Two suspected criminals killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’

MEHERPUR, Two suspected criminals were killed and four policemen injured in a 'gunfight' between the miscreants and police on Gangni-Baradi road in Gangni upazila of the district early today.

Police said the deceased were identified as Alamgir Hossain, 26, son of Areshad Ali, a resident of Chandpur village in Raipur union under Gangni upazila of the district and Shepon Ali, 27, son of Mather Ali, a resident of Dulalnagar village of the upazila.

Being tipped off, a team of the police conducted a drive in the area when a gang of criminals was going to collect tolls from SB Brick Kiln around 3am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them compelling the police to retaliate. At one stage, Shepon and Alamgir suffered bullet wounds. They died on the way to Gangni Upazila Health Complex.

The injured policemen were admitted to the health complex.

Police also recovered two bombs, one LG shooter gun, bullets and weapons from the spot.
