Independence Cup Football: Police book first-ever semifinal berth at Sheikh Russel KC’s expense

Bangladesh Police FC made their first ever semifinal berth in the season’s curtain raiser soccer meet, the Independence Cup ‘21, eliminating last time runners-up Sheikh Russel KC by 1-0 goal at the Bir Shrestha Shahid Shipahi Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur here on Sunday.

Afghan forward Amiruddin Sharifi scored the match-winner for Police FC in the very 4th minute of the match by a good header in the day’s nerve shattering 3rd quarterfinal.

Sheikh Russel KC managed a golden opportunity to level the margin as they got a penalty in the 52nd minute but the spot kick of their Brazilian forward Machado De Souza was brilliantly saved by Police custodian Mohammad Nehal.

Midfielder Hemonto Vincent Biswas of Sheikh Russel KC and captain Moneam Khan Raju of Police FC got marching order in the last part of the day’s match after receiving red cards.

Police team will play the 2nd semifinal on Tuesday (Dec 14) at 8 pm, either with BPL champions Bashundhara Kings or former champions Sheikh Jamal DC, now playing each other Sunday night.

In the first semifinal on Tuesday (Dec 14), Dhaka Abahani Limited will face Saif SC at pm.5:15 pm.

The final match will be held on Dec 18.
