africa have defeated Bangladesh in six home games and won the remaining matches away from home.

South Africa vs Bangladesh Test Series 2022: Venue Statistics

The longer-version format bilateral series between South Africa and Bangladesh will be contested on two different stadiums. The venues are Kingsmead in Durban and St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth.

Test stats: Kingsmead in Durban

Matches Played: 44 | Result (win): 30 | Result (Draw): 14 | Highest Innings: 275 (Gary Kirsten) | Best Bowling (Innings): 8/69 (Hugh Tayfield) | Highest Team innings: 658/9d | Lowest Team Innings: 66

South Africa’s record at the St George’s Park: Played: 31 | Win: 13 | Lost: 13

Fixtures for the SA vs BAN Test Series 2022

South Africa and Bangladesh will play their first Test match at Kingsmead in Durban. The game will begin at 2:00 p.m. (Bangladesh Standard Time). The second match will be held at St. George’s Park in Port Elizabeth at 2:00 p.m. (Bangladesh Standard Time).

First Test Match: 31 March – 4 April | Venue: Kingsmead | Time: 2 p.m.

Second Test Match: 7 April – 11 April | Venue: St George’s Park | Time: 2 p.m.

Bottom Line

The South African Test team will most likely be favourites to win the two-match bilateral series against Bangladesh. However, nobody can rule out Bangladesh’s possibilities in the longer format, particularly after their inspiring performance in the ODI format. Moreover, some of the current South African Test team’s well-known names will be unavailable for the series. These players will compete in the IPL 2022, a twenty20 franchise competition.

The upcoming SA vs BAN Test series 2022 will be a great opportunity for the Bangladesh team to stun the Proteas national side in the longer-version format for the first time. Besides, winning a match will increase their ICC Test Championship points. The Mominul Haque-led team has the ability to upset an inexperienced Proteas Test team, but they must execute their tactics properly on the field.

Messi ruled out of PSG match at Monaco

Lionel Messi will miss Paris Saint-Germain’s French league match at Monaco after experiencing flu-like symptoms over the past couple of days, his club said.

Messi, who joined Paris Saint-Germain last summer, has been struggling throughout his first season in the French league. Before Sunday’s trip to Monaco, Messi has scored just seven goals in 26 games in all competitions. It’s a stark contrast compared to his figures from last season when he bagged 38 goals with Barcelona.

In addition to the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, PSG will also be missing Keylor Navas, Sergio Ramos, Angel di María, Juan Bernat, Layvin Kurzawa and Ander Herrera at the Stade Louis II.

PSG has a 15-point lead at the top of the standings as it chases a record-equaling 10th French title. Lagging 15 points behind PSG and chasing a runner-up finish, Marseille and Nice meet at the Stade Velodrome in Sunday’s showcase match. Nice will be missing suspended defender Dante.

Tigers now eye series victory against South Africa

With the series on the line, Bangladesh are looking forward to sealing the series against South Africa on Sunday in Johannesburg while the hosts will have to bounce back to stay alive in the race.

In the first match in Centurion, Bangladesh displayed an ideal team effort to overcome the challenge of beating the Proteas at their home backyard which the Tigers were never able to do in previous 19 attempts.

Now, the Tigers have a rare chance to beat South Africa in an ODI series away from home. Tamim Iqbal-led team is eager to grab the chance with two hands.

Bangladesh’s formidable batting laid the groundwork for the solid performance. Liton Das and Tamim managed a decent start before Shakib Al Hasan and Yasir Ali grabbed the limelight.

The late-order batters also did well with a sparkling batting show that helped Bangladesh post a total exceeding the 300-run mark.

While bowling, Bangladesh managed to have early breakthroughs that helped them to put pressure on the hosts straightaway. South Africa were never able to come out from that position.

Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam were the bowlers who put the initial pressure on the South African batters, and later on, Mehidy Hasan Miraz made it tough for the hosts to bounce back in the match. The right-arm spinner bagged three wickets.

At the end of the match, the Bangladesh captain said Mehidy asked the captain to give him the ball saying he would put more pressure on the hosts.

Ahead of the second match, Mehidy said the tremendous form in ODI cricket gave them the courage to dream big.

“You cannot achieve if you don’t dream big,” he said on Saturday. “We now want to win big things— be it the Asia Cup or World Cup. For now, we want to win more series abroad as we normally do at home.

Proteas bounce back strongly against Tigers to level series 1-1

South Africa came back strongly in the second match of the three-match ODI series in Johannesburg Sunday to beat Bangladesh by seven wickets.

With this win, the hosts levelled the series 1-1. Both the teams will take on each other in the series decider on March 23 in Centurion.

In the day’s match, Bangladesh posted 194 for nine after choosing to bat first.

In a must-win second ODI game, South Africa chased down the target in 37.2 overs, with Quinton de Kock (62) and Kyle Verreynne (58*) killing Bangladesh’s hopes.

For the Tigers, Mehidy Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan and Afif Hossain picked up one wicket each.

Earlier, the Tigers had almost lost the match in the first 12.4 overs as half of them were in the dugout with just 34 runs on the scorecard.

The disciplined South Africa bowling unit did not really allow the Bangladesh batters to settle. Tamim, Shakib and Yasir fell for 1, 0 and 2.

In the sixth wicket stand, Mahmudullah Riyad and Afif Hossain added 60 runs. Tabraiz Shamsi broke the partnership, with Mahmudullah perishing on 25.

On the seventh wicket, Afif and Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 86 runs.

Afif’s 72 gave the Tigers some hope, but a target of 195 was never really going to be enough to rattle the superb batting line-up of the Proteas.

For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada bagged five wickets, conceding 39 in 10 overs.

Bangladesh won the first match of the series by 38 runs, which was their first win against the hosts on their soil.
