Dhaka: Police have arrested 18 leaders and activists of the Awami League (AL) and its student wing, the banned Chhatra League, from different parts of the district in the last 24 hours. The law enforcers conducted separate drives from 12 noon on Tuesday to 12 noon on Wednesday across 12 upazilas of the district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, those arrested are accused in multiple cases filed under various acts, including the Crimes Disrupting Law and Order (Speedy Trial, Amendment) Act-2019, the Penal Code 1860, the Anti-Terrorism Act-2009, and the Explosive Substances Act-1908. The individuals apprehended include Amjad Hossain, 55, from Nagarpur, and others from different regions of Tangail such as Mirzapur, Delduar, and Ghatail, among others.
The police stated that the cases against these individuals involve allegations of organized violence, assault, causing serious injuries, attempted murder, intimidation, extortion, and offenses related to explosives. The arrests were reportedly made to address specific charges of creating chaos ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliament election.
Tangail Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar emphasized that the district police are continuing operations to control crime and ensure public safety to maintain overall law and order in Tangail.
