Wahed Mansion owner’s sons sent to jail over Chawkbazar fire

DHAKA, A Dhaka court today sent two sons of the

owner of Wahed Mansion, from where the devastating Chawkbazar fire originated

killing 71 people on the night of February 20, to jail as they surrendered

before it.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Qaisarul Islam sent Md Hasan and his

brother Md Sohel alias Shahid to jail after scraping their bail plea.

The siblings surrendered through their lawyer and pleaded for fresh bail

as the tenure of their three weeks bail granted by the High Court ended. The

state however, opposed their plea. After hearing both the sides, the court

rejected the bail plea and sent them to jail.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Jahangir Hossain and

Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan on March 11 granted the siblings bail for three

weeks, asking them to cooperate with investigation officer of the case filed

over the deadly blaze.

The High Court at that time had asked them to surrender before lower

court once their bail period is over
