A member candidate in the Union Parishad (UP) elections was killed in an attack by his opposition in Harirampur union of Gobindaganj, Gaibandha on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Saharul, a defeated member candidate of Harirampur union.
According to relatives of the deceased, the winning member candidate of the union Firoz Kabir was leading a procession in the afternoon. Supporters of Firoz broke from the procession to attack Saharul in the Chowrasta area of Harirampur.
Seriously injured Saharul was rushed to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Gobindaganj Police Station OC Izar Uddin said no case has been registered in this regard yet. After inspecting the spot, he said that the victim was attacked but the cause of death could be ascertained after an autopsy.
