Woman drowns minor girl over trifling matter in Chandpur

A 5-year-old girl was drowned over a trifling matter by a woman at Bolshid village in Chandpur’s Shahrasti upazila on Saturday.


The victim was identified as Jannatul Mawa, daughter of late Akter Hossain, while the accused is Fatema Akter, 35, wife of Firoz Hossain of the village.


Fatema and Kajal Rekha, mother of the victim, both earn bread and butter for their families working as domestic help.


Locals said the incident took place around 11am when Fatema had a brawl with the minor girl over a trifling matter.


At one stage, Fatema drowned the girl in a nearby water body after tying her hands with rope and concealed the body beneath water hyacinth.


As the girl went missing, her mother along with other family members began searching her everywhere.


Later, the 4-year-old boy of the accused woman disclosed it to the villagers what his mother did to the minor girl.


Md Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Shahrasti Police Station, said they arrested Fatema immediately as the victim’s mother filed a case with the police in this regard.


The body was sent to hospital for autopsy, he added.
