Bangladesh dropped five regulation catches in the three matches they played and lost so far in the T20 World Cup, making their progress to next stage harder and nearly impossible.

The sloppy fielding remains the biggest concern for Mahmudllah Riyad’s team, according to former Bangladesh captain and current selector Haibubul Bashar.

Losing three matches on the trot, Bangladesh are close to being eliminated from the T20 World Cup. They actually don’t have a real chance to qualify for the next phase of the event.

In their next two matches, the Tigers will take on South Africa and Australia. They must win these matches and wait for results of the other matches to see if they have a chance to book a place in the next phase.

“It’s normal that you cannot bat well in a match, or you cannot bowl well. But the fielding is the area where you have to do well in every match you play,” Bashar told the media recently.

“Doing well in the outfield is always a very important task for a cricket team,” Bashar added. “Sloppy fielding damages the good rhythm of a good team. We have to do well in this area.”

In the match against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh’s top-order batter Liton Das missed two regulation catches, and against West Indies, Mahedi Hasan also dropped two catches. At the end of the day, those missed catches cost the Tigers a lot.

Right after the World Cup, Bangladesh will take on Pakistan at home. Bashar said they will move on after playing the last two matches of the T20 World Cup.

“We are still playing the World Cup. We have a plan about what we need to do in the future. But we would like to start moving on after the World Cup. We will have a break for a few days before the Pakistan series, and we will sort out some plans during that break,” Bashar added.

The former captain blamed Bangladesh’s powerplay batting for their lean show in the World Cup. According to him Bangladesh needs to have some big hitters in order to get expected success in the shorter format of the game.

He also said everyone in the team is frustrated with their results in the World Cup so far. It hurts more especially when they have a big dream after winning three straight T20I series against Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand.
