Dhaka: The 19th World Autism Awareness Day was observed today at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) through a series of programmes highlighting the importance of dignity, rights, and equal opportunities for individuals with autism. The observance included a rally, seminar, and drawing competition, marking the day with the theme ‘Autism and Humanity – Every Life Matters.’
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was attended by notable figures including BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Prof Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Prof Dr Nahreen Akhter, Director of the Institute of Paediatric Neuro Disorder and Autism (IPNA) Prof Dr Syeda Tabassum Alam, and Chairman of the Department of Paediatric Neurology Prof Dr Kaniz Fatema.
Speakers at the programmes noted that globally, the prevalence of autism has increased from 1.7 percent to about 3 percent, describing the situation as concerning. In Bangladesh, a 2014 estimate indicated that 17 out of every 10,000 children are affected by autism. The speakers emphasized the importance of maternal care during pregnancy, early diagnosis, proper management, and support for children’s mental development.
Furthermore, the speakers stressed the need to enhance education and social rehabilitation for individuals with autism, raise parental awareness, reduce social isolation among children, and strengthen awareness campaigns through mass media. They highlighted the core message of the day, which was to ensure respect, rights, and equal opportunities for people with autism.
The speakers asserted that every individual is unique and valuable, and autism should be regarded not as a limitation but as a different ability that can contribute positively to society with the proper support and care. They also called for increased global efforts to raise awareness, eliminate discrimination, and ensure social inclusion for individuals with autism.
