BNP Standing Committee members have said the recent incident in Barishal triggered by an attack on the residence of an UNO by ruling party men exposed internal conflicts within the government.
They made the observation at a virtual metering held on Saturday evening, said a party press release on Sunday.
It said the meeting discussed the demand of Bangladesh Administrative Service Association for the arrest of the Barishal City Mayor on charge of attacking and vandalising the residence of the UNO and blocking the roads by spreading garbage. “The meeting feels that this incident has depicted the internal conflicts of the current unelected government. It has also proved that the political and administrative conflicts of the government are gradually growing.”
The BNP policymakers condemned the padlocking of the office of Dhaka University Prof Asif Nazrul and threats against him by Bangladesh Chhatra League for expressing his views on Facebook.
“Such an incident is in fact a threat against the state,” they viewed.
The meeting decided to create public opinion against the interference in the freedom of expression of people.
It also strongly demanded the government stop such ‘repressive’ activities.
The BNP standing committee members denounced the police action against the leaders and activists of BNP’s Dhaka south and north units centring paying homage to Zia’s grave on August 17.
They demanded the withdrawal of three cases filed against BNP leaders and activists over the incident and the release of those arrested in the cases.
The BNP standing committee meeting voiced concern over the uncertainty of having Covid vaccines for the country’s majority of people.
They also accused the ministers of making confusing statements over vaccine procurement and inoculation. “People are waiting for months in uncertainty even after registration for the vaccination. On the other hand, the news of the sale of vaccines at private clinics has caused extreme confusion and frustration among people.”
The BNP policymakers also said the country’s Covid situation has become complicated due to serious mismanagement, vaccine uncertainty and corruption.
