Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said that eight 15-storey hospitals for the treatment of cancer, kidney and liver are being constructed in each of the eight divisions of the country, which will reduce people’s out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare.

The Minister announced this while speaking as chief guest at an event organized by the Health Economics Unit of the Health Services Department at a city hotel on Sunday. The discussion event was focused on out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare.

He said such expenses have been increasing for non-communicable diseases like cancer, heart and kidney diseases. Many families become almost destitute due to these diseases that account for the highest number of deaths in the country every year.

“Realizing the importance of this matter, the hospitals are being constructed in all the divisions,” Maleque said.

The construction work of the hospitals is at the final stage. Thousands of patients will be treated for non-communicable diseases at these hospitals free of cost and this will greatly reduce the out-of-pocket expenditure of the people, by also not compelling them to visit the capital or other divisions for getting the health services they need.
