Sarail: A case was filed on Sunday against approximately 150 individuals, including leaders and activists of the BNP, over allegations of obstructing newly elected MP Rumeen Farhana from paying homage at a Shaheed Minar in Sarail upazila and assaulting her supporters. Ahad, a supporter of Rumeen Farhana, lodged the complaint with Sarail Police Station.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the former general secretary of Sarail upazila BNP, Anwar Hossain, has been identified as the primary accused in the case. Officer-in-Charge of Sarail Police Station, Manjur Kader Bhuiyan, stated that the case specifically names five individuals, while another 140 to 150 are listed as unidentified.
The case statement alleges that Rumeen Farhana faced obstruction from local BNP leaders and activists when she attempted to pay tribute at the central Shaheed Minar in Sarail upazila. The situation reportedly escalated as slogans were chanted against her, leading to a scuffle during which the wreath brought by Rumeen Farhana was torn apart. Subsequently, she departed the area with the support of her followers without paying her respects.
In response to the incident, Rumeen Farhana's supporters organized a protest by blocking the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at the Shahbazpur area of Sarail around 12:30 am, causing traffic disruptions for nearly an hour. Rumeen Farhana secured the Brahmanbaria 2 seat in the 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate after being denied a nomination by BNP, leading to her expulsion from the party for contesting against its endorsed candidate.
