Bagerhat: A Bagerhat court has ordered the imprisonment of 10 fishermen on charges of illegal fishing activities in the Sundarbans. This decision came after the fishermen were apprehended for violating fishing restrictions in the Sundarbans East Forest Division under the Sharankhola Range.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrests were made following a raid conducted by forest guards on Tuesday evening. The operation, led by Forest Ranger Milton Roy from the Dublar Char Forest Patrol Outpost, was initiated based on secret information. The forest guards seized five boats and a substantial amount of fishing nets during the raid.
The operation saw the arrest of six fishermen, along with three boats, from Chan Miyar Khal in the Shelar Char patrol area and four others with two boats from Kalamiyar Khal. The fishermen were reportedly preparing to engage in fishing activities within a sanctuary area, which is in violation of existing restrictions. Of the arrested individuals, eight are from Koyra in Khulna, while two hail from Sharankhola.
Divisional Forest Officer Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of the Sundarbans East Forest Division confirmed that a case has been filed against the detainees under the Forest Act. He noted that the fishermen were presented before a Bagerhat court on Wednesday morning, although their identities remain undisclosed.
