10 hurt in N’ganj gas cylinder blast

At least 10 people, including a child, suffered injuries as a gas cylinder of a vehicle exploded at Aliganj in Fotulla of Narayanganj on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred around 9 am when a gas cylinder of a vehicle exploded following a cigarette fire as some workers were repairing the vehicle behind a tin-shed house of Abdul Baten in Beparipara area of Fatullah’s Aliganj, said Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, quoting locals.

The type of the vehicle was not immediately known. Seven occupants of the house were burnt in the blast.

Among the injured, six were admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

They are Hafsa, 6, Alam, 40, Judge Mia, 50, Sathi Aktar, 20, Asma, 40, and Hasina Momtaz, 38. The others are doing well after receiving first aid, said the official.

Meanwhile, Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Alam and Judge Mia are in critical condition as they sustained more than 90 per cent burns on their bodies while Tahmina Akhter 80 per cent and Hasina Mumtaz 66 per cent.

However, the child Hafsa sustained 16 per cent burn injuries, her mother Sathi Aktar sustained six per cent and Hasina 66 per cent, SM Ayub Hossain, resident physician at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
