Eight electronic voting machines (EVMs) that were alleged to have been stolen from a polling centre in the Panpatti union in Patuakhali’s Galachipa upazila on Thursday were recovered later from the garden, police said on Friday.
Supporters of the losing candidate looted the EVMs from Kazirkanda Government Primary School Polling Centre after the results were declared.
Shawkat Anwar Islam, OC of Galachipa Police Station, said police opened fired on the attackers to bring the situation under control.
Later, police recovered five EVMs on Thursday night and the remaining three on Friday morning from the garden of the polling centre.
Meanwhile, the acting executive magistrate of Panpatti Union Mohammad Suhrid Salehin said additional cops had to be deployed in the area on Thursday evening after the incident. However, the situation is now under control, he added.
Efforts are underway to arrest the miscreants who were involved in the crime, the OC added.
