Patuakhali: In a joint operation, 12 fishermen were detained yesterday afternoon in the Mahipur coastal area in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district with illegal artisanal trawling boats and behundi nets.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries conducted the operation on a tip-off. The authorities detained the 12 fishermen from the Kuakata estuary along the Bay of Bengal.
The operation resulted in the seizure of two artisanal boats and 10 behundi nets, collectively valued at around 50 lakh. The seized items were handed over to Mahipur Police Station for further legal action, as stated in a press release signed by Coast Guard media officer, Lieutenant Commander Siam Ul Haque.
