BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said their party will give a reply to the killing of Munshiganj Jubo Dal activist Shahidul Islam Shaon by ousting the government.

“The blood of Shaon has encouraged us to take a fresh oath that we’ll give a reply to his sacrifice of life by ensuring the fall of the current fascist authoritarian regime at any cost,” he said.

In a brief address prior to Shaon’s namaz-e-janaza in front of BNP’s Nayaplatan central office, Fakhrul said the Jubo Dal activist sacrificed his life for the restoration of democracy and people’s voting and other rights.

“So, we’re taking a vow that we the people of Bangladesh will establish a pro-people government by removing the current despotic regime through united efforts. We’ll be able to show proper respect for Shaon if we can do that,” he said

The BNP leader prayed for the salvation of the departed soul of Shaon and conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family members.

He said Judo Dal will arrange a protest rally in front of their Nayapaltan central office on Saturday protesting the killing of Shaon.

BNP’s tributes to Sahon

Earlier, Sahon’s body, carried on a freezer van, was taken to Nayapaltan from the mortuary of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 6pm.

His first janaza was held there with the participation of thousands of leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies.

After the janaza, Fakhrul and party standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy placed wreaths on the coffin of Shaon paying last tribute to him on behalf of BNP.

They also draped his coffin with a party flag as a mark of respect.

Later, the body was taken to his hometown Munhsiganj for burial.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies took out a torch procession at Nayapaltan protesting the killing of the Jubo Dal activist in Munhsiganj.

Earlier on Wednesday, at least 50 people, including Shaon, were injured in a clash between police and BNP leaders and activists in Munshiganj’s Muktarpur over holding a rally of the party protesting the price hike of fuel, daily essentials and the killing of three opposition leaders in Bhola and Narayanganj in police firing and attacks on different programmes of the party.

Shaon, who sustained serious bullet wounds in his head, was put on life support in the DMCH where he died on Thursday night.
