Dhaka: About 12.5 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of gas will be integrated into the national grid tomorrow from Well No. of Titas Gas Field, managed by Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL). According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this initiative is a part of broader efforts to boost the supply from local sources, aligning with the BNP government's commitments.
In addition to the immediate supply from Titas Gas Field, approximately 55 MMCFD of gas is projected to be added to the grid from four more wells at Titas and Bakhrabad gas fields over the next three to four months. These developments stem from ongoing drilling operations and field enhancements aimed at mitigating the nation's import dependency by leveraging domestic gas reserves.
BGFCL officials disclosed that drilling for the Titas-28 well has concluded, while operations for Titas-29, 30, and 31, along with Bakhrabad-11, are progressing. The completion of these projects is anticipated to contribute an additional 67.5 MMCFD of gas to the national supply within the coming months.
Engineer Md Ashraful Alam, BGFCL's General Manager (Operations), announced that State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit will inaugurate the Titas-28 well tomorrow. This well, following its inauguration, will be connected to the national grid, enhancing the domestic gas supply and reducing reliance on imports.
Project director Engineer AKM Jasim Uddin revealed that the Titas-28 well, drilled to a depth of approximately 13,000 feet, will begin production immediately post-inauguration. Initiated at a cost of Taka 800 crore, the project also includes wells Titas-29, 30, and Kamta-2, with plans to accelerate their development for prompt integration into the national grid.
Md Mahmudul Nawab, overseeing the Deep Exploration Gas Well Drilling Project, highlighted the ongoing drilling at Titas-31, which commenced on April 19. Currently at a depth of about 4,920 metres, the well aims for a target depth of 5,600 metres. Completion within two to three months could lead to a daily supply of 15 MMCFD of gas.
The Titas-29 well has completed primary drilling, with logging and other activities underway. It is expected to supply up to 15 MMCFD of gas once operational within the next one to one-and-a-half months. Similarly, Titas-30 is slated for completion within three to four months, potentially adding 10 to 15 MMCFD to the grid.
Upon completing Titas-31, BGFCL plans to initiate drilling at Bakhrabad gas field's Well No. 11. With a target depth of 4,500 metres, successful completion could result in a daily supply of 10 MMCFD from Bakhrabad-11. Combined, the Titas and Bakhrabad wells could contribute up to 67.5 MMCFD to the national grid.
BGFCL officials estimate the current reserve of the Titas gas field at approximately 1.5 trillion cubic feet (TCF). The exploratory Titas-31 well holds the potential to uncover additional reserves, with initial estimates suggesting the discovery of up to 2 TCF. Further testing will determine the precise volume of these reserves.
