DHAKA, Water transport workers called off their strike after a meeting with the labour ministry officials today.
We have called off the indefinite period strike considering sufferings of passengers ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, said Bangladesh Water Transport Workers' Federation BWTWF president Shah Alam.
BWTWF leaders decided to call off the strike after a meeting with director general of the Department of Labour AKM Mizanur Rahman at his office, said a labour ministry official.
Passenger launches resumed operations on 43 rivers routes this evening, he said.
BWTWF enforced the strike for an indefinite period from Wednesday midnight across the country to press home their 11-point demand.
The demands include appointment letters, allowances, pay hike, giving workers identity cards, introducing provident funds and an end to extortion.
