The Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election has been viewed as a fair one by the international community, said Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam.

The Minister said this to the reporters after a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Vikram Kumar Doraiswami on Tuesday.

He said that Narayanganj city polls were witnessed by the entire nation, diplomats and the media. The diplomats had discussed among themselves that the election was free and fair. Though votes have been cast via Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) Awami League candidate won a huge number of votes.

“Though there were some technical difficulties during the process there is no chance of rigging with the EVM. That’s why this method is more acceptable. Error occurs all over the world. It cannot be the basis of any complaint.”

Regarding the allegations of the defeated candidates about the EVM fraud, he said that the candidates keep saying this when they are defeated.

Tajul Islam said, despite this system being more secure the government can’t launch EVM across the country. As it is a new technology and there are challenges with it. It takes time for adaptation. People need to be introduced and adapted with this system before it can be launched.

There have been some errors with this in the US and Indian elections too, he added.
