Rangpur: A court here today acquitted 17 Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists in a case filed on charges of creating chaos to oust the government in 2015 in Rangpur. Judge Krishna Kanto Roy of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 of Rangpur passed this order, acquitting all the accused leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir this afternoon. The accused were present in the court when the verdict was announced.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Advocate Zoynal Abedin, a lawyer for the defendants, informed reporters that Kotwali Thana police had conducted a raid on the Ashiq Hostel in the city on May 26, 2015, which led to the arrest of the 17 Jamaat-Shibir activists. The acquitted individuals included Moudud Hossain of Pirgachha upazila, Motaleb Hossain and Mikail Anwar of Mithapukur upazila, and Shariful Islam of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur.

Following an investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet against the 17 accused to the court. After considering the testimony of three w
itnesses and the arguments presented by the lawyers from both sides, the court decided to acquit the 17 individuals. Advocate Zoynal Abedin claimed that the leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shibir were deliberately implicated in the case.

He further alleged that the public had been deprived of freedom and justice due to the prolonged misrule of the fascist Awami League government and its interference in the judiciary. However, he expressed satisfaction that the innocent accused finally received justice as the country was liberated from the fascist regime following the Student-People Uprising in 2024.
