Two RU students among three held on rape charges

Police on Thursday arrested three people, including two students of Rajshahi University (RU), in connection with two rape cases filed with Motihar Police Station.

Two RU students -- Zahid Hasan Shovon of Public Administration department and Tarun Kunda of Sociology department were arrested from Shah Makhdum Hall around 12:30am over the rape of a girl, said officer-in-charge of the police station.

According to the case statement, Zahid used to provide tuition to the girl and developed a love relationship with her.

On February 15, Zahid took the victim to his relative’s house where he violated her with a promise of marriage.

When the victim’s father came to know about the matter, he filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Meanwhile, in another incident police arrested another man -- Ratan Ali, 30, as he allegedly raped a 13-year-old madrasa student on March 5 in Talaimari area of the city.

Sub-inspector Sahabul Islam of Motihar Police Station said the accused was arrested after the victim filed a case over the rape on Wednesday.
