Former Bangladesh cricketer Khaled Mahmud Shujon has been added to the coaching staff of the national team, in the aftermath of the T20 World Cup debacle.
Jalal Yunus, who heads up the BCB’s media department, confirmed the development.
This is not the first time that Shujon will be part of the national team staff. Since retiring as a player, he has worked with the national team at various times as interim coach, assistant coach and team director.
Shujon’s work with the Under-19 national team that won the last ICC U-19 World Cup has been widely lauded.
He will join the team for the upcoming home series against Pakistan starting from November 19 in Dhaka. He will assume the role of team director.
“He will join as the team director in the Pakistan series,” Jalal Yunus told the media. “He will be involved in team selection and also work with the team captain and coaches.”
The decision came after Bangladesh’s catastrophic T20 World Cup campaign in Oman and the UAE, where the Tigers went winless in the competition proper, after scraping through a preliminary round where they finished second to Scotland, in a group that also had Oman and Papua New Guinea.
They ended the tournament as the only Test playing nation to be dismissed under 100 runs, and for good measure, it happened to them twice (84 v S Africa and 73 v Australia).
The bowling lacked any threat, and the fielders dropped catches at a rate of two per game.
It was decidedly one of the worst World Cup campaigns for Bangladesh, despite its dreadful record at T20 World Cups anyway.
Most of the members of the Bangladesh team returned home on Friday.
The Tigers will start gearing up for the Pakistan series on November 12. The series consists of three T20Is starting November 19, followed by a 2-Test series.
All of these matches will be played in Dhaka except the first Test which will take place in Chattogram.
